Stielow wins the road course section (Motorstates Challenge) Brian Finch wins overall
Beat Brian Finch in second place by a second. Impressive since this is a brand new car with zero time on it, no track time at all. He was going fast, but not all-out due to the car being brand new. Also tells you how fast Brian is..................
Now it's on to Marks favorite part, the autocross................ Jody |
Pretty impressive considering he hasn't had any time to get the car sorted out. Looking forward to pictures and more results.
Thanks for the update  |

I call shotgun in Mark's car in Pahrump for the Optima Invitational. :D
|
Big  to Mark!! And a very nice runner up Brian!!
Good to see the cars getting used!! :lateral:  |
Also very impressed with both Mark and Brian. No one was else even close.
What I wonder is how they value points for each segment, because there is a high likely hood Brian could win the autocross. |
nice work guys. Great car Mark.
Can't wait to see it when it gets to Woodland. Just kidding Charles. Vince |
I'm very impressed. However, Mark's starting point in easily beyond most folks dialed in point. He knows how to build a car. He's been there, done that. I'm betting he'll pick up another second or two once he get's used to the car and gets the feel right.

pics? vid?

Great driver, great car parts, huge power = no brainer. Congrats Mark, I know you wanted to get r dun.
|
Most impressive,props to both...
|
Thanks for the update.
That track rewards good HP and good brakes. Congrats to Mark! |
Congrats to Mark. That is awesome.
|
No competition in that field....:wow:
|
Just edited the title, Brian Finch wins overall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|

I am pretty proud, that is our motor in that car. |

It is a NA 418 we build, made 504 HP to the tires and 486TQ to the tires, so it is almost square. He is 2 for 2 since the new engine. We talked about putting a 100 shot of nitrous on it for the road coarse to help catch Mark but I guess he decided not too. Probably better do that before next year, LOL! |
Anybody that builds cars can appreciate what Mark did by bringing a just born car to the track. He was up till about 1:am Thursday night bolting the car together. To work that well on the road course right out of the box is amazing. I hate to see him when it gets it dialed in to it's potential.

And i forgot to mention how bitchiness the autocross was. I almost got jackass out of 1st gear.

Like has already been said over and over, it's a major achievement for both guys but you have to give it up for Brian hanging with a guy who has logged 1000s of road course miles on the Nurburgring no less and built a bunch of world class cars. Extremely well done, to both of them!
Brian's been cleaning up at every event this year but Mark is going to be hard to beat twice in a row! There's a target on your bumper, Brian! |

Thanks for the news!
Was there just the two events? Or were the cars judged for show points too? David |
Congrats to both.
Dave there were no carshow points however Mark did win the peoples choice by a large number. The real impressive thing to me is not only is Brian winning on the track, he is driving to and from the events. Proving to me his car is truely "Pro-touring" like the cars that come out of Marks stable. Oh and don't worry Mark, no pictures of the loading yesterday.....haha |

Frank, I'm sure you know this, but just in case. That's a big no, no on a road course, way to dangerous. So what are the specs: bore x stroke, VVT?, Head work?, inquiring minds want to know. :D |
Actually did not know that as a matter of fact.
Motor is a 418CI, forged 4340 bottom end, L92 heads, small cam (for a 418), No VVT. Makes right at 600HP and 580 TQ. We are running a FAST LSXR intake and TB on this one. With a bigger cam we can get more horsepower but lose TQ, so a lot of testing found the perfect balance. That TQ coming off the corners on the road coarse is great. And it is KILLER on the autocross. These motor are built for boats that run sustained 4000 - 5000 RPMs under intense load. So if they can live in a boat, they can live anywhere. We change the cam specs for more friendly power curve in a car, and use the same guts otherwise. The long blocks with cam, coils, wires, minus intake, injectors, TB are only $7400. Ready to run with a FAST intake, tuning / ECM, Road Race pan is under $11K. So they are a smokin deal. But before I announced our engine program I wanted to run one in the worst possible torture test and know one is driving 1000 to 4000 miles to and from events and running nearly as many laps as Brian! that boy does not need a accelerator peddle, he needs a idle / full throttle switch! And he is getting 20 MPG with it too! |

Sorry, he asked.

i tell ya what though..Randy Bell in the grey primered car came in 5th and has a mild ls1 lacking a ton of power to these guys..id love to see Randy with a motor like Prodigys in his car..Randy is just lacking the funds not the talent...
|
It's the guys with the most practice that are really good, yes you have to have some talent but the more laps you put on the better you'll get, Mark is a very good driver with many laps behind his belt and could probably beat most of us in a Miata! As for Finch I'm not sure where he get his practice besides hitting all these events but whatever he's doing is paying off. And I think by talking to Randy last year he races very frequently also, so what I'm trying to say is it's better to be a good driver than have a great car. I wish I could've made it I surely need the practice!

Thanks for all my Buddies
Well I'm beat..... It has been a long 4 months since I got the car back from paint to get it together.
I would like to thanks all my buddies for helping me get my car going. If it weren't for them I would not have of gotten it done. I would like to thank Paul and Joe VanNus for painting the car and getting it tuned up last week. My buddy Ryan Kuhlenbeck wiring the whole car including the ECM and ABS. My old college roommate Dave Mikels for help get the engine sorted out. Brian Thomson for building the engine. Kyle and Stacy Tucker for giving me help with all the DSE stuff and the initial tuning set up. Laura my girlfriend for putting up with the buildup. Joe Borschke for all the fab work and letting me use his shop. Craig Adams for swinging by and working with me on the trim pieces. Will Handel for moral support and bring parts to the track. Gordon Rojewski for finding my loose bolt and helping with the photo shoot. Charley Lillard for giving me a hard time. I could not be happier. For a car I drove for the first time Thursday at noon to get to Motorstate and do well is awesome. I wanted do well enough to get an invite to Optima and not break the car. We all had a great time at Motorstate it is very well run event and it was great to see a lot of old friends. Now I have the rest of the summer to sort the car and get the rest of the stuff working. I have a small over temp issue that we need to sort out. Once we get that we should gain back about another 75 HP. I’ll get the ABS working should be worth a little. Well it is off to Wal-Mart to practice Auto-X, need to gain about 1 second…where did I put the construction cones…..lol Thanks Stielow |
Mark YOU ARE THE MAN!! WOW!! And Mr Finch is no slouch eather. Way to go guy's
|
And I'm stranded in Chicago trying to get home because of a storm that went thru here. I'm blaming in on the autocross.
|
i suppose you flew outa ohare?...Matt (bowtie67) works on them planes and he was up late all weekend blame him..lol..
|
Congrats Mark! Want another 69 to dial in for the track?!? :unibrow:
