My new 69 project
I recently drove from NC to Nebraska and picked up this 69 (X66) project for my wife. It was her 40th b-day present. Now comes the fun. The car is an original 396 4speed car originally bought in NEB and has been there for past 40 years (August born car).
The plans are: semi-stock, semi pro-touring. Car will be lowered with Hotchkis front and DSE rear leafs, DSE tubular uppers, Baer brakes and 18" wheels. Interior will be mostly stock, except MAYBE aftermarket dash. Wife has to decide. Engine: 396 Trans: T400 (wife wants auto). I will continue to try and convince her to go manual, but not working so far. Rear: Original 12 bolt, 3.07 gears (tru-trac) Going back with original Glacier blue paint and blue interior Leaving it as a spoiler delete SS396 http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...69project1.jpg http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...69project5.jpg http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...ject/Cart1.jpg http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...ject/cart4.jpg |
very cool....I a little jealous of that shop- nice place!
|
Nice score. I'm kind of jealous of the shape of that shell!!
My vote would be to leave the spoilers on. |
Solid project, I agree with keeping the spoiler.
|
Thanks for the comments fella's. I love my shop. The floor is filthy, but since the floor has epoxy coating on it, it cleans up really easy. I still need to run my air lines though. I've been saying that for the past year. :(
The car shell and floor, etc is very solid. Lower rear quarters have some issues, but I dont think I'll have to put full quarters on. I plan to get it media blasted this month, then I'll know. ;) The car did not come with a spoiler. It has original trunk lid and never had a spoiler on it. I just hate to drill holes in a lid that has gone 41 years as a spoiler delete optioned SS. |
Very nice find  I like your idea on the build, sounds like it's going to be a sweet ride!
|
That's awesome Jay!! Good deal. She must be sikked to be able to drive it when complete. I WOULD!
Nice shop too.  |
Nice looking project. I hope it is as solid under the paint as it appears.
I like that you are leaving the spoiler off. While they look good with them, they also look good without. |

I'm with you Chris. My plan is not to have a spoiler. I get the subframe back from the powdercoater wednesday.
|
I got my subframe and lca's back today. I think the powdercoating turned out well. I hope to get the car shell to the media blaster within the next couple of weeks max.

Looks good Jay. Keep us posted.
|
Another vote for no spoiler. Body shell looks pretty good, media blasting will reveal all!
|
nice shell.. staying with stock wheels?

That's awesome Jay---I think it's cool that your wife is into the car thing--especially 69 Camaro's. I hope she doesn't want a 454 LSX next however--LOL---you'll have to cut her off--keep the pics coming.

The sub frame looks good.
|
Thanks Doug. Many kudos go out to you for GIVING me the lower control arms. Thank you very much! There are alot good people on this forum and Doug is one of them.
Hopefully I can pay it foward when someone else needs something. Thanks again! |
Hey Jay, I'm in the market for a powder coated front sub frame----
Glad to help bro---still got the uppers here man--if you need them---got a set of almost new KYB shocks for the rear that I can't use anymore since I converted to the G-Bar---yours if you want them. Doug |
Looks like a nice project.
What part of Nebraska did you get it from? I've been going to out to Nebraska a lot for work and I'm just curious. What wheels are on your orange 69? Do you have any more pictures of it? That is one sweet setup you have there for a shop. I'm very jealous! |
I think it'll look real sharp with the correct blacked out tail panel without the rear spoiler. It'll be very unique. I'm pretty sure all SS396's came with the black panel aside from black cars.
Looks like a very nice car to start with! Congrats! :lateral: |
Jay....is that the rendering I see in the background of one of the pix? :D

I'll try and find some pics of my orange 69. |

BTW, everyone who see's the rendering loves it. The manager at FedEx Kinkos liked it so much he printed 4 copies and gave them to me no charge. How cool is that? |
Very cool.
|
Dropped the car off to the media blaster today. I will get the car back tomorrow and then it will get some expoxy primer.

Very cool!

Whoa cool build and someone actually within 30 mins of my house! Mind me asking who did your blasting? I got mine done took a long time!!!! Now where replacing all sheet metal on my Chevelle. Brandon
|
Got the car blasted today. Here is a close up pic of the firewall. Hard to make out from this pic, but the lettering looks like: blu and D99. Anyone know what D99 code is?
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...t/DSC00553.jpg |
According to this website on decoding the build sheet. The D99 designation is Two Tone Paint Molding. I have never seen one before and I have no idea what it looks like or what it is. Hope this helps. If you do find a picture or anymore info post it up I love to learn more about Camaro!

Car turned out well. Not alot of surprises. Rear quarters will need to be replaced (was hoping I could save them) along with outer wheelhouse's (inners are fine). There are a few pin holes in trunk and rear passenger pan, but nothing that cant be welded up.
Also sail panel will need some repair where glass lays but I dont think it requires replacement. Front pass floorpan will need to be replaced between toe pan and just in front of seat riser. http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...t/DSC00582.jpg http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...t/DSC00581.jpg http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...DSC00580-1.jpg Sail pan lip http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...t/DSC00545.jpg Pass pan http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/p...t/DSC00574.jpg |
Not to bad Jay! Man I wish mine was half that good...
|
That looks really good, a very nice starter.

I have been told their fenders fit/gap nice to doors also. |
I haven't had a chance to update lately, but I have worked on it some. The pin holes in trunk and a few in rear floor have been welded & smoothed. I cut out part of the front passenger floorpan and butt welded the new peice in. I thought it turned out very nice. I just have to grind the weld down now.

Nice looking beginnings!
 |
Jay how are the rocker panels ? Everything is rusted to heck on mine but my rocker panels are in excellent shape.. Just wondering how yours were..
|
Mario. My rockers are in good shape. Only thing to do is put on rear quarters, outer wheelhouses and trunk drop pans.
I got my AMD rear quarters in today and they are nice quality. Much nicer than what I remember from Goodmark (although I hear they are thicker metal now). |
I picked up a BUNCH of sheet metal from DNR Camaro last week . I was'nt going to buy the quarters from them ,but they showed me the ones they had and I could'nt believe how nice they were so I took them . I don't even know who's brand they are but man they look good:cheers:
|
My AMD quarters arrived a week ago so I am at the point now to get someone to replace the rear quarters, as I am not real keen on tackling this job. I know you have to start somewhere, but not on my wifes car. When mom is happy, everyone is happy!
I had spoke with Dan Holohan, owner of Holohan's HotRod Shop (formerly with Rad Rides by Troy and DSE) in Mooresville NC a couple of times late last year. So needing some fab work, my wife and I decided to go check out his shop and meet him and put a face with a voice. It was great to meet Dan and a special thanks to him for taking time out of his day to talk cars, shop and answer all of my questions about our project and projects he has worked on in the past. Many thanks again for the Sick Fish build book! I enjoyed spending most of a day talking cars. I must say my wife and I really enjoyed watching his dog Jake do tricks as well. Dan is a super nice guy. I plan to take the wifes car to Holohan's HotRod's in August. I saw some of his header and exhaust work on a 57 chevy and it was truely a work of art. Dan is blessed with a talent, I wish I had just a bit of. It's very hard starting a business, but doing so in this economy can be even more difficult, so if you need any fab work, call him up as you will not be disappointed with the quality of craftmenship. Here is a cool video of Jack saying his prayers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6rIchHO6-8 |
