1970 Firebird "Mobile Closing Unit"
As a new member to this community I am excited to introduce a project I am working on in connection with the guys at All Speed Performance in Muskegon, Michigan. My first car was a 1970 Firebird that I was forced to sell shortly after receiving my license due to excessive speeding. I was so fond of that car that I decided to purchase another one as a “restoration project”. Well, like most projects of this nature, it has taken a life of its own and this hobby-turned-obsession is in the build stage and will be on its way to SEMA in November.
Kris Horton spent countless hours on the rendering bringing this vision to life. Some of body modifications include a custom chin spoiler, rocker skirts, enlarged functioning hood snorkels, functioning fender vents, recessed roof and trunk lid, integrated spoiler, rear valance with diffuser and widened front and rear fenders. For performance, we are started with a custom Pontiac 400 block, punched it to 475 cu in. and are adding hi-flow Kauffman aluminum heads, twin turbos and custom pistons. In true Pontiac style, we had a fuel injected six pack intake made and are in the process of milling a custom billet hat for the throttle bodies. I will include a full build sheet for everyone to see. The car is named “Mobile Closing Unit” as it will contain a mobile office in the trunk. I plan to use this car as a promotional tool to conduct mobile closings on real estate transactions. Interestingly, the car will be covered by a patent that is pending on the technology and process. We currently use the Ford Transit Connect vehicles for this purpose so this will be a nice addition to the fleet. The guys at All Speed Performance are working tirelessly on this build and are shooting for a June 30 completion date. I welcome any thoughts and comments and will keep posting pictures on a weekly basis. Thanks! https://lateral-g.net/forums/imag...2671515941.jpg https://lateral-g.net/forums/imag...2671515942.jpg https://lateral-g.net/forums/imag...2671515943.jpg |
Looks like a great project.
Maybe you could call it the Foreclosure Express, LOL |
man I cannot wait til this car comes together. I'm going to have to keep an eye on how those rear flares turn out.
|
Bad ass. Love it, looking forward to seeing it come together.
|
Nice is ASP building cars now i though they were just doing motors. Am i misinformed?
|
coolest looking bird I have seen
I hope it looks exacly like the rendering when completed.
Good luck and I will be looking forward to updates |
Looking good!! Nice 2nd Gen Bird!!

WOW!!!! Very nice rendering Kris. GOOD JOB!
Car is going to look killer. I love it. Did you say 475 with TWIN TURBO's?!? :wow: :willy: Very nice. Keep us posted on this bad boy please! |
I'm glad you guys dig the renderings. Tom and the guys at All Speed have been a joy to work with and I can't wait to see what they do with the car! So far all of their work has come out just like (if not better) than the renderings and I'm sure this car will be no exception.

very cool project. I live right by muskegon. Hopefully I will see it somewhere when it's done.

Thanks. You should stop by ASP and see the progress. Before sending to All Speed, I did several things on my own including the teardown, smoothing the firewall, frame connectors, welding all underbody seams, mini-tubs, front tubular suspension, cut out for the center exhaust, fiberglass nose and front spoiler etc. I even had it primed by a local body shop. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out, but am very excited to give the reins over to All Speed to take it to a whole new level. What started as a mild restoration has turned into a mega-build - I'm sure no one out there can relate!
The engine parts just came in so I will be posting build pics of that later this week. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird195.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird196.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird197.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird198.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird201.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird202.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird001.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird002.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird003.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird004.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird005.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird006.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird008.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird009.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...irebird010.jpg |
Very cool project. Nice to see another second gen brought back to life.
For an east coast car that looks like a very solid foundation to start with. Looking forward to seeing this one happen! |
It's going to be killer with the boys at ASP on the job. I can't imagine wanting to mix work and play being in the business but it's definitely unique.
|
 would that be considered a buis exp
if it turns out like that, It would turn me from wanting a first gen |
well my pants just got a whole lot tighter... and Im just gonna stay sitting down for now... sick build man
|
Very nice. That is going to be a killer looking car.
Keep us posted please. |
Thanks, I will be posting the recessed roof and trunk spoiler detail this week -they are just being finished. Here are a few more pics as it moved out of my garage to a body shop in the area who smoothed the body and gave it the first coat of primer.

Looking good.
|
Chris did an awesome job on the renderings, this is going to one nice ride.
|
Looks good.
I'm keeping an eye out for this build. THANKS!! |
Now comes the fun part. The pictures going forward will highlight the work of the guys at All Speed as they create this beast per the renderings by Horton.
We are shooting for 1,500+ hp and 1,300+ tq at the rear wheels and by the looks of the Butler Performance IA II performance 400 block bored to 475 cu. in., Kauffman heads, Eagle crank that has been turned, Ross custom forged pistons with 8.5:1 compression ratio, they will hit the mark. This will run on pump gas. F&B Throttle Bodies made a custom fuel injected 6-Pack intake and we are milling a custom hat for use with the twin turbos that will highlight the throttle bodies. Much more on the engine to come, but I thought I would share a few pics now. Also, ASP just finished the recessed roof. I like the way this turned out. Thanks again for all the good words on the build - we are have fun now! Here are some pics of the Butler Performance Block http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ght/Block3.jpg Take a look at the size of the Butler mains as compared to a standard Chevy 4-Bolt http://http://i943.photobucket.com/a...ght/Block5.jpg A few more shots of the bottom end. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ght/Block4.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ght/Block6.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ght/Block7.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ght/Block8.jpg Here's the Eagle crank http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ight/Crank.jpg Custom Ross aluminum pistons with a very thick top plate to handle the boost. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ht/Piston1.jpg Eagle H-beam forged connecting rods http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...stonandRod.jpg The making of the six-pack injection system http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...sixpack008.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...sixpack012.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...sixpack013.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...sixpack001.jpg Back to the body, here's a few shots of the recessed roof. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...bird/Roof1.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...bird/Roof2.jpg |
VERY COOL!! Nice work on the roof too. I can't wait to see it with the rest of the body mods.
|
WOW! Very cool. Some great builds coming out of this shop!! That engine should handle very well!! lollll.....:wow: :willy:
Keep us posted. |
Looking good really like the roof. Also what kind of numbers do you think the six barrell will get you??
|
Awesome project I love it. Awesome rendering Kris. The roof and spoiler are my two favorite parts. Those will be some fun power numbers.
|
The Roof is just awesome. Something the factory should have done on the 2nd gens

The six pack intake includes three 600 cfm 48mm billet throttle bodies and .58ID fuel rails. Not exactly sure what size injectors will be used. I wanted a very unique but authentic look that would support the twin turbos. While not the least expensive, that's why we started with a Butler Pontiac 400 block and had numerous custom components made rather than pulling an engine out of a newer GTO. As far as numbers, we are expecting to break 1,500 hp at the rear when we get it on the rack.
All Speed just finished molding the enlarged and extended hood scoops and they look amazing. I should have pictures to share by the end of the week. Finalizing the rear spoiler and starting on the front chin spoiler are next. |
The renderings are awesome!!! Love that roof - I'll be watching...

Back on the Bird!
I finally have a few minutes to catch my breath and update everyone on the status of the project.
In the past few months, we've brought on several additional sponsors: FAST, Forgiato Wheels, DSE, Wilwood, Corbeau Seats, Visner Engine Development, and Optima Batteries. Everyone is excited about this build that will be featured in Forgiato's SEMA booth in November. It has been several months of non-stop changes/edits/triumphs and set backs on this project - I'm sure many of you can relate. A few weeks ago we decided to have Kaufman build us a larger set of heads moving from 290 cfm to 340 cfm. This ruled out our use of the custom six pack intake we had built. I contacted Dave Visner of Visner Engine Development to build a custom one-off billet intake. Dave has been building intakes for NASCAR engines for years and is a true master. The intake will include dual FAST 92mm throttle bodies with TPS and dual fuel rails on each side with two injectors per cylinder. One 65lb and one 95lb injector will be installed for each cylinder to give us good idle and all the support we need at high boost. He is also building custom two-piece valve covers to match the milling of the intake. I upgraded the brake package from a Wilwood 12” to their large 14” six piston set up all the way around. Wilwood coated the calipers in a custom gunmetal gray color to match the rim of the wheels and the stripe of the car. We also recently installed DSE’s Quadralink suspension system in the rear of the vehicle. Due to the hardware, we had to cut the axles, install the brackets and re-attach the axle tubes. We opted for DSE’s double adjustable shocks to give us the ability to fine tune the ride height and flexibility for track days. As for the body, the plastic injected front spoiler and rear wing were scrapped for real metal. All Speed was concerned about the structural integrity of trying to blend the plastic and metal as it would result in separation at high speeds. Everything on the car is now metal except for the fiberglass nose and hood. The chin spoiler is complete. Now we just need to cut in the lower valance openings and we are installing 3” running lights below the headlights. This car originally had square turn signals below the headlights, but we are installing an integrated headlight and turn signal thereby leaving the space below for some tasteful running lights. We also closed out the side marker lights for the front and back. The front fenders have been widened by about 1” and are cropped by front wheel flares that carry into the side skirting and rear wheel flares. They will finish the flares behind the rear wheels this week which will tie into the rear diffuser that will run from the rear bumper (that will be tucked) to the axle. The rear diffuser will include the cut-out for the custom exhaust manifold that exits the rear. The fender vents are being built and will be finished this week as well. They will be fully functional to create more down draft on the front. The rear spoiler includes the cut-out in the middle to carry the indentation theme from the roof to the trunk lid to the rear of the vehicle. The hood scoops have been enlarged for height, width and were brought forward 3” and back about 5”. This will compact the look of the front nose. The scoops will be functional and tied into the turbo system. The Forgiato custom forged wheels will feature a satin black face and face with a gunmetal detail and lip. 20” x 12.5” rear and 19” x 10” front. Let me know your thoughts/ideas. Here is a picture of the original six pack intake, as you can see, the head ports extend beyond the top of the intake. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...ckTooSmall.jpg This is a CAD rendering of the new billet intake by Visner http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...CAD1062310.jpg DSE's Quadralink Suspension with dual adjustable coil overs should to the trick. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uspension1.jpg Here are a few shots of the chin spoiler after the first pass with the grinder. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010004.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010002.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010001.jpg Fenders were widened and side skirt added. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010005.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010006.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010007.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010008.jpg The rear spoilder has been enlarged with the center cut detail and rounded edge. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010012.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010011.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010010.jpg http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...uly2010009.jpg Forgiato custom wheel design with gunmetal gray lip and detail to match the calipers and stripe of the car. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a...iatoWheels.jpg |

Very nice! This is going to be one kick ass car!!
Keep us posted. |
Beautiful project! And extra points for saving the car from a yard. I am also amazed that someone would actually throw that car out.
|
Cool take on one of my favorite cars. Looks pretty angry...me likey.
|
Lookin' good!
I was thinking about adding a '60 style vent to my fenders and BOOM there they are (with some additional flair of course!). Very nice. Keep the pics coming. Chris (can't wait until mine is this far along) :) |
We recently upgraded the Kaufman heads to provide for larger flow (340 CFM with CNC porting) which resulted in our need to have a custom intake and throttle body assembly made. Visner Engine's is a local shop with experience in the NASCAR world and puts out an incredible product. They were milling the top of the intake out of this chunk of billet. Here is the CAD design of the intake. We are going to build a set of custom throttle bodies with the linkage concealed under the intake so the entire top will be smooth. The CAD shows one fuel rail per side, but we are running two per side as we will have two injectors per cylinder.
