10" front wheels 1st gen Chassisworks subframe
So I know the 10" wheel up front has been done. I'm about to dive into minitubs in the rear and would like to slide my wheels right up to the front. Wheels are 17x10 w/ 5.75" backspace. Anybody know what backspace is optimal for the 10" wheel up front on a CA Chassisworks subframe? Would I have to homemade minitub the front? I don't want to mess with the outer lip at all.
Current wheel up front is 17x8 with I think 4.25"BS. So I would be adding 1/2" towards the lip which might be tight and the rest to the inside. Advise, pics? Thanks, Mike |

I would contact Jon Henson @ www.driverzinc and get his take,he's the expert here. Oh and I'm guessing your front 17x8's aren't a 4.25" b/s,probably more like 4.5-4.75". |
Looking up a little info, I think you're right, 4.75" bs on the front sounds more like it.... that means I'll be putting the fronts a whole inch closer to the outer fenders.
I have found a couple cars that have done the 10" wheel so far through searching, looks like 5.75" bs on both, so it's looking doable:thumbsup: |
If you have a 4.75" BS now, then you would be adding an inch to the front side of the wheel, and an inch to the back, if you go 5.75" on a 10" wheel. Using your existing wheel, your 8", as a mock up wheel, do you have room to go outboard and inboard an inch?

wow- sounds cool- pics?

Just moved shops from house garage to detached garage, need to get it back up on the jackstands this weekend to take a good look. I already have the 10" wheels w/285's mounted already so I'm gonna just take them off the back and see if I can jam them in there. I found something I forgot I had while moving shop, the shock simulator that came with the sub-frame. Straight bar w/ 1 hole at one end and 3 at the other for ride hieght, full compression, full extension.
Do I need full clearance lock to lock at full compression? I'll mock it and take some pics, see how much cutting I need to do. |
The Cheassisworks clips is stock track width. Your going to need 6.75" BS on that 10" front wheel

Just mocked up my 285/40/17 on 10" wheel w/ 5.75" BS and took some pics. With my shock simulator in ride height position it does not fit :(
It clears fender fwd of the wheel and the frame just fine but it hits the fender on the aft side of the wheel... just barely. But even if it cleared the fender, it would hit the wheelwell the further it turns. I got it to turn a little more than half way, it hit at ~60% from straight to lock. Honestly the wheel tire looks awsome in there, almost perfect fit. Should I just mod the aft of the fender well little or do I need to just stick w/ the 245's? Mike |
Yup, needs to come in a inch. You will bend the fender in a bad bump wth the tire out that far.
|
If I increase bs 1", I'll hit the frame/inner well before lock w/ the front of the tire. Would I have to limit the steering?
|
You will limit your steering running a 10" wheel on the front with that subframe. A 9" with a 265 is a much better fit. but most of us will give up a tennie bit of lock to lock steering for them big ole tyres!

I'm not sure if my frame is a first gen, bought in spring of 2006 I believe.
I just drove the car yesterday with new 18 x 10 5.5 bs 275/40 tires and no problems, the big test will be pushing it at the track. Street driving so far no problems. |

Compared to 6.75"bs on a 10", it would take a 1/2" off both the inside and outside correct? |

I have taken no action other than fit it up. I need to dive into my minitubs. When it comes time to replace the rear wheels tires, I'll decide if I change all 4 or just the rears. All depends on the cash flow situation in a few months...

Maybe Mikamaro would be so kind and take this measurement? |

Base on this measuremeant, to make the 18X9 with a 275 the same distance to the fender lip as the factory ralley with a 235, the BS needs to be 5.75". I am considering going 6.0" to give me a quarter inch more clearance because I am going to be pretty low. Does this sound right? http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/96f1b05a.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/9cf49dd7.jpg http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/5639e555.jpg |
Got to remember the difference in diameter of the tire. Mine fit fine w/ the the wheels straight. w/ the wheel turned, the larger diameter of the 285/40 tire hits the back of the wheel well where the 245/40 easily clears. Moving the wheel in towards the hat/frame moves the tire away from the back of the wheel well (when the front of the wheel is turned out). My wheels have 5.75" bs. If you look back at the pics to see where it hit, I was at just about 1 full turn of the steering wheel. 6.75" feels like it would look super tucked and dorky but maybe not. Maybe your '69 has more room at the aft fender and this won't be an issue for you as it is for me.
