Ls Starter Emergency
OK am i the FIRST ONE.
the starter i have is too Short to meet up with the flywheel. i have a LQ9 with the thick crank flange and the original starter. i Have a Mcleod Aluminum flywheel that is listed to fit 97-06 LS ALL I need a starter!!! that the nose cone is 3/8" longer than the standard starter??? wth :willy: |
Ya killed it!
 |
Post up the distance from mounting flange to starter nose -- so someone can compare what you have and what 3/8" longer "is".
|
sure sounds like the flywheel is the issue (assuming no spacer on the crank which the auto trans LQ9's had, but must be removed for a stick install). Should be able to use the stock starter unless they spec a particular unit (which they don't).

ok this "Auto" LQ9 has no spacer the crank is just 3/8" (give or take) longer out the back than the LS2 i have here.
i have had to use a 3/8 spacer between the block and bell housing so the pilot shaft doesnt bottom out. This is now a GONG SHOW here is a pic of the starter, this is a 02 Camaro 6 spd starter, it is identical to the starter that came with the LQ9 Auto. it needs to be 3/8 longer than this one is. the measurement on this pic is approx 1.75 this is the face of the outer mounting bolt boss |

That's a FORD LS starter -- try using a GM part... :D |
Hey don't even laugh we actually looked at the option of using a ford starter and bolting it to the bell housing!! and it would have worked!
but decided to go get a power master and my wizard is madly machining it and thinks it will work. so now i am also the only one i know who has solved the problem. well maybe thats a little premature but i will let you know tomorrow |

Using a Ford starter on a Chevy - in a Ford... Would that qualify for a "Ford in Ford" pick?? :woot: |
