LS2 build input - CAM/Heads
Alright, I'm stuck and would appreciate some input!!...
I've read a ton, talked with many, and am now looking for real world input and experience. So here's the deal: I have a mildly used 2008 LS2 from a Trailblazer SS (6700 miles). I plan to convert to a car accessory pully system in order to run a LS6 intake, Scoggin Dicky L92 CNC .650 heads, big CAM, LT Headers, 3.71 rear, 6 spd manual in a 63 Nova (2600lb car), etc. My Requirements: 1. I want to build as much power possible but keep it streetable, ~2000 rpm power band start 2. No vacuum or other issues from the CAM being too big 3. Must have good lumpy sound (of course) I'm looking at a couple differnt Scoggin Dickey CAMS (or other equivalant) SS4 LSX Super Stick Camshaft 248/262 .614/.596 113 SS3 LSX Super Stick Camshaft 240/254 .609/.595 112 SS2 LSX Super Stick Camshaft 238/247 .640/.610 114 ST4 LS3/L92 Street Thumper 232/246 .595/.614 115 Is anyone running something similar in a LS motor? What kind of power are you putting up? How is drivability? Is there another reason I should go big (valve train, etc.) Any input would be great!! |
You cant run a ls6 intake with l92 heads....LS6=Cathedral ports....L92=oval. Go to LS1-tech and read up on the cams,lots of sound clips on here to listen to.

all those cams are to big and power will not start until after 3000 rpm. I would look at texas speed for suggestions. Just an opinion for more overall power.

How do you plan to use the car, and what are your HP goals? What suspension setup will you be running, especially in the rear? Mini tubbed? Don't want to overbuild the motor for the car. Sounds like sweet build you have planned.

Good point on the LS6 intake. Now that you mention it I do believe I have that in the back of my mind somewhere. The car will be a hot street car, Pro Touring build, and is getting a full tube chassis and C5 drivetrain w/IRS. My HP goals... 1000+ would be fun!!! But I'm thinking ~500-600 with decent low end TQ. I stumbled across a Popular Hotrodding article after I posted this, and they did a good build and ended up building 572HP @ 6500 RPM, and 504TQ @ 5100RPM... that's about what I'm looking for!! By the way, TQ came on at 434ft.lbs at 3000RPM!!! Cathederal Head options
Okay... slept on it, and then woke up thinking... What can I do with the stock LS2 Heads?
Can I achieve some reasonable HP/TQ numbers and not have to go the L92 head upgrade route? That would save some dollars (that obviously just get spent somewhere else on the car!!!...:D ) Does anyone have any good Cathederal head setups? What CAM did you run? What Head/Drivetrain upgrades did you have to do? What HP/TQ numbers did you end up with? Any imput would be great! |
Realistically with stock heads and and LS6 intake , good cam you could probably get around 425 HP to the wheels and somewhere near the same TQ . However add a 76mm turbo and you could make 600 to the wheels easy.

Ya, no kidding... and the STS turbo setup probably isn't much more than the full L92 setup by the time your done.
Anyone running a turbo on LS2 Cathederal Port heads, and if so what did you have to do to them?? |
You should get in touch with EPS they can custom grind you a cam for about the same money as an off the shelf unit. They are good and have cams in some of the fastest LSX motors in the US. Engine Power Systems www.engpwrsys.com

ive had great experience with total engine airflow.. but in all honesty id upgrade to large port heads... a pair of TEA stage 2 l92 heads and a stock ls7 intake will put you well in to the 600+ HP range with a streetable 230 deg XFI lobe cam, victor ir vic jr intake can add another 50 Hp on the right combo.. check ls1tech.com

I spent the $25 to have Pat G (you can google him) design a custom cam with the EPS lobes for me. I'm combining that with AFR heads with a goal of good drivability with decent low and midrange torque. In my case I am not focused on peak dyno horsepower since the car will be largely street driven.

Then over time a User could sort of pick what they were looking for as far as end result and then copy the build... I just called Texas Speed this week and would suggest you do the same.
I am planning on installing the same setup LS2/4L70E out of a Trailblazer. They recommended a 228R with 114 LSA with stock heads and and LS2 manifold to keep the powerband in the lower rpm range versus the upper if you go with the L92/Ls3 heads. With good headers, ls2 car intake, good tune and the recommended cam you should get you over 500hp. This cam is mild so a bigger would yield better results.
