How to incorporate a push to start button?
 
Id like to find some way to not have my keys wagging back and forth across my dash ('68 Camaro). I dig the idea of an ignition switch in a cubby in the console and a push to start button (ala Honda S2000 or Lexus) in place of the ignition switch on the dash.

Anyone done anything like this?
Have suggestions?
Have a schematic?

I plan on doing this with a S2000 starter, I have no information on it yet however.

Shay Campbell’s old car has a s2000 push button. I believe I remember him saying it was rather expensive to do. He also said you cant get the pig tail from the dealer you will need to get it from a salvage yard and he had to get the wiring schematics from a Honda dealer. I believe he put the ignition switch in the lighter position in the ashtray.

You can do it with a push botton of any kind and a $3 relay..............don't spend huge money on it.

I'll be the first to admit that I am electricly challenged. Would it be possible through the use of a latching relay to have it push to start and push to stop using the same button?

Yep, however use the latching relay to trigger other relays as the latching ones aren't that heavy duty and will burn out if you pass that much current threw them. Use them to triger Bosch or Potter 40 amp relays.

Did anyone ever come up with a schematic or wiring diagram for a chevy? I had one from a miata and it wasn't very helpful...

we are building a new botton to mount on the dash but we are trying incorprate a no & off switch if you can wait about six week we should have it ready for sale with instruction to hook it up. :yes: :thumbsup:

I was thinking of a different way to do this so that it would work more like a 2005 Vette where no metal key is required at all.

My thinking is to work with the existing switch and wiring for reliability and ease of service.

Since my 69 Vette does not have a dash mount switch (68 would), I thought of the following.

Installing a Linear actuator (www.uslinear.com) on the steering column set up to push the ignition switch forward to the run position when you activate it with the keyless entry remote (option 1). Once this is activated the car is ready to start. I would run the START ENGINE button in the steering column mounted flush in the stock metal key ignition switch lock housing. It will still be wired through the alarm and neutral saftey clutch switch. In other words you would have to be in the car holding the clutch to start.

To turn the car off I would activate the Option 1 button on the keyless fob. This would trip the relay and cause the linear actuator to move back releasing the ignition switch on the column.

Because it would be tied to the alarm, simply breaking the actuator out and manual moving the column switch forward would not allow the fuel pump and ECM to go active so the car might spin over, but not start.

Still hammering this out in my head, but I think it will work.

Hey Guys, I got a schemetic from ls1camaro.net, in the section fourm

it shows a relay and diagram for the S2000 switch and a cheap place to find the pigtail,

on the P/T board awhile ago the was athread about a aftermarket push button switch, I liked it better than the Honda part,
