February 06 Feature Car: Steve Chryssos' 68 Camaro

For our February feature I went back to one of the cars on Lateral-g that has A LOT of history - not only here, but with the owner as well. I'm sure everyone knows Steve's 68 Camaro, but I know you haven't seen some of the pictures that Steve furnished for his feature. Be sure to check it out!

Thanks Steve, I know your Streetfighter has inspired many!

Congrats Steve!! I personally am fond of the 68's. Your car just screams pure function, yet has detail along the way. The best part is knowing that you beat the snot out of it and have more fun than most.

Very nice car. Let's race

Speedster 02-01-2006 04:51 AM

That's such a great car Steve. And the coolest thing is that sooooooooo many people use your ideas and concepts on their cars. :)
BTW, what is the weight of Street Fighter ?

907rs 02-01-2006 05:12 AM

Congrats Steevo. It definitely gets my vote!

slck6t9 02-01-2006 07:45 AM

I have read your story before and enjoy it every time. It is great to see and hear the history you have with your car. Not many of us can say that. I will say that steering wheel picture gets me every time. Man what an impact it must have been. Congrad's on the feature, well deserved.

Scott

Steve Chryssos 02-01-2006 07:45 AM

Whoa! That's cool. Thanks everyone. I'm honored.

Weight is 3150. That's with a steel hood and iron heads/block.

Speedster 02-01-2006 07:57 AM

Do you have any weight saving tricks ?
Especially front end weight.
(Excluding aluminum block)

jimhamptons 02-01-2006 08:07 AM

Great car and a great guy as well....

TravisB 02-01-2006 09:12 AM

steve did I hear you talking about pulling it back apart in the near future or was I imagining things???

FRONT END:
-tubular clip
-rack & pinion steering
-aluminum radiator
-trimmed inner wheelhouses
-No AC
-No heat
OTHER:
-Minimal sound deadening
-Trunk Mount Battery
-Hollow doors (no side windows)
-Lexan rear quarter windows
-Aluminum one piece driver's seat
-Realistic wheel and tire sizes (285 tire on a 10" wheel)
WEIGHT ADDED BACK IN:
-Roll cage
-Firebottle
-Stainless Steel Fuel Cell by II Much Fabrication
-Minimal stereo

There is a real push these days towards "bigger is better" thinking. Turbos, blowers, extra wide tires, increased wheel diameter--even big ass brakes. While weighing out the potential benefits of these components, more attention should be paid to their weight penalty as well. The Lotus Elise and Exige are good examples of less being more.

Yup. Next winter. I have a lot of ideas rattling around in my head. I want to put them to good use. I'll build on the car's existing strengths. So the revised C4 clip will stay, while changes will be made to the rear suspension. You know how it is: Every time I rebuild that car, I learn new things and make mistakes. I know the car can be way better than it is now.

So I'll drive it into the ground this summer and then--before the steam and smoke dissipates--I'll pull it apart. McBride and I have been working together on the makeover.

69Nova 02-01-2006 06:03 PM

I know I have told you many times Steve but I'll do it again, awsome car. I remember seeing this car in PHR and thinking how sick it would be to have a muscle car like that. Hope to see you on this years power tour

Ummgawa 02-01-2006 07:35 PM

Very cool Steve. I too have had mine since the early years.

Cool story about dating your wife. Mine has never asked why the center console needed the cracks repaired.

srh3trinity 02-11-2006 04:09 PM

Nice car, I remember seeing this car in PHR a few years back and this car helped me to understand what pro touring was all about, I was struck by the blend of simple, sound design and innovation.

Musclerodz 02-13-2006 11:18 AM

Very cool car and deserving person. I forward to the next evolution of it.

Mike

Steve Chryssos 02-15-2006 02:04 PM

I've been figuring out my calender for this season's activities all week. Between the Camaro and the V-Rod, it should be a fun summer. :willy:

Bill Howell 02-15-2006 05:53 PM

Off subject, You going to Daytona bike week this year Steve?

Todds69 02-15-2006 05:58 PM

No, I have too much going on right now. But me and my riff-raff, trouble makin buddies are trying to put together a Blue Ridge Pkwy run. And BTW, I get into Nashville on the 27th, so I oughta be in Knoxville on the 29th of Feb.

Thanks Todd, Mike, Carl, Roger and thanks again everyone.

So, does this mean you are not coming here, or just that New Yorkers have a different calender than us southerners do? I do not show a Feb.29th this year.

I will be leaving March 2 for the Autorama in Detroit, so call me as soon as you get this way.
