Greg Weld's dirty secret!
In his signature, it says; "I have some tools... would someday like to have some skill using them... " but the truth is that he has a buttload of tools that would actually make many shops jealous and he knows how to use every one of them expertly! He's even a great welder and can weld aluminum and steel like nobody's business. He even repaired a very thin-wall lug key of mine with his welder that looked like it was fixed by a jeweler.
I've had the privilege of hanging out with Greg the past few months because the new LS2 in the Buick broke a valvespring and was stranded at another Lat-g member's house for a day so when Greg found this out, he just hitched up his trailer and came down to drag it home to the dream shop and said "there is no schedule, rush, thrash or timeline, we'll get to it when we feel like it and take our sweet time doing it right" which was a huge relief that has been almost therapeutic and made the kick in the teeth of the failed valvespring such a non-issue that was purely a blessing in disguise. Since it failed right at the end of Summer and my machinist wanted to go through the motor to make sure nothing happened on the bottom end, we just took our sweet time working on it a day here and a day there when we weren't tied up with life, travel, family and business and it was a lot of fun. Greg is so thorough and meticulous that he would see something that was overlooked in the motor-swap thrash or an aftermarket part that wasn't holding up like he thought it should and he would just announce that was our project on this day or that and we'd make it right. No bolt went into anything without getting Loctite or anti-seize and then torqued with the beeping electronic torque wrench to factory specs. There were also explicit instructions to leave ALL tools on the cart and not to put them away "because you'll misplace them and lose them forever and screw up my whole system!" We had a great time through it all and Greg is good company and good people and I learned a great deal during the process. He is a true example of the kind of people that reside at this forum and I'm glad to call him my friend. I drove the car home on Friday and it was even better than before. I look forward to a few more dry winter days to get out with it and fully intend to flog it all Spring and Summer this coming year with all the bugs completely worked out because it's ready so far in advance of the break in the NW weather. Thanks for everything, Greg |
Cool, sounds like Greg is a great guy.
Greg, What do you do that you have all this free time to play with tools! |
sounds a bit like a lil bromance going on here....
J/K its grat to hear stories like this, so often these people are overlooked and in reality they are the foundation of the hobby! |
Greg is a very cool and knowledgable guy. I met him for a short few days at RTTC 1, and he treated me like a friend. Also helped a few guys "learn" how to tie a car to a trailer.

I've always enjoyed reading Greg's threads and responses.

This Greg guy sound like a nice guy. Oh Greg by the way have you ever thought of building a shed on the east coas????? I could start looking for some property close to my house. Uh you know to keep an eye on it when our out west. ;) Thats cool Greg way to go. |
Cool story!
Greg is a helpful, knowledgeable car guy. |
Can't believe it took this long for a Greg thread to start. Def a great man and a blast to be around. Generous, hilarious, and taller than Tony---a force to be reckoned with. The most popular guy on Lat G that doesn't own a 69 Camaro.
Honestly, guys like Greg make this whole thing a blast for me. Looking forward to hanging out with him at RTTC. Hey Greg, they are allowing passengers this year--I got a helmet for you and an open passenger seat. Doug |
You are a sick bunch that's for sure....
Jason -- you were supposed to keep this little bit of work on the QT! I kept quiet on my end. Thanks guys really.... Todd has it right BTW.... the last part anyway. Although I really wish he'd have called me a "BIG PRICK"! Sadly.... <looking down, hanging head> I'm the luckiest guy - in Al's words - "ON THE PLANET" (or was it galaxy?). Just trying to pay it forward a bit. I've always said that this - or any other - hobby is not about the hobby... it's just a way to get guys together and have some fun and meet some new people. Thrashing away in the shed really just isn't nearly as much fun as watching Jason hit his head on unmovable objects (like lift arms! Gawd that had to hurt! My stomach that is.... from laughing at him). Jason just hasn't discovered that all those tools are brand new and I have no earthly idea what we just fixed or why. :D :lateral:  :woot: |

Right on, Greg. Keep doin it and pay it forward. I would if I had your talent... (self appointed spokesman for LatG) Thanks Bro...:hail: |

Ever since the master Weld set foot in my shop it hasn't been the same. Ya know Greg... Your alright in my books... No mater what anybody says |

I think the title should be dirty "LITTLE" secret. JMHO :D

Look at all of Greg's fans! Only outnumbered by his friends who love to break balls!
He won't let you buy lunch so I figured the least I could do was give him a public thank you. Ya, Greg kept the car on the QT for me but the main reason I wasn't talking about it was because I started out the process pissed off at the valvespring but like I said before, it all worked out for the best. Having the car running and driving again gave me the chance to take it to a little Cars & Coffee thing here in Tacoma at Griot's Garage which is an amazing place and the special guest Saturday Morning was Peter Brock who had his own personal Daytona Prototype Replica with an LS7 and his own Datsun 510 with an efi injected small block Chevy in it and told his biography to the crowd from starting at GM Design under Harley Earl to working for Carroll Shelby and designing the Daytona Coupe to having the rug pulled out from under him by Shelby snaking him out of a deal with Toyota Racing which is what lead him to start BRE with Datsun. It was great and he was an amazing speaker with an incredible story about his career arc and the best part was driving the Buick across town in the sunshine to be there. It was cold as hell but it was sunny! |
I heart GW.
Seriously tho, Greg is one of the true good guys out there no doubt. It was great hanging with you Greg in Vegas and at Optima! |
In a world that's so negative, with all the bitching and complaining, it's nice to know that people can still be kind and say good things.
Greg is definitely one of the good guys. |
  I always knew Greg was full of SH^T !!!! Thats why I love him:_paranoid
