Bye bye GT3 RSs, chased around a 1972 Porsche RSR
pardon the sailor talk. bad habit on the track!
I am so tired but had to post this... At big willow today chasing a track prepped 1972 RSR that was fully track prepped and an instructors. I think he was toying with me, but it was BRILLIANT to watch and experience. I can't wait to get back the pro pix. I can't wait to see their in car footage. Put down some times I'm happy with, didn't put one wheel off, and didn't feel ANY pain during my sessions. I found a cure, Adrenaline. In 2 different sessions instructors came out to play with me with their own cars, a 1972 Porsche RSR, and later a Z06 vette from arizona. Was a fun sight to see to say the least, and I learned a lot just following the instructors lines. I can't wait to get the professional photos. Guy also took promotional footage of my last session with 2 cameras one pointed at me and the other on my back window. Can't wait to see that. Met so many good people today and had such a great time. so the car you were following is known as BB2 or Black Beauty 2 and the owner is Jack Olsen. He is an AWESOME dude and really a great guy to everyone. His car is much faster than :40s :) and I HIGHLY recommend asking him for a ride in his car. You (and I with my V8 914) have the HP to climb on him or leave him in the straights, but corners are what matters.
I have only trusted 2 people... ever... to drive on a track while I rode along and he is one of those two people. He takes T3 differently than I do but everywhere else I have followed him with my car when I was out there and vice-versa and can say he is a solid guy (this was before I went tube chassis, etc and moving to CO 3 yrs ago). He has gone back to few aero aids but it is still a fast car. Work on T1 - you are leaving a LOT on the table hugging the inside of that turn on exit because that is a fast turn and scraping that much mph is loosing significant time. I say any chance you get to go out with that group, go and if Jack is there follow him every chance you get and you will definitely learn from him. Tho' I like an earlier line thru 3, that can be just how your car works so you need to figure that for yourself. I am a momentum driver even tho' I have a ton of right foot "momentum" on tap, I prefer to ease thru v. brute force T3. The other guy I trusted to ride with had a later model 911 and I just had to see what it was like to go 'round in the :28s :unibrow: Man I miss that track!!!!!!! |

So far I've run with speedventures and this new (to me) group Open Track Racing. They book track time and you pay a portion of the rental, usually around $200, sometimes as low as $120. Bigger tracks like Laguna Seca can cost up to $300... Look at the schedules of the tracks you want to drive on and find organizations running and contact them to see if they'll let you run. The two I have mentioned are both great groups, but Open track racing defitely is a lot more laid back and fun. Kailo is an AWESOME guy and so is his wife. Every single person I met was nice as all can be. Speedventures is a great group as well, but these are both CA based track run groups. Open track racing lets instructors run for free as long as they volunteer to instruct which is awesome. Speedventures charges. |

I was having brake pedal issues so you'll notice I was pumping the breaks before every turn to make sure I had a firm pedal. Need to bleed the wilwoods and get a power bleeder I think. T1 definitely is a much faster turn than I was taking it, but the brake issues were keeping me from putting absolute confidence in them. If I can't get a solid reliable pedal out of the manual wilwoods I'm going to add hydroboost. Definitely kept me from running as hard as I could, but it was still faster than previous outings. Power steering is a must. I didn't venture offtrack once this time, something I commend the power steering for. Its a track truly suited to high horsepower cars and drivers with balls. Not for the weak minded thats for sure. Entering turn 8/9 I was in 5th about 130mph. Without the rear spoiler it was too hairball so I dropped the speed and kept it lower throughout the day until following Jack around. What a fun day and good run group to play with. Kailo is hilarious and every person I met is good people. Had a blast. I need to get some more instruction, but first work on this brake issue and the rear aero. |

Dane - you are 100% correct about Kailo and the group as a whole, probably one of the coolest groups of people I ever ran with (other than when me and 19 or so workmates/friends would rent the track :unibrow: )
So I highly recommend to anyone thinking of lapping to look them up. This is NOT wheel 2 wheel (W2W) by any means as you can see in the vids - it is gentleman's driving with point by passes, etc - because everyone wants to go home with all four fenders in place so it really is a great way to actually learn how to drive a car. Jack I think is getting out to the track on a more regular basis, he had his first kid awhile back and that kept him grounded at home quite a bit but he is making it out more from what I can tell on the Porsche board he frequents. As for T7-9, I don't know if Jack would ever remember but it was maybe the first time I ever went out with them now that I recall, but I was in front of him and we went up and over the hump and I went inside a bit too far and hit the whooptie-do of a bump there and the whole car felt like it shifted a foot to the left almost instantly and he flat dropped out of the gas expecting me to lose it. 'Course that didn't happen ;) :D and I managed to keep the throttle planted and drive thru it, but man that was a pucker moment. Same day I found out the gear ratios for my trans I found online were incorrect and I thought I was just cruising the front stretch and way off my mph wanting to keep him up with me. I looked up near the end going into T1 and I couldn't even see him in my mirror. I thought I was rolling along holding 115-120mph when I was actually shifting into 4th at 140mph! I was hitting 155-160 when I was actually on it :thumbsup: Dammit I love that track! MPH monster. |

That RSR is a really cool car. I would love to take a few laps in that too! I am hoping there will be a NW get together this spring here. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but seems like its got the right people for the answer. Do you need your SCCA license to go to track days like this? Have been thinking of finishing up racing school to get a license, but its $$$$. Do you need it for these type of events? |

First time I figured it was just an idiot, second time I start to fear patterns with newbs and why I now highly recommend a newbie actually taking classes with SCCA and paying the money - it is safer because they actually one on one assess your skills and can help you fix bad tendencies before they become bad habits. :thumbsup: |

Here's the odd thing. The Car Craft photographer who was out that day is also the guy who just wrote up my garage for the magazine's 'This Guy's Garage' section in their April issue. I ended up with the Porsche for a few different reasons, but I still think the first-generation Camaro is maybe the best-looking American car ever. I still watch that video Dane shot. It's fun to see my own car on the track, but I swear he has to brake sometimes to keep from rear ending me on the straights. :willy: Let me start my list of excuses. I was down pretty significantly on horsepower that day -- basically running on five cylinders after the rings gave up on cylinder #1. The engine had been in the car for ten years and was on its last legs. Oh, and I'm not allowed to pass any cars in that group if they don't give me a hand signal -- and I'm not allowed to pass in the corners at all. I swapped a new (used) engine into the Porsche in August. The new one should make about 20 more horsepower. But we're still talking pretty modest numbers -- officially, Porsche says they got 272 at the crank from the 1995 air-cooled flat six I now have in my 1972 tub. The license plate on the car is '1972 RSR,' but that's a kind of inside joke. 1972 was the last year that Porsche didn't make an RSR model. The first time it existed was in 1973 -- and those cars sell for over a million bucks now. Mine is a plain old 1972 base-model 911. But I've put in an engine from a 1995 911, a magnesium transaxle from a 1977, and brakes from the 1986 Turbo model. The car is pretty light -- 2700 pounds with me in it. So it doesn't take a huge amount of power to get it around the track quickly. It's not a track car, per se -- it's a daily driver that's got a cage and fire system in it (mostly because I crashed the previous version at Laguna Seca and figured my 'walked away without a scratch card' had been used up). For actual racing, I'd get rid of all the interior amenities and put in a fuel cell. I drive this car to the track and run it on the same tires I use for driving around town. For Willow Springs, I bolt on a wing and front spoiler. They fit inside the car for the ride home, but make the car a lot less scary going through turns 8 and 9. I made all the aero stuff in my garage -- the rear wing is just 3M structural adhesive and aluminum flashing that's made for roof repairs. I tested it with wool tufts and ride-height sensors from a 1995 Lincoln Continental's air ride system. There's not enough traffic to make for very entertaining viewing, but watching it will give you a (repeated) snapshot of the driving line for Willow. My best lap time with the old engine (in its prime) was a 1:29.11. I still haven't gotten back there, even with the 20 extra horses. I blame the arrival of my first kid on that. My self-preservation instinct has slowed me down. But this video shows a bunch of 1:30s and a couple of 1:29s, so I'm getting closer to my pre-Daddy speeds. Dane, you should come back out. Open Track Racing is back at Willow in March. I'd be happy to take you out in my car or ride along in yours. I can tell you what I know about the oldest and fastest* road course in North America. *Oldest purpose-built course that's been continuously operated, and fastest in terms of average lap speed. |
