HPI Customs "ProRod" : 1940 Plymouth (Pro Touring meets Street Rod?)
Here is another HPI project. Don't really have a name for it, but I guess it could be a merging between Street Rodding and Pro Touring? I tend to think street rods are generally unusable or too over the top that you loose some comfort and functionallity, but we wanted to do something different on this car.
Our customer also wanted to keep the patina "for now" ( as the project went on he started to regret it, and it looks like when we are finished he will drive it for a summer and then we are tearing it down for paint) I hate rat rods, but theres nothing ratty about this car. The car is super minty for the age, considering it didnt come from a dry state like Cali. Notice no real fender dents etc... On original 6 volt flathead 6 cylinder it drove to Back to the 50s weekend twice (8 hours each way) and the story goes on and on. Our client bought it from his friend, and promised not to paint it. The basic list is as follows: 2008 5.7 HEMI 525 auto trans 8 3/4 Mopar rear end Kore3 Brakes Air ride Shockwaves MustangII with some geometry tweaks triangulated 4 link (done on computer program, not just put where it fits!) The frame was modified on our frame table. From the front clip to the narrowed rear frame and suspension design.

Rear suspension install. Triangulated 4 link, with all the suspension points plotted in a program to "theoretically" give us a decent roll center and traction. I'm not an engineer, but the numbers are ok.

Those hemis are huge! Had to do a 6 inch setback, BUT the plymouths had a larger interior compartment that the dodges, and our client is shorter so its ok. Its real patina all right! :yes: The only fake patina on it is around our body mods and repair, to try and hide it!!!!
I dont know, when I post some pics of all the front end components in the engine bay in original green, it looks pretty slick. I am torn right now, don't know which way I would go. |

Here is the process of the dash modifications. The gauge cluster will be anodized black, column is dash color with black accessories. Glovebox door is a push-to-latch catch, so it has no knobs. Under the dash is the stereo, ac unit, ecu, fuse panel(s) modules etc, accuair computer, compressor relays, electric wipers, and more.

Heres the chassis going together. You can see the modifided Ricks tank, Air ride compressors and tank under the floor, all wiring and plumbing on top of the frame so you cant see it when its assembled, etc.

We like to put a removable mounting bar under our dashes. We mount everything electronic to it and have connectors so that we can wire it out of the car and put it in, and remove it if we have to. Nothing is wired so that you would have to cut anything to remove any one component.
We have two main weatherpaks on either side of the firewall. All the left side wiring exits on the left, and the right on the right. This way, NO wires cross over on the car at all. This means you can hide all the wiring easy with no wires running accross the chassis or floor. I really like this. Nice to see that it's a Hemi. I'm in the middle of designing my rear suspension and I have a question about the set up you have. It appears that when at ride height the upper front mount will be above the upper mount on the housing. Is that the case ? How did you determine where the mounts would be positioned on the frame ?

Actually, at ride height the lower bars are parrallell to ground and parallell to the chassis centerline. The upper links angle down towards the front of the car to give us our intersect/instant center (angle determined by suspension calculator)
So the frame mounts of the upper triangulated links are lower than the diff bracket mounts. The bars are actually less than 60 degrees triangulated too. We tried to give less angle for less bind (due to the air ride sweep) without sacrificing lateral control. Everything seems to work on the computer, and it works well throughout the air ride sweep when assembled. I always find air ride cars are a bit of a sacrifice to geometry. The length on our upper bars are just shy of 75 percent of our lower links. We had to make the lower bars a bit longer so we could put the frame mount in a suitable place. In this case it was all about working around the chassis, unlike some builds were whe can build the chassis around suspension. Hope it helps. Finally got back on this project. All systems are go as far as electrical goes. Dash is done, gauges finished, motor ready to fire, vintage air done, Accuair programmed and functional, steering hooked up and done, brakes bled, etc. Just needs a console and door panels, carpet, and back seat and glass

I know folks say the whole patina thing has been beat to death, overplayed, whatever, but that thing looks soooo sweet all weathered out with a glimmer of the new underneath. When done right, it's timeless. :thumbsup:

Well guys and gals, unfortunately we are finished with this project at this time. This becomes one of those projects that we as a shop will never get to see finished, let alone find out what it will even sound like.
Unfortunately I cannot go into details. We will never see our vision come to fruition on this one, and I am afraid that all our hard work and extra effort will go entirely unnoticed on this one, short of all the kind comments we have recieved from all the members of Lateral-g! We figured that since we would not be able to finish this one, we would have a little photo shoot and post some pics for all to enjoy! |
