Tenacity @ EBMC
Well figured its about time to start a thread on our 69 Camaro with AME Max g chassis weve been commisioned to build. Some of you who have been to the shop have heard the story about it and seen the car, for those who have not, it started when we got a call about a Camaro that was started at another "shop". It had been there for 5 years and progress was not happening fast enough. I was told it had an Art morrison Max G chassis an all aluminum 632 w/electronic fuel injection, 4L80E trans and needed to be finished. I had them come down with it on a trailer to check out and to figure out what was left to do. Well none of us were prepared for the mess that this "shop" had assembled. The extremely poor workmanship was evident everywhere, from the crooked misaligned quarterpanels with the flux cored mig welds to the 1/2 " gaps in rollcage fitment (the list goes on and on) Then the biggest surprise was when looking at the engine, it was wrapped in layers of plastic sitting in the car with a motorplate we first noticed the old hilborn mechanical injection manifold under the plastic and knew something wasn't right. We cut the wrapping away and found that it was a plastic mock up engine painted and disguised to look like the real thing! right down to the taped up exhaust ports to "keep the dirt out".I had to inform them that their $17,000 engine was a hunk of plastic and the trans was a gutted case as well. They had seen this engine and trans wrapped in plastic for three years and assumed it was what they paid for. I could go on forever about all the extremely poor workmanship and other useless parts such as bent coilovers and completely wrong size wheels and tires but at this point you get the idea.
notice the "all aluminum 632" and "custom firewall" http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/001.jpg before we replaced side and upper cowls (they were completely hacked up with blowtorch) http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/015.jpg Let the rebirth begin! A ton of work is needed just to bring it back to an acceptable foundation to start upon. http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0112.jpg These pics were taken about 6 months ago and currently were full steam ahead on this project and it will feature extensive body mods such as 3"extended rockers, flush glass, shaved drip rails custom rear spoiler, ect. (alot has already been done) but still keeping the 69 theme, a Mast black label 416 LS3 with sheetmetal intake, T56 Magnum 6 spd, Winters quick change rear, 20 x12 and 19x10 Forgelines and a ton of one offs to name a few. I have a few more pics on my other computer showing the original "handiwork" that I'll post Monday. |
I remember talking to you about this Steve... oh the horror for the owner!
Glad it's on track and sounds like a great build and parts list. |

The guy was basically a crook. I think he was full aware he couldn't do a job like this and saw it as an oppurtunity to make some money with no intention of actually finishing anything. Its what gives this great hobby a bad name sometimes, (although this is to the extreme!) The owner of the car encouraged me to tell this story to remind people to do their homework and check references! |
First order of business is building a sound foundation to build upon.
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/02281.jpg All this mess will be rebuilt, both quarters replaced, C-pillars were crooked and will need to be repaired also. We'll be building our own tubs as well to fit 335 -20" tire http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/02288.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/02250.jpg |

Much respect to the car owner for having the courage to press on! :hail:

We extended rockers about 3"
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0291.jpg rocker to fender jamb capped off http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/02134.jpg Tapered down quarterpanels to better transition into extended rocker http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0286.jpg |
Rear spoiler fabrication, we wanted something subtle.

It's coming along nicely Steve, great fab work.
|
Spoiler looks super sick.
Good to hear that the owner of that car found a good shop to take care of him. |
Good job guys. I'm digging that rear spoiler.
|
Thanks everyone!
|
Wow, Nice job.
|
Very nice work, What gauge metal are you using for the floor and the spoiler? I have a full frame on my 67 and am doing away with the aluminum floor and doing metal.

Weve been crazy busy lately and haven't had much time to post new pics, but our Mast Black label 416 LS3 is mounted up
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0265.jpg Headers built.... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/008.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/022-2.jpg Motor mounts built..... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/014.jpg Oh yeah and we dropped the whole center of the frame down (possible due to dropping rockers 3") to give some headroom and a much more ergonomic driving position...... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/005.jpg Trans mount....... http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/006.jpg the rack mounts were rotated to provide clearance for power steering pump.We also dropped the crossmember for crank pulley clearance. http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/021-2.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ring/022-1.jpg |

The engine dynoed at 640 HP and 560 TRQ |
Shaved dripped rails. A pillars were also widened to cover weatherstrip channel.
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/038.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/040.jpg Rear suspension needed all brackets removed and rewelded to housing due to previous shops work (all brackets misaligned and crooked). A new shock crossmember was fabbed, TSM watts linkage, and modified sway bar brackets http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0256.jpg |
3" exhaust system run to rear crossmember
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ouring/063.jpg heat shields fabbed will be attached between floor and exhaust http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...ing/0026-2.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0133.jpg partial floor and tunnel fab. tunnel will be removable. http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0342.jpg upper column mount http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0443.jpg http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/a...uring/0122.jpg |
That looks killer. Great updates.
|
Love the suspension work!
|
This thing is looking killer, I'm sure the owner is stoked seeing all the progress.
|
The owner of the car is very tall, but by removing the whole center of frame section and dropping down, we were able to get a very ergonomic seating position and steering/pedal placement especially considering the full frame and engine setback.
