RPM Hot Rods Presents Project Triple Nickel 69 Camaro Convertible

Been a while since I add any builds and we have a few really cool ones going so here goes...

A customer called us wanting to build a 69 Camaro Convertible that was set up similar to our shop car... He did not have a car to start with so the search began.. About 2 hours later a nice driver was found and on its way to the shop! Once the car arrived it was quickly disassembled, soda blasted and the cutting began. At one point in the Camaros life somebody had replaced all of the sheet metal but the floors were another story. The best way to repair the floors were to completely cut them out from the firewall back to the tail panel and replace with a complete pan. Once the pan was in place we took a ride to see our friends at Detroit Speed and picked up just about every suspension piece they offered for the car...

After discussions with our customer it was decided the car would receive a fuel injected Pat Musi 555 making 675HP, Tremec Magnum six speed, and Baer six piston calipers with 14" rotors front and rear. The body would receive many subtle mods and he wanted the car silver with a red gut.

We called Gary Ragle and told him our thoughts for the build. A few renderings later and the build was quickly underway.

Here are some pictures with the floors cut out, floors going in, DSE Mini Tubs installed, DSE Subframe mocked in place and the insides of the rear wheel wells. We built the wheel lip all the way to the inside of the tub.. This is an area that often gets overlooked but drives us crazy when left unfinished! :willy:

We cut and tucked the front and rear bumpers. In the rear we recessed the bumper by making a pocket for the bumper to sit in across the tail panel and in to the sides of quarter panels for a clean tight fit. We then reworked the lower valance and made a recessed area for the license plate to mount.

The front we removed the license plate area and carried the lower line all the way across and fabricated new brackets to pull the bumper tighter to the fenders and grill.

Curt didn't like the bulky look of the factory spoiler so Josh fabricated a much more low profile sleeker sheet metal rear spoiler. Moving to the front we couldn't leave it stock so we fabricated a one off lower valance and sheet metal spoiler that extends over the the lower corners of the fenders. We also made the front fenders one piece by welding the front lower dog leg to the fender for a cleaner look.

Wow - - Looks great!

I like the lower valence.

Man - I am ready for Car Show season again. Well not really I need to get some stuff done, but I can't wait to see what everyone has been working on.

Keep up the good work. Tell Josh, the metal work is fantastic as usual.

You guys do great work! So many questions....I'll start with - how did you find a suitable donor (very clean, btw) in a couple of hours? Second - how long have you guys had this in the shop?

More pics please...

The rear lower valance also received a little work more recessing the areas leading up the exhaust openings. Obviously we will make exhaust tips the same shape as the opening. We also filled the channel that runs across the rear boot area and ground it smooth eliminating the trim

Thanks for the compliments... I actually found the car on Ebay... We bought the car sight unseen :_paranoid and got pretty lucky...

We disassembled the car in the beginning of September and took it to the blaster. It was back and we started on the car the first week of October.. More pics coming!

Our customer also wanted to eliminate the stock side louvers and wanted more of a modern super car scoop. We cut the louvers out, filled the hole and smoothed the area then cut the scoop in place. We also filled the factory seam for a cleaner overall look.

With the car being a convertible the dash is a major focal point of the build. We went back to the drawing board and drew up a few ideas. Here is what was chosen and the fab work is well under way!

your metal fab guy is terrific i agree with most on the post great work i always like to see build pics its great inspiration I think Chip Foose said it best recently. Never before have you seen the kind of metal fab work on cars that are being built right now some of the best and most creative metal masters are building hot rods and forging new ground . thats a great and true statement from him and your car is defined in that statement keep the pics coming
