JCG Restoration & Customs - 70 Mustang Build

Well I am about to venture into the Ford world! I got my first Pro-Tour Mustang... The car just arrived from Tennessee last night.. I have been wanting to do one of these for a long time now & have been given the opportunity by Nick D & his dad to re-do the Mustang.. This will be Nick's first high school car.. He is only 16 yrs old right now & his dad wants his first car to be something he will always remember..

Here is the laundry list..
DSE front suspension.. buying existing components to build a chassis around it
DSE Quadra-link rear suspension
2011 Coyote Cobra engine & transmission
American Racing headers with Borla mufflers
Forgeline wheels
Wilwood Brake System
American Auto Wire
Vintage Air
Anvil Carbon Fiber goodies
Ben Hermance Rendering
JCG Custom Components & body Modifications

Tear down begins this week.. & body off to the media blasting..

I bought myself a '66 Vette my senior year in high school... I graduated in '71...
A year or so later (1972) I went to pick up my best friends little sister (Allison) at the all girls Catlick school -- her younger sister (Gwen) ran out and got in the car... Allison rode the bus home and cried all the way... Gwen and I have been together ever since! 40 YEARS this May.

I've always been a MID YEAR 'Vette guy... and have owned many of them. But I've always loved the classic Mustangs... that's just a duel that has been burning for years!

Nice project! Can you give me some details on your plans for the DSE front suspension? I'm building a Mopar and I've bought the rear quadralink and will modify to fit my Challenger. I'd love to have DSE components in the front also.
Details?

Thanks!!
Wes

Cris@JCG 03-15-2011 08:21 PM

Be a little patient.. let me get my parts first.. I am still trying to map out all the suspension & chassis set up in my head..

Matt@BOS 03-18-2011 09:25 PM

Very cool project Cris. I'm looking forward to seeing this build come along!

Are you going to be keeping the Getrag trans?

Matt

Cris@JCG 03-18-2011 09:36 PM

Thanks Matt.. Me too!

We are using the Getrag trans.. Right now this drivetrain is new to me.. I just spent the last 2 hrs looking @ it coming up with a game plan for install.. I figued out that I will have to re-locate the oil filter.. Get the A/C compressor off & get it dimensioned for a Saden 7 compressor.. The power steering pump on engine :_paranoid :_paranoid ..

The good thing is that I have a buddy that is a Ford tuner & knows late model Ford motors inside out.. He is coming over tomorrow..
It will be a fun project with its share of headaches..

Yeah, these new Ford Mustangs all have electric power steering. You might want to get in touch with the guys over at TurnKey. They recently got set up with Ford Racing and are in the process of developing an accessory drive to fit into early Mustangs.

Matt

GregWeld 03-19-2011 07:53 AM

I'd just make it real simple --- go with electric power steering! Matt @ Anvil did that in his Mustang.... To me -- that's TRICK!

Love this build Cris!

GrabberGT 03-19-2011 08:12 AM

Glad you guys are out there blazing the path for us. I'll have one of these some day. :hail:

I was thinking of using electric power steering on my new project, because I bought a 2011 gt500 engine, but the Ford rack that came with the pull out was broken and a new one costs $1500 and I wasn't sure how the ECU would work in a different car. Next I looked at the Flaming River unit that Matt from Anvil is running and realized it costs $6000 - now I think electric power steering is cool, but 6 grand cool? and that cost doesn't include a column or rack!

TurnKey has been playing around with using what I believe is an electronic conventional unit that adjusts pressure based on speed so the steering "weights up." I think it is an OE Toyota part that Porsche guys first started to retrofit.

Matt

Cris@JCG 03-19-2011 06:41 PM

We had a meeting today about this.. My machinist said.. don't worry about it.. we will get her done!! We got a good game plan for the the power steering.. design with machining a few brackets & pulleys.. it will be a while till we get to that though.. We have alot of other work we need to get done first .. but I see a few other Mustangs coming on that might need these parts also..

Ben Hermance Rendering

Just got the approval from the owner on the rendering!

We wanted to see the car in two different colors..

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...ang1_LOGO2.jpg

Red is the color Nick has picked! At first it was going to be flat red with flat black stripes.. but owner took Ben's advise on a bright cinnamon red metallic!

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...tang1_red2.jpg

Flash68 04-05-2011 08:24 PM

damn that red is hot. nice choice.

coolwelder62 04-05-2011 08:36 PM

Nice,very-very nice. I like the red one.

waynieZ 04-05-2011 08:49 PM

When I saw the first color I said very nice, then I saw the red. Oh Yah! Sweet!
