Good Guys Columbus

Flying out tomorrow morning.

My understanding is that SCAR, Ring Brother's Speedlane, the 54 corvette with ZRI engine http://www.fastclips.com/video/776/1...rvette-zr1-ls9 will be battling it out for this years SMOY.

Hopefully Super Cuda http://www.legendarymotorcar.com/site/552 and a Bad ass Black69 Mustang that was at SEMA will show up.

Does anybody know any of the cars competing for SMOY?

syborg tt 07-07-2010 01:05 PM

It's been blistering hot - my kind of weather!

I never paid attention to the locations, while browsing on this site, to see that some of the familiar names are neighbors! :D

I'll be there at least two of the three days.

Eddie Merlot's? Keep saying I am going to try that but never seem to make it. Evidently, Columbus likes to eat - there a LOT of restaurants... :unibrow:

ironworks 07-07-2010 08:52 PM

I thought it was called texas steak house.... Could be wrong??? Just go north on the 71? I that's it

Probably Texas Roadhouse. If so, and it's north on 71 from the fairgrounds, it's the same exit (Polaris Pwky) as Eddie Merlot's. As I said, I've never been to Eddie Merlot's, just curious because they're suposed to be prime, aged, steaks - blah, blah, blah. There are a few "premium" steakhouses here I plan to test, if I stay log enough... I normally hit Texas Roadhouse, O'Charley's, or (my personal favorite) Outback.

I was going to ask you if Eddie's lived up to the hype, if that's where you had been. :)

Getting hungry now, time to go to bed before I start munching.

Streetwerkz 07-07-2010 09:44 PM

Texas roadhouse is good yes 71 north, Polaris parkway exit, eat there alot, and ShiChi Japanese steak house off sawmill road and 161 even better!!
both price about the same, around $25 plus drinks

I believe both SCAR and THRILLBILLY from Lakeside will be there competeing,as well as a whole slew of others. It was rumored that there would be over 35 in all.

yeah buddy, we know how to eat:D
If you go to Texas roadhouse, I suggest the Texas t-bone with white gravy, mushrooms, cheese and mash potatoes, pile it high on ur steak (rare for me) and go to heaven.

good thing it's lunch time, now I'm hungry:lol:

Oh yes 35 in all competing...they say that every year and the lot is always full. However we all know that only about 5 to 9 are real competitors. Plus, Goodguys always manages to pick 1 car for the 5 that has no business in the top five.

POLITICS is a business for some.
I think this year the top 5 will be some of the best we've seen yet.
I also think SMOY has taken alot of prestige away from SROY.
They just dont seem as "over-the-top" as they used to be in years past.

I believe your right about the top five. The bar will be raised again. The SMOY seems to be taken center stage the past few years, but that could change in the years ahead also.

Yeah, is it an increase in street machine popularity, or a decrease in street rod popularity?

The street rod fans aren't getting any younger.

I wouldn't think that's it. I have no factual evidence, just observation, but street rods seem to continually renew their enthusiast base with fresh blood. Many of the guys who are "old" street rodders now would have spent their teenage and young adult years in the custom era, and evolved into street rodders. I have quite a few friends who are now in their seventies who tell countless stories about their old fords and mercs, with the skirts, whitewalls, etc. Some of them are now "old" street rodders.

The traditional (not rat) rod lifestyle is huge with 20-somethings now. They build period correct cars and try to live the entire pre-war lifstyle. I can see some of them building mega-buck street rods in future. The whole street rod movement is going that direction. From Boydster, to Impression, to First Love, to Deucenberg, along with the huge traditional trend in general, you can see modern street rods being slowly re-invented.

I think it's just a typical trend pattern. People gravitate towards what is "hot" and right now street rod style muscle cars are the "in" thing. Eventually moods will change, curiousity will set in, and something "new" will emerge.

Any pictures yet?
I tried to find a last minute flight to Columbus or Cleveland.
$ 950.00 was the cheapest..............

toddshotrods 07-09-2010 03:12 PM

I spent twelve hours helping a friend move yesterday. Between being tired and us getting a little rain earlier, I decided to rest up today but I'll be there tomorrow and Sunday snapping like crazy. I'll post lots of pics after I get home. Most likely today was pretty mild because the forecast called for possible thunderstorms Friday, all week. The sky is pretty dark (but no rain right now) as I type this.

Just a warning - I am so addicted to big budget hot rods that I didn't even walk the rest of the fairgrounds last year. I spent three days in the Awards, Manufacturers', and Swap areas. If you really plan to visually dissect these cars, three days isn't much time. You can stare at one for a half-hour, and come back a couple hours later and see things you didn't see...

Fluid Power 07-09-2010 04:41 PM

Rain squashed everything today boys, Autocross was called off. The good news is it really cooled things off and broke the humidity. The SMOY cars are nuts! Rodger has his work cut out for him. I shot about 5 pictures before the rain blew in.

Oh well, tomorrow is supposed to be awesome weather wise.

Darren

ccm399 07-09-2010 05:35 PM

The wife and I are planning on heading out around 630am. We were planning on heading down today but the weather looks bleak....looks like we choose wisely.

Can't wait!!!!!!

Chris

garickman 07-09-2010 06:25 PM

Anyone have credible info or pics on SMOY yet? How many cars? Who are the heavy hitters there? DSE, Ring Brothers, Lakeside... Pics would be aswesome if anyone has any yet.

toddshotrods 07-09-2010 06:46 PM

Man the rain must have really sent everyone running for cover! When I can't go to events I usually find coverage on HubGarage or something - only two cars in one garage so far...

Roger M 07-09-2010 07:34 PM

Here is link to a bunch of photos from Thursday.

We showed up this afternoon and by the time we made it to the SMOY/SROY area it was already a ghost town. Here's a couple nice Nomads and a Caddy that were parked near the area.

There was on and off downpours all day. Right before 5 a thunderstorm rolled in and everyone left in a hurry.

Going back in the morning.
