72 Camaro Build

My son wanted me to start a build thread of my 72 camaro so he can try posting photo's for me.It's std. 72 car there was no rust to speak of just some panel damage from when they try to load it with a fork lift. I built my own sub frame that will use c6 componets.A home built 4 link. strange coil overs at each corner. LS2 w/t56 6 speed, moser 9inch 3:73 gears,no body mods, stock interior w/corbeau GTSII seats,8 pt. 1.75x.125 DOM roll cage,Fikse profil 13's 18x11 w/315/30/18 frts,18x12 w/335/30/18 rear, vintage A/C,custom auto sound secert audio system, and a top secert paint color.

Very nice work, looken real nice. Scott what are you using for ends on the rear end links??

coolwelder62 10-09-2010 08:23 PM

The frt. is a wide poly bushing from ridetech, rear is a delrin incased johnny joint from ballistic fabrication w/9/16 thur bolt's.I really like the way DSE quadra links is built and works,so I built mine in the same fashion.I used 1.250X.120 wall 4130 tube for connecting link's & 2in.X .125wall 4130 tubing for the subframe conector's.The bay bar's are next on the list of project's.Will have Brandon keep posting photo's as work progresses.

It is nice to see another 2nd gen build. Thanks for the photos and we need more!

Great job and love to see the progress. Good luck with it!

Brian

coolwelder62 10-10-2010 08:09 AM

Thank's Brian, It's up to Brandon as to how soon the photo's get posted.I still can't figure it out. I have more shot's we could post, but you know how teenager's are.Everything is on their time frame. Now that he has figured it out I will try a find a way to blackmale him with something he want's or need's.

66LS7 10-10-2010 08:59 AM

Looks great can't wait to see it on the ground as a roller. It's good to see more 2nd gen Camaro's being built, they are my favorite. I see you are doing a cage in it, are you going to keep the back seat?

coolwelder62 10-10-2010 09:51 AM

Randy I am thinking of doing a rear shelf like DSE put Dale jr's 72.Under the shelf will be (of course OPTIMA yellow top-my pal Jimi Day has made sure I have a garage full of those.)Power inveter, 12V.air compressor(for ajusting tire pressuers during track days & auto x's,low profile jack & complete tool kit and all the radio componet's.I really want to make the power tour in 2011.

My 14 year old figured the photo resizing out.Now I am trying to get him to resize what I did today. Then I can post'm.I was able to post over on the nova site because you didn't have to down size them.KID's gotta love'm.

7TSS 10-10-2010 04:43 PM

Cool project. Wish I had the talent to fab my own stuff. :hail:

Btw here's a simple to use picture resizer I found online

coolwelder62 10-10-2010 05:22 PM

Thank's Goodwin,I have to fab my own stuff.Because my wife hide's the check book and the credit card's so I can't use them.If it wasn't for the blood I sell every tues. & thurs. And the dairy cow stalls I clean out every other night, I wouldn't get any part's bought.

Here are some more shots of what I did today.I fabed up a radiator cover plate which will need some corner's welded on & then some fender/core surport strut's.I want to use one of those cool anvil auto closeout's so laid the 3/8 rod end's on top of the core surport w/some cone bushing's I had. I will DA the alum. then have it powder coated before instllation.I stoped off at the bone yard last week and found a 3.5 alum. drive shaft out of a 2004 crown vic. cop car ($15.00). Shortened it 5in. and bang it fell right in place. Advanced Auto had some crossover ujoint's ($9.90ea.) that helped it fit my T56 slip yoke & 1310 9in. ford pinion yoke (Labor to shorten priceless).I am going to scotch brite the shaft and leave the painted police decal on it then clearcoat. Now all I need are some, cop shock's & cop brake's and I'm ready to roll.

Ron in SoCal 10-10-2010 06:39 PM

So cool Scott. Not only (normal) awesome stuff that comes out of your shop, but now vintage parts melded in. I love the look of the radiator cover and fender braces too. Keep going man...

coolwelder62 10-10-2010 06:56 PM

Thank's Ron.

My son Brandon is doing the posting for me. The posting side of my brain is dead/mush.I just happy that we get any photo's posted at all.Brandon's 14 and just got his farm driver's permit, and now want a set of wheel's, so we wont go look at anything until he learn's how to make them bigger.

tones2SS 10-11-2010 08:01 AM

Nice work on the car. Looks really good.

Track Junky 10-11-2010 08:21 AM

Looking great Scott. You are making good progress.

Matt@BOS 10-11-2010 12:29 PM

Scott, I'm sure you've been asked a million times, but I've never read what you did to fit a 315 tire up front. Care to divulge your secrets? :unibrow:

Matt

Matt

Matt my subframe rail's are only 32inches outside to outside. My frt wheels are 18x11's (12inches over all) with 7.375 back space.I have the camber set at 3Degrees-neg.mainly for contact patch during track day's.W/the camber set 1.5 degees -neg. they slightly rub the very outer edge of the iner wheel house. I used a hammer and dolley to work the outer edge up &out giving me a little more clearance. But I had to have it bolted to the fender so as was hammering on it would stay. Then I took it apart and used the planishing hammer to smooth it all out so no one could tell what I did unless they look real hard.W/7.375 backspace the inside of the wheels will just barely rub so smoothed the back side of the lower a arm about an 1/8 inch.Under super hard braking w/that much back spacing the inside of the tire will rub on the top inside of the iner fender just under the hood hinge.I know this because after and real fast track day the paint had been rubed off.At lock to lock the tires are about 1/4 inch for outside of the frame rails. The 315's will track alover the road, those slight groves is what those big tires follow. But they really look bad a$$.Thanks for asking Matt.I hope your camaro comes back togather better than before.Scott.

AALynch 10-11-2010 06:31 PM

Scott, the car looks great! I've got all my suspension stuff beadblasted and painted, we need to make another trip out to you sometime soon to talk over this subframe with you once more. Things have been really crazy since Carlisle, and I've been telling myself I need to finish fabbing my center console before I tear into something else...

Keep it up!
-Adam

coolwelder62 10-11-2010 06:45 PM
