OUSCI well.... update Mark Stielow wins Optima!

Lets see some results !!!!

Who won? I hear a tough field and most finished, lets hear I'm dying here with no news?

camcojb 11-06-2010 10:28 PM

Mark Stielow won the event. They did not list places beyond that, maybe they'll have a list of total standings soon.

Congrats to Mark, drove the wheels off the car, even won the autocross section, and those that know him know how much he loves that!

Awesome. Congrats to Mark

Vegas69 11-06-2010 10:33 PM

Mark had an amazing showing. All his experience in building cars, racing, and tuning really paid off today. I'm just glad one of the family took home the title. I'll be making some changes and hoping to close the gap. I'll be posting a nice thread soon.

It was kinda weird seeing Stielow's new car run in person... it is so smooth and sorta uneventful with all due respect. It doesn't even look like it's trying compared to all the others trying so hard. It's not loud, it's not flashy, but it's awesome in its own way. That to me is the beauty of that car. Pretty much total domination.

coolwelder62 11-07-2010 05:47 AM

That'a great.Congrat's Mark.Your are truely the godfather of Protouring. And congrat's to all the contestant's I hope is was a geat showing. And Thank you Jimi Day for bringing something like to life.

Thats when you have to be worried, the guy not making all the noise is usually the one to beat!

GregWeld 11-07-2010 09:43 AM

Personally -- I worked the timing booth for every car in Auto X and the Stop Challenge. With the "parade laps" which turned into practice laps that was some 400 runs! Since I never looked up from the paperwork I had to do I didn't see a single thing.... (Yeah right! LOL)

Great event guys! Good to see everyone again and rib some and slap some others. Found a new adopted son... he has a disease which causes his hair to have a blueish spotting but I'm told he may grow out of it. :D

I was going to give him one of those plastic bong things the drunks carry around town down there.... Figured that would be a real "keeper". :D

Rybar 11-07-2010 10:32 AM

That's awesome, Congrats Mark!! So I guess he topped Finch and Mary at at the Auto-x??

What about Steve Rupp, CarlC and Todd how did they do??

How about last years winner with the Cobra??

Vegas69 11-07-2010 10:38 AM

I don't have the results but I should be top ten on the road course which really surprised me. I didn't do so well in the autocross or speed stop challenge. I'll be posting some video and photos later today. Had a killer time.

Mary wasn't running the event this year.... and yes - since Mark WON the X - he topped EVERYBODY else...

The big LS9 hybrid and the ABS assisted carbon fiber brakes also did the trick in the stop challenge. Mark just built himself one heck of a car... it was untouchable. Of course - his "thumb drive":D doesn't hurt either!

Steve seems to be still sorting out his new engine and suspension changes - but man his car sure hooked up in the stop challenge! It was the other end of things that didn't go as planned (the stopping part!).

Bruce Cambern (Last years Cobra owner/winner) brought a GT40 this year - and drove it himself this time around. He was unhappy with the road course handling of the car... but was smoking fast in the stop challenge (.02 seperated the top 5 cars at one point)..

Carl C and Todd will have a big duke out posting on here I'm sure -- but lets just say CC was "da main event".

Absolutely! I just prefer really loud noises, that's all. :D

Telly your gold 'Bird was sweet, man. Great car.

Just because someone gave you a yellow shirt, Greg, doesn't mean you worked.

Nice finally meeting you in the flesh, Greggers.

57hemicuda 11-07-2010 11:30 AM

I figured once Mark got his car sorted, combined with his experience behind the wheel would make him unstoppable. I also figured Rupp's car couldn't possibly be sorted by raceday. Can't wait for the rest of the results, and some pics. Ron

We had an awesome time together! There's no way not to have a good time at an event like this as long as you don't hurt the car, yourself, and do the best you can. Nobody wants to see carnage at events/track days like this.

Tom took some pics of the final scoreboard. Hopefully he sends them to me soon and we'll get it posted up.

And yeah, there's a pretty funny duking-it-out posting coming soon from the Iceman.

Congrats to Mark on winning the event, that Camaro is sweet. Congrats to everyone who was able to participate and enjoy themselves, that says alot as well. My hat is off to you guys!

awr68 11-07-2010 12:49 PM

Congrats Mark! It sure was fun watching you and all the others run!

ironworks 11-07-2010 12:58 PM

Mark's car was super fast and smooth. He would go much deeper into turn one then anybody else. Plus when he let off the gas flames shoot out the tail pipes like a C6R. Congrats Mark, you looked good on the track. Almost make it look easy.

Flying Home

Well I had an unbelievable SEMA. I got in on Monday and met up with Charley at the airport and mooched a ride to meet the transport guy. We gathered up my car and drove it into SEMA to the Optima Booth. The car was getting a lot of attention for being “another red ’69 Camaro with a small block Chevy”. Charley and I cruised the show and hung out with his car at Mother’s Wax or at my car in the Optima booth.

Wednesday, my folks showed up to see the car and the show. I was having lunch with them when Cam Evans called and said “Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi is at your, car get over here”! I got my folks in the show and headed for the Optima booth. When I got there it was a mob of cameras and Sony people. I got to speak directly to Kazunori Yamauchi about my car. He sat in it and played with the controls. Wednesday night, we went to the Hard Rock Café for the awards ceremony. I was in the final 7 cars for the car that would be put into the game. When they called my name I was blown away. The next day I had all kinds of crazy interviews with “gaming type” people.

Friday, we were trying to sort out how we were going to get out of the building to get to Pahrump. About 3:55 all my buddies showed up and we pushed my car to the door followed by the Ring Brothers’ Mustang. When the show ended at 4:00 we were the first car out the door.

We drove over to the Optima meeting point for a group picture. We then had to double back to Vegas to get some road rally shots for the OUSCI. We opted not to seek the extra points for finding Elvis so we could keep moving! Once we were on the road to Pahrump we could relax. Saturday we were up bright and early and off to Spring Mountain Ranch for the OUSCI.

Because all I had was my car and the junk in the trunk, DSE let me park my car at their rig. Thanks for the help! We ran the road course in the morning and got the best time of a 1:48. I think I was a second a lap faster than last year when we had DOT slicks vs the 220 tread wear tires I had this year. The car worked good with the exception of the ABS faulting out and the trans balking on the 2-3 shift twice.

I was able to clear the trouble code in the ABS and get it working again prior to the next event, the AutoX. Due to me not paying attention, I was unable to pre-walk the course. Jeff Smith gave me some tips prior to me going out. I was shocked that I turned in the fast time of the day. I guess all those trips to Wal-Mart paid off. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean you can’t be good at it.

Next up was the Speed Stop Challenge. I waited until enough people made some passes to get some dust blown off and some rubber down before I made my pass. I did not find out I set the fastest time until the awards.

The final tally was:

Road Course 2nd
AutoX 1st
Speed Stop 1st
Over all 1st

I was very happy we had a great day. I could not have done it without the help of all my friends and family who were able to come out. My Mom and Dad got to see the whole event and were happy to see us do well. Also I had a ton of friends at the track to help out (I know I broke the 2 people rule). A lot of people came a long way to help me do well and many also helped me with the car back home. I really appreciate all the help and support.

I had a amazing week at SEMA. As Dr. Charles Lillard, Laura, and I were driving back to the airport this morning, I reflected back over the events and I don’t know how it could have gone any better.

Congratulations Mark. You are very deserving of the win. Having your parents there to share it with you must make it a double-proud moment.

Flash68 11-07-2010 02:30 PM

Congrats Mark. It was great to see you drive it in person. Very deserving of the win and you make it look so damn easy, which we all know it is not!

Stuart Adams 11-07-2010 02:51 PM

Congrats Mark. You made it look easy. The actual times will put in perspective how you dominated.

Want to thank Cam and Jimi for putting on a great event.

I found this on U-tube. It was my fastest run on the speed stop challange.

Not a lot of dramma with the ABS. :_paranoid

Mark, congrats on a well deserved win. It was great to see you/your car in action at OUSCI.

Sorry for the big paw prints I left on your rear bumper, lol! I was the big guy pushing your ride out of the SEMA event (along with Stuart and Jody).

Second on the road course? Who the heck ran faster than you? That Radical looked like he couldn't catch you and I didn't see him have that problem with anyone else.:hail:

Moose 11-08-2010 02:34 PM

I know it sounds like I'm kissing ass, but damn does mark's car and a lot of the other cars here motivate me to build a better car.

believe it was a late model Vette with a big wing. He claimed he was slowed by another car on the track so they let him run again and he just nipped Marks time.

Congrats Mark! Wish I could have been there to see it!

OUSCI Road course. On the out lap I'm heating my tires. I'm glad they the cones don't count on the track.

The AutoX. I have 3.25 gear so I did he whole lap in 1st gear. Thats what 800 ft*lbs can do for you.

I would like to thank Ryan Zwicker for the Go-Pro Videos
