A little cleaner under the hood

I've been meaning to do this for quite a while now, but I finally moved the coils.

Looks much better, but now I'm not so in love with the factory fuel rail. lol

Better than before... It almost looks like my car had its braces taken off.

Look good under there.

Rybar 05-20-2010 05:36 PM

Looks killer Scott, where do the coils end up mounting?

Al Moreno 05-20-2010 05:39 PM

Huge difference! It's amazing what that little extra details will do.

What dd you use to move them?

lil427z 05-20-2010 06:07 PM

Looks great Scott!

Car looks great Scott! I was wondering when you made the swap, did you have any panel fitment adjustments to make from the old subframe to the new? I see you did not take the front sheetmetal apart, but was wondering how that part of the swap went. Thanks!

The coil brackets are from JCG. I did Cris's website, so there was some horse trading involved.

I mounted them on the backside of the footwell area of the floor. There's at least 2" of clearance - they fit perfect. You can see the right side coils in this pic. the drivers side has way more room, but because of the steering column, you can't see them at all.

No problems with panel fitment and alignment. I did a test fit of the bare frame before I assembled it just to make sure. The swap went great, I had no problems. I didn't really know what to expect since all I had was an engine hoist, 6 jackstands, and 2 floor jacks. lol

What was pretty cool was we checked for squareness of the frame when I had it aligned on a pretty new Hunter alignment rack. It was perfect. I was surprised, to be honest, that it was dead nuts on. I had simply used the alignment dowel rod holes in the frame and body and cross measured in a few places.

Another interesting thing was that I had the car aligned 2 years ago when I finished it, and we got the thrust angle set at .01 degrees. After 2 years and 7,300 miles, it still measured .01 degrees. Pretty amazing that the quadralink never moved.

Detroit Speed makes some awsome suspenion products! Their sub-frames bolt on with no problems.. Doing a quadra link in the next couple of weeks on a 2nd gen Camaro.. The welding on the housing are

 I don't remember, but I probably wiped it up right away. :D

LOL! It's like peeling an onion, once you get one layer peeled you see a better layer beneath it. That's how all of the projects snowball out of control!
I can't count how many of my projects have gone from say, updating the brakes, changing the radiator ( insert whatever part/system) into, " While were at it " and the next thing you know you're doing a frame off/full build LOL! I think it's a sickness we all share.

looking great scott where did you mount the coils?most people don't have any idea how difficult it is to hide all the wiring and make it clean.the difference is in the details.ps i realy like your camera too!

tones2SS 05-21-2010 09:21 AM

Looks 100% better Scott. That's a clean looking engine bay.

ccracin 05-21-2010 10:48 AM

Looks amazing Scott. I have a question as well. How do you like having the engine un-painted? It looks great and we have been going back and forth on this issue. Look vs. upkeep etc. I really like the look of yours, is it hard to keep clean? Thanks.

Matt@BOS 05-21-2010 11:11 AM

Wow, big difference! was it at all difficult to run the wires under the headers? I'd kind of like to do that.

Also, probably missed it, but did you ever give us driving impressions of your new DSE sub?

Matt

Just look to the right of the spill there is a towel. Scott was probably getting ready to wipe it up, but then thought "hey if I take this picture right now people will think my floor actually gets dirty." Then while he was taking the picture he was twitching, horribly, with the thought of oil sitting on his clean floor.

It is amazing the difference in such a simple change. Great work all around as usual.

Spiffav8 05-21-2010 09:44 PM

Super clean!

What coils? I don't see no stinkin' coils!

Looks really nice Scott! :woot:

Vegas69 05-22-2010 09:43 AM

Nice! It's amazing how what once was a masterpiece in your mind can be improved so much. My engine swap turned into 40-50 hours of extra work. How do you like the drivability?

XcYZ 05-24-2010 06:48 AM

Back from vacation, now I can get caught back up. lol

Thanks Eric. The coils are mounted on the backside of the footwell area of the floors, above the collectors.

Thanks Chad. I've never cleaned the motor, I don't think it's an issue keeping it clean I guess. Personally, I wouldn't paint it, I like the aluminum.

 Maybe. But that's the beauty of the floor, everything simply wipes off.

That's a huge improvement, nice work!

XcYZ 05-27-2010 09:17 PM

Ok, I think I'm done now. :willy:

I'll get some better pics tomorrow during the day. I had to use the flash tonight, but that doesn't make for very good pics.

Hi Scott, way cool  It takes the car to a whole new level. As asked above, how does the DSE clip drive compared to the Wayne due set up??

cheers....Nige

XcYZ 05-28-2010 06:44 AM

Thanks Nigel.

As for the DSE subframe swap follow-up, I posted some feedback here. I couldn't be happier with it. It's a new car. If I had to sum it up in one word, it would be precision.

Payton King 05-28-2010 08:06 AM

The rails look much

better. Money well spent
