68 Camaro Project

10 Attachment(s)
This is my Standard 68 Camaro, I bought it about a month ago in North Carolina. Its solid all the way around minus some surface rust but nothing serious. Currently the subframe is being off getting powdercoated. I have a 11'' disc brake conversion waiting in the garage and I will be ordering global west coilovers and control arms in a few days. Ill put up more pics when I get the subframe back. You can see in the pics that i have an older house with a garage that barely allows the door to shut with the car rolled in. It makes working on the car interesting but so far I have made it work.

It looks like you have a nice start for a project there. Keep us posted.

johnnymac46 05-12-2010 06:54 PM

I just found out that you arent allowed to leave a camaro shell on jackstands in your driveway in virginia beach if you are getting the subframe powder coated. Appartently I have 7 days to move it, only problem is im on a training trip for another 10 days. The ticket discribed my car as Junk/trash/ scrap metal.

A few more pics of my car, and i figured out how to post pics now

I took all of the glass out, and got the firewall stripped down yesterday. Thanks a lot to Frank from Prodigy Customs, he saved me a lot of time and headache with a quick tip on the E-brake cable. I hope to get it off to Media in the next week or so. from the looks of things im going to need to replace the whole floor pan, and do some work around the rear window

Don't you love to get parts back all new and ready to go like the sub frame. It looks great.

I believe that the part your are looking at is the charcoal canister used for emissions back in the day. Dont quote me on this though

The Latest News

Most of the work is on the garage, I got a bench set up in the front.

I picked up a Miller 211, and a engine hoist which I have used about 10 times and only used it on the engine 1 time. Im still debating where to put an air compresser so i havent made that purchase yet.

I got the craigslist special on a engine for 200 bucks. I had a buddy pick it up for me as I was overseas at the time. when i got home i rechecked the casting numbers to find that my 4 bolt main 350 was actually a 2 bolt 305....so that was depressing and the guy moved out of town so my loss.

I put in my order for my front suspension,(Thanks to Frank at Prodigy) so that should be waiting for me when i get back from my next trip.

A Member is helping me out and giving me a deal on a set of wheels that should also be here when i get back.

Here are some pics of my no so much progress, please excuse the mess

So this weekend i go the welder set up which took about 5 minutes of playing around once everything was put together. the miller is unbelieveably easy to use, and the helmet works awesome. This was my first time welding with a auto darkening helmet. i wish i would have had one when i did my truck when i was 16.

I built a cart to get it to and from media which is all it is intended to do so its nothing special. i finally saw the floor of my garage again. I didnt take any pics of the cart.

I am already off training again so i wont be working on it until at least thanksgiving. but i should have a pile of parts waiting for me when i get home.:D :woot:

Ron in SoCal 10-15-2010 05:44 PM

John - wait till you see the AME front end. It's a work of art! Here's a couple of teaser pics for you:

johnnymac46 12-11-2010 09:03 PM

I havent been on in a while to give an update about the car so.....

Subframe is back under it with the DSE Body mounts

i dropped in my 305 just because I had nothing better to do. Im currently debating going with a crate LS or a drop out LS motor but thats a long way away.

My girlfriend has been harrassing me about the pile of boxes in the entry way at home and txt me pictures of all of them. So when i get back from my current training trip next weekend ill be able to fully assemble my front suspension and get the front back on the ground.

The AME Tri-4bar should be done soon, I need to give Prodigy a call and check the status. Hopefully i can get the car back on the ground before January

Ill get some more pics up soon

johnnymac46 01-29-2011 02:59 PM

Its been a while since I have updated..

since my last post i have assembled the front suspension, minus the steering linkage which a buddy of mine is sandblasting some the parts.

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/6634aee9.jpg

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/3ab65fa3.jpg

I started on the mini tubs, i have one mocked up it still needs some trimming and fine tuning. I still have to cut the floor for the right tub, I began to remove the frame rails for the AME rear which I should have this week.

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/92f9aec4.jpg

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/445acdb1.jpg

Im going to wait to weld the tubs in until i get the suspension in. I am still debating if i can save the quarters or if i just want to replace them someone did a pretty terrible job of patching them. the outer wheelwells will definately need to be replaced.

Is there a way to roll the 1/4 lip without buying the 300 dollar tool im going to use one time and never touch again? ive been told that I will regret cutting them.

http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/543a46be.jpg

sorry for the bad pics I took them on my Iphone

waynieZ 01-29-2011 05:36 PM

I like the wheels they'll look great. I don't know how they work but Eastwood has a set of plyers to do the lip. I don't know anyone who used them.

johnnymac46 04-01-2011 06:56 PM

The suspension arrived yesterday....however I'm on a training trip a friend of mine picked it up and sent me some teaser pictures

I'll post some better pictures when I get home

I'll be home in two weeks, the car is prepped and ready for the clip I'll try to take a lot of pics of it going in. I can't wait to get it back on the ground.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to find a LS/T56 dropout?

I've been looking at the LSX 376 and 454 I'm not sure which direction to go yet.

I'm open to suggestions

They are very different motors. I just bought the lsx454 and it's expensive. But when it's all said and done I'm hoping it all worth it. There is a dealership I talked to in my search that has the Lsx 376 for 4500 shipped if you do wanna go that option. If you want the 454 let me know I know where to get it around 9400..good luck with whatever you choose.

I've been following you build pretty closely it's coming along nicely.

I'm a complete newb when it comes to LS engines I'm seriously considering a dropout package but I really don't know Which LS to go with.

Due to my short 23 years of knowledge gathering time I've had on this earth I have a limited amount knowledge of engines except for the standard sbc 350.

I've done a lot of reading on lat-g and protouring but I'm still learning any information on an engine I should or should t go with would be helpful

Thanks

Thank you. Im only 25 and dont know to much either to be honest. I can tell you this. If you want to go with an lsx 454 youll have somewhere around 500-600 wheel depending on how you set it up, you can make more than 600 but youll be getting into upgrading to a turbo/charger/nos + internals. If you are looking into this motor be prepared to put out around 13-18k depending on your set up..used parts/new, gm parts/aftermarket..ect. There is so many options. I thought very hard about going with a full gto or vette drop out. Pick a part sells them on here for very reasonable prices. You can get a full ls7 w/o tranny for around 10-13k...thats with almost everything you need accesories, ecu, wiring, sensors, brackets, pedal, ect. Or you can go with a complete mast lsx for 13-17k power ranges adjust as you spend more. Just food for thought. The main reason I went with the motor I did is because I like the gm 2 year warrenty and that its all gm. Its going to cost me more in the long run but its the motor that ive dreamt about, Id rather do it once the way I want then do it twice fixing it to my liking due to money. Read my thread there is some great info and knowledge on all of this. Good luck with what ever you choose. Ill be watching.

johnnymac46 04-16-2011 06:39 PM

Im finally home again, I just ordered full length floor boards, and a DSE firewall fill plate.

Tomorrow is the big day, I get to see my AME rearend for the first time tomorrow. I'll post some pics tomorrow of the rearend and hopefully get it installed before my shoulder surgery in 2 weeks.

I still havent decided on a motor, but I will have plenty of time to figure that out while my shoulder is in a sling.
