66 Twin Turbo Chevelle "Green Hornet"

This a project that I bought off this site about a year ago. Since then a few things have been done like new turbos, Rick's gas tank with Weldon fuel pump and filter, and turbo piping (not installed as of yet). Been trying to get my local turbo fabricator guy to fit and weld all turbo piping. Looks like I may have to take it out of town to get it done. It also needs custom headers made to accomodate the larger turbos. It has Gale Banks exhaust manifolds. Can't wait to someday drive this thing!

Nice car, love the color

Rybar 03-15-2011 12:00 AM

Thanks for posting Rick, I've wanted to know what happened of this car. You picked it up for a great deal from what I remember.

66SuperSport 03-15-2011 05:49 AM

Rick

Great to finally see some recent pictures. You just beat me to this one. When I called to buy the car you had just closed the deal earlier that day. Can't wait to see it done. Hopefully you can get it out to some of the events.

waynieZ 03-15-2011 08:17 AM

Very Nice Rick. It should be a wild ride.

manny z 03-15-2011 07:37 PM

Man, twin turbos look so dam good on an american V-8..

Rick Giles 03-15-2011 08:04 PM

Thanks for the input and compliments guys.

66SuperSport, I'm sorry I beat you to it. Were you building your 66 then?

When I bought the car my goal was to have it done by Oct. Goodguys event in Charlotte. Started a new business the middle of last year and any extra money went to the business so she has been on hold.:( Hoping to get it going by Oct this year. Once all the piping is done and everything is ready I would like to take it off the frame and do a full detail. This really is a very nice car in so many ways like NO RUST! I take that back, there is a little bit around the bottom of the rear window but you have to look real close in between the window moulding and the sheetmetal. I've only seen a few cars in my life that are in this condition. Still has the original paint in the trunk with the original jack sticker under the trunk lid.
She should make about 1200hp on pump gas with the 67mm turbos and intercoolers.
Hopefully next month 1 out of 2 possible shops will fabricate the piping and headers.

great project

XcYZ 03-16-2011 03:59 AM

Wow, great car, would love to see more.

Rick Giles 03-16-2011 06:08 PM

I want to put more up but unsure about reducing the size of pictures and then restoring them back to original size. Still learning.

NOPANTS68 03-16-2011 09:04 PM

I saw this car in storage before you bought it. It's an awesome car with some top shelf parts. Love the motor too.

Man, it sure is hard to find someone that does good fab/welding work to do the turbo piping in the Richmond area in a reasonable amount of time. Going to talk to one more guy today and if that doesn't work....does anyone want to buy the motor and turbos? Just about ready to go with a LS3 motor with a Kenne Bell... something I can do myself at home!

How far you willing to travel for the turbo fab work? What about Turbo Hoses in Livermore? I've seen their shop and work. Looks very good.

Are you in Richmond, VA? If so, check out:

Virginia Speed, Inc.
1397 Taylor Farm Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23453 757-468-5101

They do some really nice work. Check them out on LS1 tech

I'm in Richmond Va. I looked up turbo hoses and that is a great place especially for parts. Guess I'm 3000 miles from them. Virginia Speed looks like a possibilty since they are about 1 1/2 hours from me. Talked to Brett Hamilton at Hamilton Race Cars in Powhatan Va. He is well known for his fab work. He said he could take the car in in about 2 weeks and only needs 1-2 days working on it! Hope this works out. Thanks guys for your input.

Some of Rick's Tanks handy work. They do a wonderful job and Hector is great to deal with! Just don't say anything about the old ugly fittings...they are some I had laying around and have nothing to do with Rick's Tanks. They will be changed out.

waynieZ 07-18-2011 08:32 PM

That looks like a slick setup! Your right they make awesome tanks.Very nice.

How did you come about your decision for an external fuel pump over internal? Serviceability, fuel requirements?
I also have Rick's efi tank and it has no issues fueling nearly 700hp on 1/8 tank. You get what you pay for.

Rick Giles 07-23-2011 03:24 AM

I have a friend that is turbo guy and he said buy the best and buy Weldon. I called Weldon and asked them what I needed and they said use the 2025 pump if you want to make over 1000 hp. Just so happeded that I ran across a guy selling a good used one with the filter and fittings for $400. Everything bought for fuel delivery is made by Weldon including filters, regulator and electronic controller. Man it's expensive building a turbo car! I had also heard some stories about the internal pumps giving problems. Don't know if there is any truth to that but it sure is easy getting to the pump when it's external. What type of setup do you have?

One of the latest purchases...THE DOMINATOR ECU with wiring and FAST dual sync distributor. Man there are alot of wires!! Slightly intimidating! Hopefully this will help her run like a new car. I bought this from Dennis at Moore Racecraft because I heard so many good things about him and the way he does business.
