Lateral-g I racing weekly league racing and smack talking session

Well after being on this site for the past few years I have gained quite a few great friends from all over the country. I have also been doing some online racing on a site called Iracing.com. Well they now have a way were you can host a race and have a password to enter. So I have been talking to some people about just having a regular league racing night maybe once a week. So here we go.

Now to do this your would have to be a member of Iracing, which is 12.95 a month. Tell them I sent you. [email protected]. You will need a steering wheel and break pedal setup. Logitech G25 or G27 would good units to get used off ebay. And a gaming style headset to be able to chime in and Talk. Or in some cases smack talk. If 60 people show up to race they will post 60 cars on the grid.

I'm thinking about racing the FR500 mustang at Lime rock and Laguna Seca for the first few weeks. I will sponsor the money to host the race, 3 whole dollars :unibrow: :unibrow: . The winner each week can brag online.

This is to have fun with the great friends we have all met on this site. Sure it is still about the win, but don't worry if you you lack talent. Shoot I think you can sign up and just spectate if you wanted.

SO who is in.

Here is a practice lap from Road Atlanta in the Mustang.

Looks pretty cool. I'm digging the graphics.

96z28ss 08-31-2010 09:23 AM

sounds like a lot of fun.

Josh69 08-31-2010 09:44 AM

Wow, that looks really cool. I have been waiting for GT5 to come out to have an excuse to get a G37 wheel, maybe I'll have to reconsider getting one sooner.

ironworks 08-31-2010 10:33 AM

It is alot of fun. I have been racing for almost 2 years. You can go in at 9pm and race in a 30 lap race with guys from all over the world. This is not a video game, there no cheesy nitrous or short cuts. You have to fine tune your set up which can be complex and adjust the car for different surfaces and tracks. The mustang is pretty simple. There are ton of tracks and cars for beginner to very advanced. The C6r Is one of my favorite, but man is that thing a handful.

I figure this would be more fun for just the hangin out aspect then the who really gets first place. But there are some guys on this site that are pretty fast on there.

This is way better the GT5. You actually have to get the set up right to really be able to keep up with the fast guys. Plus the side by side action is really fun.

This looks like it's up my alley, I have friends that do the online NASCAR deal, but I have never been a fan. I'll check it out and start looking for a wheel.

GregWeld 08-31-2010 11:41 AM

I'm gone for a week so will get that when I get back. Then it will be:

Not for too long, the oxygen is thinner up here and you will get light headed in no time.

speedjohnston 08-31-2010 01:18 PM

I have actually been looking for an excuse to join. :)

Bring it on Dream Weaver. You can throw one of the telephone books out the window at me that Greg is sitting on.

Funny, I was just thinking about trying iRacing out. They have a special going where if you buy 1 month you get 2 free!

You know me - I start out a little light in the head...

GregWeld 08-31-2010 04:18 PM

Ordered a G27 on Amazon --- $219 should have it in a couple days. I'll sign up for the iRacing thing when I get home. Then it's SHOW TIME!

Tracy -- I'm lik'n' your wall technique! EEEEEEHHHHHHHAAAAAAAA

I just hope my connection speed in the shed is going to allow me to race from out there. That connection is a wifi - via an antenna - to the wifi in the house... So I'm going wifi to a repeater - to an antenna - to another wifi via another antenna. If it doesn't work I'll just have to take over the TV room. LOL

Do we really need talking things? I saw a headphone set with a mic when I ordered the G27? Also -- I noticed they offered a "stick shift holder" for the GameSeat chair --- should I have ordered that too? Are you guys using stick shifts?

ironworks 08-31-2010 04:29 PM

The mic is fun to chit chat, but maybe it would be better if you did not have one Greg. I don't use the stick shift, I use the paddle shift on the steering wheel. My gaming table is kinda weak and I thought the shifter seemed flimsy

GregWeld 08-31-2010 04:36 PM

Yea.... maybe you're right.

Like my mother always said. God gave you two ears and one mouth - maybe you should listen twice as much as you talk.

I never did understand what the hell she was talking about.

Greg, you sound like my boy, the one and only, Bruce Lee!

96z28ss 08-31-2010 04:48 PM

let me get the wheel and pedals and I will join.
I'll just use my office chair for now.

GregWeld 09-01-2010 03:00 PM

Since I'm an all Apple guy...not a fruit... but for computers... I'll have to go get a specific computer for this whole racing shibangy.

What do you guys think of this?

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/deskt...rea-51_anav1~~

XcYZ 09-01-2010 03:12 PM

I used to race Grand Prix Legends ALL the time before I had kids. GPL was the basis for I-Racing back when those guys worked at Sierra Sports. It was fantastic. The more seat time you got, the faster you got, it was extremely addicting. Wish I had the free time to do now.

Lets make sure you can drive. If all you want to do is smack talk you can do it cheaply. But that compute awesome.

There are some other compaines that market just to I racing.
Main Performance PC
Oreilly performance PC

The computer requirements are listed on I racing's site. You can turn down certain aspects of game to run on a slow computer.

I bought a set of these pedals a few months ago. WOW
http://www.cannonsimulationtechnologies.com/

Who says you can't buy talent.... I bought about 1.5 seconds at Laguna with these.

GregWeld 09-01-2010 04:34 PM

A computer won't help be drive... I'll suck at that -- but was thinking that it's all about the graphics and the display... I was going to use a 42" HD plasma I have out in the shed... and need a computer - so wasn't sure if a medium speed version with a high tech video graphics card is "great" --- or if you need the whiz bang gaming computer.

THOSE PEDALS ARE OMG!!

Love that!

EEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAA

There is a forum, once you join you can get any question you need answered. There are some smart guys on there.

Psydwaze 09-02-2010 12:16 AM

Count me in on a weekly league. As a suggestion, could we run some of the unused track configurations, like Watkins Glen Classic or Road Atlanta Short. Neither of those are scheduled for the series I run in, so I'm more curious than anything.

I run a 5770 with triple 22"s at 5040x1050 on an $800 Core2Duo workstation. I wouldn't trade the wider field of view of three monitors for any single screen.

Lino, welcome to the site. All of us need to race the track you know the least about. Or figure out how to chain your car to Greg's car with all those phone books to help slow you down.

Well guys I think we are up to 8-10 people so far. Since most are west coast at this point, except Tracy Weaver. I'm thinking about running Monday night at say 6:30 pacific. We will have maybe a 1/2 hour to hour practice session, with 2 laps of qualifiying and maybe a 15-20 lap main event. The starting order will be inverted. The fast guys have to make it through the field from the back. Sand baggers will be make fun of to no end online. The winner of the race has to share his setup with the rest of the field.

We also had the idea of doing a 5 lap demo derby just for fun. You just have to make your car last for 5 laps. But top qualifiers go to the front. But hopefully you have enough speed to get far enough away to not get pounded in turn one.

THAT is exactly the kind of info I was looking for! Thanks so much for posting it. Welcome to :lateral:

96z28ss 09-02-2010 09:03 AM

oh 6:30 is a bit to early for me.
I'll see what I can do. may have to skip practice laps.

ironworks 09-02-2010 09:25 AM

Then tell me what works. 6:30 is early for me also. I would like to 8 or 9 but that might hurt the east coasters.

96z28ss 09-02-2010 09:36 AM

I'd like 7:30ish but that might be late for east coasters.
Maybe we should split it into east and west times.

ironworks 09-02-2010 10:12 AM

So far Tracy Weaver in Nebraska s the farthest away and he is 2 hours ahead. I'm pretty sure it will take him a few weeks to get online, since he has to put windows on his MAC to race with us. 730 is great time for me. That's 9:30 at Tracy's house.

Psydwaze 09-02-2010 11:16 AM

6:30pm is kinda pushing it for me too.

Rodger: Does it let you run a long qualifying session, like around 20-30 minutes? I know thats more than the proposed two laps, but a 7pm open qualifying session could serve as a warm-up/B.S session before a 7:30pm race.

ironworks 09-02-2010 11:53 AM

Maybe we can host a race this weekend to see exactly all the options. I have seen 20 minute qualifying sessions. We will have to research the options before next week.

I'm good with 7:30 for a 30-45 qualifying session and 8:15 for a 15 lap race.

I went shopping for montiors today == learned a couple of things I didn't know.
Got my G27 today -- so now just need to get the computer. I'm thinking just getting a Dell with i7 and the 5770 card... should be good to go.

ironworks 09-02-2010 07:08 PM

Wow Greg I guess the saying Go big or go home is perfect for you some ways.

Let me know when your online.

GregWeld 09-02-2010 07:38 PM

That's just the way I roll... as my 23 year old would say.

I'm out of here for a couple weeks - so won't be on line til then.

After watching the triple monitor video you linked to --- I can hardly wait to get started!
