SR-63 by Bent Custom & Peformance

It's been in the works for a little while now, but we finally got it on the ground this past weekend. A 1963 chevy fleetside pick up. It started out as a rear suspension fix. We all know how these projects end up though. We ended up scratch building a hole new chassis for it. We designed a custom rear shock set-up so I could mount them parallel to the frame and a set of highly modified rear trailing arms. The front suspension is a combo of Bent and a big help from Roger at Iron works. We still need to finish up the chassis but you get the idea on how some of the cross members will look. The pics w/ the bottle jacks show where it will be at ride hight. It will also have an ls-1 for power and a few other goodies. Hope you guys like it ?

Very nice!!! I love trucks. They are not the same old 69 camaro (and I have a 69 Camaro).

214Chevy 02-01-2010 09:04 PM

Very nice framework. Love the trailing arms.:hail:

srh3trinity 02-01-2010 09:30 PM

Very well done. I like the thought and work that went into the rear setup. I love things that are mechanical and are functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. I am really wanting one of these for a "parts chaser" and running down to home depot truck.

GregWeld 02-01-2010 09:54 PM

Wow -- that about says it all!

I can see that Bent and IW is a lethal combo!!

 :woot:

T_Raven 02-01-2010 10:27 PM

I love it! It's always nice seeing a truck getting built like this.

awr68 02-01-2010 11:04 PM

Nice work guys!!

pacificustoms 02-02-2010 09:22 AM

Awesome! I love the two links on the rear cantilever like that! Great looking truck!

Cris@JCG 02-02-2010 09:53 AM

Looking good Mark! I remember when I saw this chassis being put together.. The end results are looking awesome

HOLOHAN'S HOT ROD SHOP 02-02-2010 09:54 AM

Nice work, I like the thought process with the rear suspension, good job.........

radrambler 02-02-2010 10:55 AM

I'll echo G.W.----WOW ABOUT SAYS IT ALL!! Great work guys!!

silver63c10 02-02-2010 08:45 PM

Wow, that is definitely a different take on the truck arm setup. It's a shame you have to put a body over that frame. Killer project!

I hate builds like this. Why? Because...I just do!! Naw for real, I hate builds like this because I can't get enough of them. LOL!! I can't get enough of the pics and the ingenius fabrication. Sooo sweet I tell you. I have a 68 and wanted this body style. Something ironic is I looked for this body style for 2 years(a good one anyway) and right after I found my 68 I found a perfect 66. Too late by then because I had already spent my money and would be too much of a hassle to sell the 68 just to get the 66. Anyway...........more pics please. You know how much we all love pics!! :hail: :hail:

syborg tt 02-03-2010 07:24 AM

Great looking project Mark. I can't wait to follow this build.

Eric that's an under statement coming from you. Just to let you guys know Eric's tallents were a big help in the rear suspension design. My sick brain and his mad computer skills !!!! THANKS E-dog

Dood !!! You would poo your pants at how perfect this body is. I know these trucks like the back of my hand and when we blasted it I could'nt beleive what I found. These trucks are natorious for rust. This thing is perfect.

Here's the rendering I forgot to post.

Thanks to Carter Hickman

GHOSTDANCER 02-03-2010 09:46 AM

The rendering looks great. I really like the color

GregWeld 02-03-2010 09:53 AM

Perfect - Understated elegance!

Pound it! :hail:

cdhc10 02-03-2010 10:06 AM

are you going with a wide rear tire like your previous truck that you sold?

HWY Nova 02-03-2010 03:42 PM

Here is one of the final revisions of the suspension set-up (with air-bag full) before Mr. Bent had the components fabbed:

Final rendering (with air-bag empty):
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n...tassembly2.jpg

..... and after fab (at ride height):
http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n...a/100_2149.jpg

Fun stuff!!!!!

I started with the 3D CAD model supplied by Rodger of Ironworks Speed & Kustom. Rodger did a great model, which made it easy for me.

Very Nice!!! What upper ball joint did you use?

Your kinda handy with that design stuff:thumbsup:

GregWeld 02-03-2010 07:44 PM

Love it -- just one question -- does all the "swiveling" going on her end up being the same "one to one" action/stress that would be if the suspension was "normal"??

It was fun doing this one. Mark gave me a "problem statement" about laying the shock along the frame, forward of the rearend. The SolidWorks part was the fun part. I even have a short motion study video clip. I'll see if I can post it here.

Actually it is not one-to-one. Mark and I discussed the desired shock extension/compression dimensions and I calculated the arm lengths accordingly. Bottomline, you don't want the shock to work "more" that it would in its normal mounting operation.

Looks pretty cool, lots of parts mounted in single shear though. Are there bearings in the bellcranks?

Cris@JCG 02-03-2010 08:46 PM

Very cool the way you guys brought this rear suspension together

Nope The rims and tires that are on it. Customer already had them.

It's Rogers front suspension design, Good question cause I need that info also.

We used bronzed oil lite bushings. For the size bolts we used there's not a small enough outside diameter bearing for the design.

silver63c10 02-03-2010 11:18 PM

I noticed there's no vent window on your rendering, do you have a method of doing that lined up?

I've stared at the doors on mine pondering that and never could figure out a way to have a functional one piece glass in there. It looks great on the render, cleans things up nicely.

hammered65 02-04-2010 07:28 AM

Mark, the truck is looking awesome! Can't wait to see more on this one.

Silver63, a member over at 67-72chevytrucks has a good write up on how he did one-piece windows in a '63 truck. I believe it is in post #89.

Just a standard screw in ball joint. Spicer Number 500-1004
