Rear Tire Rub
I have 68 Camaro Convertible Hotchkis TVSS suspension and the rear tires rub the fender lips when going over the slighest bump/dip in the road @ speed. Tire/wheel combo is 17" rim with 285/40 tire. I have roughly 3/4" space between top of tire and fender trim. I have a decent sound system in trunk, 2-10" subs and an amp which i know has led to this problem.
Future plans include going to 18" rim/tire but that's not for another year or so till I can save the $$ to do so. Front i have no issues combo is 235/40 on 17" gap there is about 1-3/4" but i would like to lower here. Suggestions? Car has been done over a year and i have about 1500 miles on it so I thhink I have experienced all the settling that will happen. |
I don't think there's much you can do.
Some wheels have a thick mounting pad that can be milled slightly for more backspacing, which would get the tire further away from the quarter. But if the tire is near the wheel house, that's not going to be an option either. What wheels are they, and how far is the tire from the wheel house? |
Like Mark said, You cam mill a little off the mounting pad but a 10 with a 285 is maxing out a Camaro wheelwell. See where it's rubbing and if you can do any rolling or trimming and seriously consider going down to a 275 which may be all you need since you don't usually see a 285 in a 1st gen.

Yes, 285 on a 10 is the right size but is too bog for the car. I have pulled it off BARELY on a 9.5

I have a 275 on 10 inch rim on my 69. The backspacing is 5.9 inches It is tight and I had to do some trimming of the wheel opening. If your rear end is even slightly off center it will rub worse. I ended up adding a 1/8 spacer on one side because it was rubbing a little on the inside.

No big Loss here, I bought them as a set 3-years ago for $1200, sold them last night for $1000. Rather than buying 2-New tires I just decided, with my wifes urging, to just bite the bullet and go for some new rims and tires. I searched last night and came up with these choices:
Boze Lateral-G http://www.zeforged.com/lateralg.html Boze Injected http://www.zeforged.com/injected.html Rushforth Livewires It's a black convertible, black top. I don't want the exposed hardware and unsure as to finish on the spokes. Brushed Center? Powder Coated Color? Full Polish? Thanks for any Input, Opinions, suggestions are welcome. 18" or 17" ? |

Thanks for the compliment! I seem to be falling towards the Rushforths. Just need to decide on the finish. I like the smoked titanium as well as the brushed.

Yes, we can build the wheel without the hardware in 2 piece. The valve stem will be inside the wheel on the drop center.
