Get some round bars at the hardware store. It cost me $12. Starting with the seat back, you need to add one vertical bar and 3 "S" shaped horizontal bars on each side and then cut off the old bars to make room for the larger wheel well. Place the vertical bar in the depression of the existing springs. Make sure you put wet towels down before you weld. The old padding burns very easily. The seat bottom is more of a challenge. There is one wire that needs 3 clips undone. The wire needs to be bent with vise grips and then re attach the 3 clips in the new position. I found my welding pliers worked the best on opening these clips. Cut the two wiggly springs after you have re attached the wire. Add 2 bars and then cut off the corner of the frame.

This is awesome... thank you for posting the detailed pics. I needed this info too so this is perfect. I will be doing mine in a month or two.
Thanks! |
Great Pictures And Info.
Now If I Can Make Mine Folding Also, All Will Be Good!!! THEY DID THIS ON MUSCLE CARS SEVERAL YEARS AGO.. ALSO THAT ROD LOOKS LIKE "PENCIL ROD" = SMALL 1/4 - 5/16 NON-DEFORMED RE-BAR USED WITH BRICKWORK, AVAILABLE AT A MASONRY SUPPLY YARD. |
thanks this is great info
 :hail:  |
I used 8' of 1/4" rod and 4' of 5/16" rod. Costs about $12 at the hardware store.

I printed out all your pics & modded my rear seat today. Its all done except for the welding. (i dont weld nor own a welder) Your pics were spot on & the seat fit perfect around the tubs. You saved me a ton of time. Thanks again.

Can anyone tell me if this applies to a 69 rear seat as well, or would there be a difference in dimension?
|
I have a 69, it worked perfect for me. Should all be the same, except maybe convertible.

Not sure how I missed this the first go around. I have a convertible. (69) I will drag it out of the rafters and see how it looks and compares.

I just finished narrowing a FOLD-DOWN REAR SEAT
I just finished narrowing a 1967 fold-down rear seat for a customer of mine and documented all of it on Team Camaro (www.camaros.net) and wanted to share it with you guys since there was some interest. There are dozens of fully-detailed pics too!
Nice job on the standard seat! similar to what I did on the fold-down... Here's the link: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=214861 |
Thanks for this! It worked perfectly minus catching the seat on fire a few times lol.
|
Could you ?
My car is in a shop 2 hrs away .. is this something worth doing without the car here to fit it to ?
Seats will be recovered |

Has anyone done this to a conv and documented the pics?

Hey Doug. The seat is modified nearly the same, just subtract the difference in length between the long and short rear seats. Roughly 53" - 49"- 4" (2" per side). The harder part (for me) is modifying the lower rear interior panels. The width has to be stretched because the mini tubs don't allow the panels to sit straight. I suppose a modified lower armrest panel could be made rather than modifying the originals

Thanks Scott. Hope all is well with you. 67 is doing great.
