Need a little help guys. Looking into some issues with my shock leaking and while I'm at it I may have to change my springs. What is the rate of my springs now. they say varispring 12-175? I'm thinking since I have so many amps, twin subwoofers and the control box for my trans in the trunk, I may need to get a stiffer spring.

If you can get some sort of travel indicator on the shock shaft that won't damage the seal or shock body that would help determine if the shock is bottoming and causing seal failure. Small tight fitting O-rings work well if you can get them on, clay, tinfoil, or? When you have the shocks rebuilt you could ask about having them installed. I have them on my track bikes front forks and they are very handy for dialing in compression settings and maximising travel.

If she's bottoming that's definitely a consideration or bump-stops if they're an option and you want a pluch ride. I'll assume the range of suspension travel and shock stroke are in sync? Don't forget to consider fuel at 8 lbs a gallon. :D

one more thing, Any ideas on how to hold the car up while I send these shocks in for rebuild?

It looks like you have a G-bar with heim type shock mounts top and bottom, so one way, if you want to be a roller would be welding some tubing the same eye to eye length to replicate the shock would be relatively easy. Another is jack stands or blocks under the body.

Mark Just get some 1-1/4" tube and drill 2 holes at what your shock length is and bolt those in. Its what I use for mock up. Its fairly common for the Varishocks to leak so you might want to look into the new Ridetech coilovers .... a much better design. so you dont have to have your coilovers rebuilt frequently.

G-Bars need at least a 200 pound spring. I run a 225. If you have a lot of junk in your trunk you may even need 250. The goal is to have the shock travel centered. Yours may be leaking due to frequently bottoming out with those springs.

Funny, the G-Bar came with these springs, but I did get one of the early set ups about 3 years ago. I'm going to call Chris Alston tomorrow.

Mark, sorry I haven't called you. I've been a little busy. :D Just got home from RTTC 2. You need a little more shock travel and a much stiffer spring. I'd go 225-250 on a cruiser. I just put 275's in mine and they are working great.

No worries Tod, I'll call you this week. I forgot all about RTTC. I think I'm going to make another set of shock plates as well. some how mine have a little bend in them.

I noticed that on the set I had on there for a long while. I thought it was from the tow hook leverage and towing. Let me know what you come up with.

Never had tow hooks on my car, maybe the tork of the rear?

Called Varishock today, the said I should go to a 200. I measure my shock and I'm at 7 5/8 level.

any updates on this? did the vari shocks stop leaking and what was the cause of the leak?

Yes, the rebuild fix the problem. Not sure what caused it yet.
