Project "Red Rocket" Olds - S475 Turbo'd LY6/4L60e
Hey Guys,
Just the other day I sold my Pro-Touring '78 Trans Am and will be delivering it to its new owner on Memorial Day. I learned a tremendous amount on that car and she sure was great for the limited time I drove her. LS1/4L60e Detroit Speed arms, Pro-Touring F-body Suspension and a boatload of other goodies. And while it saddens me to get rid of her...I am getting married and have some serious house work that needs to be done. However as one door closes, a new one opens. Well, the door opened for this girl: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...eDetail014.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4844285_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6547591_n.jpg A 1969 Olds Cutlass S with 44,000 miles on the clock. Why's it look so beat you ask? Well, the previous owner bogarted all the good sheetmetal to put on his 442 only to sell the damn thing! Anyway, I snatched this guy up for $1K and the interior is practically mint! My plans you ask??? Well, I talked with Mark at SC&C and she will be LOADED with the best of his catalog: - Stage II Plus System - SPC Lower Control Arms - SPC Springs - Currie Currectrac Rear Lowers - Adjustable Uppers - Chassisworks VariShocks - Hellwig Pro-Touring Adjust Rear Bar - Hellwig 1-1/4 Hollow-wall Front Bar - Lee 800 Series Box - HydroBoost - Front Baer Track System -13in Rotors - Baer Iron Sport Rears For Wheels........BOOYAH!!!!!!!!!! http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...W31/RatedX.jpg 18" Rushforth Rated-X!!!!!!!!!!!!! 18X8 fronts 18x10 rears. I love these things and think they will look killer on a Victory Red Painted W-31 Cloned Cutlass with two black stripes down the hood. Car's coming in the garage this weekedn when the TA leaves...   Oh and for a power plant? This will do nicely... http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...eDetail007.jpg 403 Olds from my drag car...ran 11.50s in that but I swapped the cam to make it a little more streetable. For now it will be backed by a TH350 but will eventually get a 200R4 transmission or 4LXX-esque trans. Oh and to top it off... http://www.massfloefi.com/images/included_parts-big.jpg A nice little kit from MassFloEFI... I am sooooo stoked for this project it is ridiculous! I am working on the guts first then paint. Gentlemen...here she is...a Victory Red Olds Rocket...hence the name... Project Red Rocket!!!! I know I know...I'm just fine with the jokes though...that's why I picked it!!! Thanks! :lateral: Dave Some pics of the TA before she goes: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...g%20TA/TA3.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...g%20TA/TA5.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...A/TAEngine.jpg |
Good luck with the new project Dave and keep us updated

Nice upgrade in my opinion.
I love the cutty and think this is going to be very nice. I like your wheel choice as well. I would love to see 18 in the front and 20's in the back though. The back fender of these cars expose the entire wheel so an 18 in the back might look a little smaller then say an 18 on a chevelle. just my .02 cents. Question- What headers are you going to go with on this thing? The only reason I ask is because I had a 67 and headers where hard to find. Only Mondello sold them at that time. |
Very cool man. I'm digging it. I remember your post in the "for sale" section. Keep us posted please!
BOOOYAAAHH!!! |

I can always grab a set of hookers or hedmans if American Racing Headers are in short supply. Thanks again! Dave |
Small Update with BIG NEWS for me!
I have been talking a lot with Mark from SC&C and we have a real solid concept for the suspension and got to talking about wheels today as well. Originally I was going to go with the Rated X Rushforths you see above. After punting some ideas around with Mark I made a quick call to Jason Rushforth and we just may have a neat little "Concept" for us Olds guys.... Stay tuned...rendering to appear within the next few weeks! :woot: Dave |
A Cutlass, awesome!
Glad to see you are going with Olds power, bonus points for the FI too. Cool:cool: |
Very cool Dave. Should be awesome!
I'm looking forward to all the "secrets"!:_paranoid  |
Nice project Dave good luck with it.

A little update...
Finally had a chance to get the car out of the garage and working on her. Tore into the front end and pulled off the fenders, hood and core support.
Got a few pics of the original straight six…kinda cool in its own way. Can’t wait to get this guy up and running and ready to rock and roll. I plan to pull the engine and tranny tomorrow and hopefully begin separating the body from the frame. I am going to strip the frame of the suspension and take it to a place in Toms River, NJ to have it blasted. I am then going to smooth the factory weld seams gusset accordingly. I will also be adding structural supports in key areas. Finally it will be taken to a place near me to be powder coated. Enjoy the pics! http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics007.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics008.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics010.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics014.jpg My gorgeous fiancée and helper!!! http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics036.jpg Yea…this is gonna change…haha http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics034.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics055.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics054.jpg |
VERY NICE! The tear down begins,......
|
Decided to do a little buttoning up on the motor for now...gonna run carbed for a little while until I can afford the fuel injection. I want to upgrade the suspension and rolling stock first...get her moving. Then possibly do the injection then body or vice versa... :faint:
Oh well...on to the pics...sorry for the clutter...too much crap in the garage!!!  http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics095.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics096.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics098.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics094.jpg |
That olds power looks killer, I get where your comming from. EFI is either expensive or it takes a bunch of your time to build using some of the home build options.
Lots to do, hard to pick where to start and what the priorities are.:willy: |

So like you said...all in stages. I am definitely knocking out the suspension first then wheels and tires to make her a roller. From there, we'll see what the bank account will allow. |
Very nice. Good luck.
|
Oops...slight change in plans...
Well...I think I might have taken a slight shift in directions...a coworker of mine had been working on me for a while to pick something up off him and oh well...I couldn't resist:
http://turbo4.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4202R.jpg I got a ridiculous deal on this baby! Goin' blowthrough now!!! :willy: :wow: :willy: |
What's the compression ratio in the motor?
Will it need to go lower to utilize that whirligig thing;)? Cool! :hail: |
Looks like a cool project! I like your choice in wheel! Hope we can help you with them when the time comes!

If it is either of the first two, then you got my business! |

Finally have a little bit of an update.
I have the engine compartment nice and cleaned up but made some more changes today so I have to redo a couple things...NO BIG DEAL because I am now closer to realizing the concept I was originally after. Today I purchased a full BMR Fabrication Suspension Kit from Fletcher's Customs...thanks Chad!!! I am planning on a ton of street driving with this thing so this felt like an affordable good start for me. I did not want to put a roll bar in this car, so my '84 Cutlass (originally a drag car) is what will get the turbo and a full SC&C suspension. If you have never talked to Marcus at SC&C...do it! He will educate you without making you feel too stupid.  Anyway, here's what the kit looks like! I subbed in the adjustable rear uppers. http://www.bmrfabrication.com/PKG/HP011.jpg |
Great looking parts. I love the pictures of the Family getting involved as well.
|
Very nice. Should make a HUGE difference.

My fiancee loves working on the stuff with me...that is until the bugs start to get at her. :willy: |

Compromises must be made when making a car that you can live with for many happy road miles.
I understand not wanting to cage a street car, I don't want to do that to my car either.... well not 'this' one anyway.;) |
Welp...here's a lilttle teaser. Whatchya think?
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a.../Turowski1.jpg |
Very nice man. I like the front bumper!
|
Dave look's like a great project.Hey Mike a protouring car has to have a full cage unless you wear a dress.

Quick update with more pics to follow tomorrow...
Scored a '68-'72 Chevelle 12bolt rear for peanuts!!! :unibrow: :unibrow: :unibrow: This will be the perfect candidate for the CPP Big Brake kit! Also continued work stripping the car apart...should have all the old suspension off by tomorrow and all the old brake lines out as well. Not sure if I will be able to stab the engine and tranny in, but went a little different direction with the front timing cover area. Going to replace the "bling bling" with stock, cleaned and repainted bracketry. It will be a cleaner package in my opinion overall and will allow me to mount the turbo (should I choose to use it ;) ) a lot easier. Pics to follow tomorrow! |

But then I just told her I can make the cross bar removable if I eventually do put the cage in there. |
Oh boy....I did it again.
I just couldn't resist. I missed the fuel injection and overdrive and practically bulletproof bottom ends. So I bought this today! :cheering: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...%20W31/LY6.jpg Well I got just the shortblock...10 minutes from my house off Craigslist. It is in his '69 Malibu that is running 10s and driving it to the track. I sounds nasty as all get out but no matter to me, this LY6 is staying VVT delete and will be getting L92 heads (~9.6:1 compression) and this guy: http://turbo4.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/4202R.jpg It will be backed by a 4L80e and my goal is pump gas, driven to the track, 10 sec boost passes with 18 mpg regular driving. It can be done...OH YES...it can be done! Oh yea, Santa got lost and dropped something off at my house today as well... http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics104.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics106.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics107.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics109.jpg Let's get this party STARTED!!!! :rockin: :_party: :beavis:  |
VERY NICE!!!
|
Some progress pics...frame is clean and ready to rock...uppers laid in there to see how everything is jiving.
Need to get the short block up in here to make sure I have the mounts where they need to be! http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics112.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics113.jpg And my outdoor guard kitty!!!! :lolhit: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...assPics110.jpg |
Got a nice update for today...
Been selling off a lot of my stalled projects and stuff I just couldn't use anymore and am making back some money I am spending on my wedding. This weekend I picked up the LY6 block, Edelbrock adapter plates and Energy suspension poly-mounts. I also got a few boxes from the guys in brown...so this morning I snuck out in the garage early and got a little done: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_6107.jpg I'll snap a few more pics tomorrow but so far I am very happy with the quality of the BMR stuff and with CPP's Big Brake Kit. With BMR I only had one thing not get shipped and was a small oversight on their part. It was in my hands within a few days. CPP I am a little angry with because they charged me shipping when they said it was free, they also told me everything was in stock when I was ordering (because I specifically asked about that...one of my reasons I bought their kit) then when my order wasn't charged in over a week I called and found the hubs were on backorder. :censored: :censored: :censored: That REALLY pissed me off and after a three week wait I finally got the brakes about 3.5 weeks after I ordered it. Not the end of the world, just hate being lied to. Regardless, I am very happy with the quality. More to come! |
Very cool. Looking good so far.
|
Little Update...
Progress has been slow because I am planning for the wedding but also trying to continue to clean out the garage. Starting to get some of the ancillary tasks done in the mean time. Also trying to figure out how to swing buying the valvetrain and oil pump/pan. All in due time it would seem. Anyways, today is I painted the short block I scored right near my house. LY6 with fly cuts already done. I am throwing stock L92s on her (assuming USPS ever delivers them!!!   ) but nevertheless, she is looking nice! Olds W-30 Bronze! Enjoy! http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_6150.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_6151.jpg |
