100+ MPH - thump - tink, tink...GONE

So...I'm driving my 69 Camaro home from work yesterday and had just reached the increased speed limit sign and of course...had to air it out a bit. Pedal to the floor and feeling the roar when something goes... Thump, thump...tink, tink........ The top windshield stainless went airborne at a hundred'ish mph. Never saw it in the rear view - have no idea where it landed. Might see it on my home today - but I doubt it is reusable. Anyway - quick call to NPD and another set on the way. |
We could never keep that window trim on the nova either. But our was at a 1000 foot at about 175mph at the drag strip. If we road a wheelie it would come off sooner. Finally had to ditch the trim.

You could go Big Red style. Some retaining plates. It should hold at 125mph though.

Lost mine on the ride home from buying my car. It kept popping loose and I kept pulling over and fixing it. I tried pulling the trim piece off but couldn't get it to come loose and didn't have any proper trim pulling tools. I believe I have an extra trim piece, but I don't want to put anything on until I know how to properly fasten them so it won't happen again. I was just happy that was the only problem I had driving it 3.5 hrs home.

This actually brings up a good point. I was thinking about this also when that 208 MPH Cuda lost it's windshield trim on that video clip. Original trim pieces ain't cheap and repairing and re-installing it can be a pain, or even repairing the deep scratches it left on your car as it flew off.
Besides the hold-down clamps or strips of metal or flush-mount glass, are they any other options for keeping the original stainless trim on at high MPH? The clamps/straps take away from the 'street car' look a bit so a more stealthy approach would be preferred. Maybe some extra clips? Adhesive? |

On my Fairmont Super Gas car, I am planning on welding studs to the underside of the trim. I have the luxury of it being a racecar, but if it is done cleanly enough, you could hide it.

I remember as a kid, riding in my dads 66 Turbo Corvair. He decided to give it a 100 mph run and the hood came off the car. It was an instantaneous blur. It came off the car and broke the hinge bolts as it flipped up. I remember looking back and see it land in the ditch and fold like a paper plate. :lol:

Just put the new one on with a healthy dab of trim adhesive on the clips and have it taped down right now drying.
I put a couple of small dabs under the top trim after and solvent wash on the glass for an extra bit of bite. Hoping to keep it from tipping up in the front under wind pressure and blowing off again. |
Real easy "street car" conversion -- go flush mount - no trim -- looks better INMHO anyway...

Just replace the window clips with a better tensioned ones, the spring steel gets weak after being pulled to remove the trim, (even after one removal) and good camaro shop will have them, and you want this style where the pin mounting slot has adjustment teeth
