HID Headlights
Can anyone recommend a HID headlightkit for a 1965 mustang. Are they any good? When I first looked into this in 2004 there was like one manufacturer and it cost $1,500. Now they are like $100?? Any good? My halogens are terrible even with the 'best' bulbs. Looking to switch the taillights to leds too.
thanks for any help. |
your best bet is to get the H4 conversion housings, then run a 100 watt H4 bulb setup with relays. They will be way bright enough. The drop in HID kits are generally reserved for Honda civics with body kits lol.. they are mostly for looking cool, but standard headlight housings are not designed for HID bulbs. You usually get a crappy beam pattern and angry oncoming traffic.. The other option is to retrofit OEM projectors designed for HID into the H4 7" housing. Basically you would cut out the back of the housing and custom mount the whole projection unit to the back of it. You can use Google to search if you don't know what I mean. I have done alot of headlight research in the past. I had German only headlights in a VW I had and I converted them to OEM HID projectors. It's kinda fun to do actually, and also there is a reason OEM HID stuff is $1000 and ebay has it for $99. You want good quality ballast and bulbs or they burn out and or look like crap, left and right color wont match, that sort of thing...

If you are considering HID headlights in a classic car, I'd read this thread over at Pro-touring.com before you pull the trigger:
Halogen/HID FACTS!! http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/sho...&highlight=HID |
I've yet to see a single proper HID conversion in a build except twist machine.
You need actual projectors.. |
That post I linked is actually written by the owner of Twist Machine.

Hid
Awesome. thanks guys. I figured there had to be a reason no one had them. Seems like a good opportunity for a good quality premium kit for teh g-machine community.

Hid conversion
I have installed a wonderful kit compiled of two manufactuers. Xenon vision HID and Hella lenses. They are on a 69 camaro that was featured in November Chevy Hi. Guessing around 350-400 bucks for both pieces.

Those crystal headlights put out a HORRIBLE beam. I tried them on my mini. http://lh5.ggpht.com/__OT3YJ9o9Ao/S3...0/IMG_5085.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/__OT3YJ9o9Ao/S3...0/IMG_5086.JPG My suggestion is to buy some Hella E-Codes. Amazing headlights for classic cars |

hey guys, I just picked up a set of these from my friend who is the owner of the company. They are a good alternative to the ebay kits or the $1500 hellas. I was lucky because he gave me a pretty good deal, and I thought it would be easier to just have the plug and play kit with the pretty trick cut off design than to deal with retrofitting. I'm not far along enough in my camaro restoration to install them but here's some pics from the website. www.trueprojectorheadlights.com
Oh, and there's two styles, but personally, I liked the look of the classic ones more. |

What about the Fesler or DSE options? Anybody using them? Thoughts...

Yea, the cutoff design was intriguing to me. It has a flap that cuts off the beam and makes it completely level. When you switch to high beams the flap flips up and allows the whole beam to be exposed. I thought it a pretty simple/ingenious design with fewer needed parts.
The car in the lighting pic is the owners 280Z. There's pics of it on the website but he has the moderns, with the black projector housing, installed. He said the classics have the exact same light spread though. He just recently got ahold of the classic styles so I think I was one of the first to get them. Unfortunately I haven't seen any installed pics of them. My father has a pretty clean 65 mustang and it it takes the same 7 inch round design. He wants to get a set since he saw mine. I'll probably install them for him so I'll take pics and post. It might be a few weeks though since the car is in the shop right now. Here's a couple pics from the website of the modern housing design installed on his car and a 240Z: |

(415) 493 8236 Email is definitely the best way to reach him, but the phone should work. I was talking to him about some interest on this forum and he said he could do a group buy of at least 5 people for 325 each set. Let me know if you are interested! |
Just an update

So over the holidays I met up with my buddy to pick up my headlights and he asked if I wanted to help install them in his 81 Porsche. I was interested in the install process and I took phone pics so I could post them up here. We hit a speedbump because the headlight setup is somewhat odd in the german car. (I'm happy I have a camaro). But with some tinkering we got it to work. He has since acquired extensions and 55w ballasts, an optional upgrade from the 35w, to make the kit more universal. I think they look pretty good, it just made me a little more excited to work on my car. I just have to find the money/time.
Here's the pics(sorry, the weather was pretty bad): |

HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL that is one of my favorite shows. its the name of my 65 fastback. even has the chess piece logo airbrushed on the intake manifold Anyway, those classic kits look pretty good mxer788, I would be interested at $325. I assume they will fit a 65 Mustang. standard 7" lights  |
I was actually trying to research this same topic today without even seeing this post. Does anyone have any experience with this company? I plan to make some some calls this week.

What about the LED headlights - Have seen them on a few cars, but nothing in the PT world, yet.

LED Headlamps |
I thought about those for one of my projects, but decided against it. I guess $300 a pair isn't all that terrible, but not that cheap either.

LED's are probably the future, but I don't think the prices are low enough for them to gain popularity yet. |
hid/led
cool. didn't even know led's were an option. Are Audi headlights led or hid?

I know escalades have an options for LED headlights as well. I actually just purchased a set of the classic headlights from Ben. So far everything looks great. I installed one on the chevelle and have yet to find time to finish the install. Most likely this weekend. I'll post pics and an update when I'm don.

What happened to their site? Are they gone!
