(CG) 69 Camaro

hi all

i have been modeling Scott Gulbranson 69 camaro for about a week now, thanks to the great pics he posted, but there is one bit that is not, the rear of the sub frame, and how it goes around the diff, it is not really important but i was tring to make the car as close to his as postible, if there r no pics its not a big deal i have pics of other 69 camaro's rear sub frame which i can base it on

just if u were wondering wat it was looking like atm i will post some renders for you

thanks for looks and i hope u like it so far

btw also like i said i was tring to make it farly acurate to wat hi real car is so if u can point out any bit thats r wrong please do

XcYZ 12-12-2005 06:29 AM

Wow! That's awesome! I can't wait to see more.

There's no rear subframe, the leaf springs locate directly to the body. I don't really have any pictures of that.

Steve1968LS2 12-12-2005 10:27 AM

You are rendering the WHOLE CAR? every part?? :faint:

Damn, that is way cool..

tomsullivan 12-13-2005 06:44 AM

thanks for the replys, i didnt really do much work on it today i just re-did the springs and shock.

@ XcYZ, thanks first of all, and just a question on the leaf springs, do u know of any car on this site that has them and may have pics of them. thanks

@Steve1969LS1, iam not goin to model all of it, just most of it, like everything that u would see if u where to take a really hard look at a car. iam not goin to do the pistion or cam etc but i will build he block, water pump, etc

XcYZ 12-13-2005 06:48 AM

Tom, shoot me an e-mail... [email protected] and I'll gladly help you out; get you details pictures, etc.

rwhite692 12-13-2005 11:10 PM

Scott make sure you send him some photos of you also, so he can render a "Scott" to place behind the wheel...

tomsullivan 12-24-2005 07:18 AM

rwhite692 01-05-2006 11:05 PM

Wow, that is impressive work. What is the purpose of doing this, is it just to have a 3D rendering, or to generate the mold tooling, etc. in order to make a scale diecast toy, or some such?

tomsullivan 01-06-2006 10:24 AM

thanks

as for the purpose of doin this i really just wanted somethign to challange me in 3d modeling, buts kinda grown in scale and ppl are taking interest in it

i also have big planes for the engine if i can get everythign organised with pictures and stuff, also if anyone knows of good sites with good pics of the kinda products in Scott engine it would help a lot :)

thanks
Tom

XcYZ 01-06-2006 10:51 AM

Tom is looking for hi res pictures of cranks, rods and pistons, etc. I don't have any of them on my computer... Hey Jody... :unibrow:

jski67 01-06-2006 10:00 PM

Hey Tom,

That stuff looks great. I'm a post editor that has grown into 3D animation over the last 5 years or so. I mostly do a lot of logo or straight motion graphic work, but I did just finish a ton of virtual set stuff for the Florida Lottery.

Anyway, modeling is where I'm the weakest. Are you box/spline modeling or something more advanced??? Self taught or did you get some schooling? I'm jeleous of your detail

I use 3ds max by the way...

Jason

tomsullivan 01-06-2006 10:25 PM

hi Jason, good to see some interest from a user of max

i would say about 90% of the modeling done so far is box-modeling, the rest was done with splines, if i remember right the springs, and the faceplate for the wheel, also the top seal for the gearbox was done with it, i use it a lot when u have a squarish object and then u have semi circles on the side of them, because the other way of doin it is boolean and that a terible tool.

i self taught myself for the first year or so and then found this great site http://www.3d-palace.com/ there are some free tuts there but the best one u ahve to buy i have brought 2 of them (the matrix apu one and the firefly one) and if u cna complete them u will have the skill to do anythign really.

btw i also did some more work

http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/6...er019lb.th.jpg

http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/6...or015ow.th.jpg

http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/8...or020ox.th.jpg

bascily done the intercooler and the radiator

and thanks for the comment jason :)

hope u like them

jski67 01-07-2006 02:44 PM

Thanks for the reply Tom!

3D palace looks like a cool site, I'll check out those tutorials. I go to http://forums.cgsociety.org/ for a lot of info...in reality, I know there's a ton of good tutorials on the net. It's just committing myself to sitting down and learning :)

So I need to get better at modeling...but I also want to learn Mental Ray...and I just got an upgrade to Combustion for compositing...and I need to start figuring out some High Def stuff for a future project...ugg the list just goes on and on...

Jason

tomsullivan 01-10-2006 10:33 AM

yeah teh list always grows mine is manly improving my 2d skill( i have none atm)

just did a render with everything together, and as u can see i start on the engine

http://img492.imageshack.us/img492/8...ther1qs.th.jpg

here a closer render of the engine

http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/4536/jg5pg.th.jpg

thanks
Tom

tomsullivan 01-24-2006 07:30 AM

hi all

i thought i would just show u wats been happening the past coupld of weeks

Scott has been updating the page reguraly but i thought i should post them here for u.

iam sure that everyone of you could find many mechanial probs with the crank and pistons but to the untrained eye i can get away with it :)

XcYZ 01-26-2006 06:54 PM

Color really makes it pop:

Huxsol81 01-26-2006 08:03 PM

Yes it does, very slick! :hail:

907rs 01-26-2006 08:19 PM

That's cool! I think Tom needs to start rendering project cars.

tomsullivan 01-27-2006 07:57 AM

thanks its really starting to take shape :)

i think its about time i moved onto the body, but i kinda need some pics, i had a look through all the camaros in the member secton and didnt find much that i could use atm. altho i found great pics of the underside and bits of the interior

so basically iam looking for pics of the front end atm, pics of the front fenders, the bonnet (and underside), front bumpers, grills, lights, those little fog light etc etc

iam kinda hoping that people who are building a camaro or owns one can help me out here, i just want to put as much detail as i can into it

thanks
Tom

CAMAROBOY69 01-27-2006 08:58 AM

Dang that is awesome!!!! I bet Scott is soo excited that your making his entire car. He must be honored!!
The most amazing part is that you are doing that just by looking at pics. You dont even have the measurements. Thats amazing!
HOw much did that software cost you?

tomsullivan 01-27-2006 09:05 AM

thanks

and the cost for me was $500 i got a student one but the proper ones cost a lot
http://estore.autodesk.com/dr/v2/ec_...pn=1&sid=19515
3dsmax 8 is the one i use.

thanks agian

XcYZ 02-02-2006 09:23 PM

Here's the latest update to Tom's work. The intercooler is bit large (easy fix), but the whole thing is just amazing. He's been working a little with the body, and with his attention to detail, it's just incredible.

All of the 3D models here

Kris Horton 02-07-2006 08:46 PM

Tom, the work on this model is looking great! What is your career background? Any experience at a real job or has it all been freelance/hobby so far? Where are you based out of?

Very cool so far, I'm eager to see the body of the car. I wish I had the time to sit down and model all those little pieces, it's a lot of fun and like you said, a real challenge.

Keep up the good work!

XcYZ 02-07-2006 09:00 PM

Tom tells me there's 7.5 millions polygons in this image:

http://www.lateral-g.org/rendition/3.../Feb_assy1.jpg

race-rodz 02-07-2006 09:02 PM

maybe i could get this guy to do a rendering for me, since that horton guy never responds to emails or im's :unibrow:

EDIT: just messing with mr kris, i wasnt actually lookin for anybody else to do a rendering for me.

Musclerodz 02-07-2006 09:17 PM

Holy CRAP!!!! Awesome work. That has to be labor intensive.

Hey jackass! :D You've got mail. I've been out of town and just got my new computer set up this weekend. It's going to make my life a lot easier. No more crashing trying to render monster-sized images for posters!

Scott, that's pretty cool. That's a lot of polygons. I'd like to see a wireframe shot of that.

You out there Tom?

Kris

907rs 02-08-2006 12:09 AM

Amazing detail, Tom.

tomsullivan 02-08-2006 12:53 AM

thanks for the comments everyone :)

@ Kris, the last render i had to set it up using vray proxis, becuase my computer crashed evertime i tried rendering it. so the the wire frame for that shot will not really show a proper wireframe, but in have got a couple of wire shots form earlier

as for the poly count, it doesnt really need to be that high but with those rims, i have a mesh smoother modifer on them set to about 3 or 4, that kicks the poly count up a lot

thanks Tom

Kris Horton 02-08-2006 03:20 AM

Looks really good Tom. My software has a similar means of mesh smoothing. It displays really clean and low-poly looking and the subdivisions are only temporary until the surface is finalized. Pretty cool. I took a shot at modeling the Currie rear end too. I don't get to do stuff like this too often, but I set aside 2 hours tonight to model something a little different. It looks decent so far, but I just eyeballed it from Scott's pics like you're doing but I can't say I'm ambitious enough to model all the things you're modeling (no time to devote to it right now... :() I've included screencaps of my model in the various display modes.

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/5...iegrey13ok.jpg

P.S. Are you looking for work as a poly-modeler? I know a few places that are hiring right now here in the States.

Kris

tomsullivan 02-08-2006 04:01 AM

thanks Kris, is that rhino? or is it a specialised 3d program? looks great tho :)

btw u got a pm thanks :)

XcYZ 02-23-2006 07:20 AM

More eye candy. Tom is doing a fantastic job.

http://www.lateral-g.org/rendition/3...is_on_road.jpg

Speedster 02-23-2006 07:33 AM

That is just awesome stuff.
Pretty soon you will have Scott's car going down the road in "Toy Story 3 - Woody gets a PT Camaro"

XcYZ 02-28-2006 09:41 PM

How about a clay model?

http://www.lateral-g.org/rendition/3...3DassyDark.jpg

tomsullivan 02-28-2006 10:38 PM

thanks Scott for keeping this thread up to date, i almost forgot about it

at the monent iam doing another render simlar to that one but hopfull u will be able to see the details a lot better, if it goes well i will do a couple of better ones tonight, seeing as there are a couple of missing things (like the brakes) and i also have to fix the black mark on the fuel tank, i dont know how it got there tho :S

as for the engine we almost have a n/a engine :) most of the engine is there, all the details around the front is done such as the water pump, alt, and power steering pump. now i just gotto work on the intake and exhaust

but everything is starting to fall into place :)

thanks for comments
Tom
