Cage in

T56 install hit the floor due to a slight variation in the floor (you can see the fold in the metal). I needed to remove some of the welds and straighten out were the floor was hitting. I also gave that ear some plastic surgery.

Painted but not digging the chrome now

Splitter

As it sits now painted Rims / Splitter I think it just looks mean.

Currently have but not installed (yet):
Vortech Supercharger (this is going to be a big project)
KRC pump w/ external tank

looks great man, nice work!

nicks67ca 12-02-2016 08:38 AM

Its been a while since i've updated this. I'm going to move the car into a new direction. Less "race" more "street". I want to use the car more with my family and the roll cage / no A/C and no rear seat don't help with that. I also need to do routine maintenance to the 409 and when adding the upgrades i wanted to do i came to the why bother scenario. SO.......Here is the plan.

SpeedTech Pro Touring subframe
SpeedTech LS Swap Components (Mounts, T56 Tunnel, Clutch, Oil Pan, Headers)
PSI Harness
Vintage Air
DSE Subframe connectors and firewall fill plate
AAW Classic Update
Griffin LS Radiator
Afco Heat Exchanger
RestoMod tank Duel Pump with corner pickups
Clean and paint misc small parts under the hood

Oh and of course LS swap.

First Purchase is in LSA

Sweet upgrades!! All the race car you want with the manners of a Sunday school teacher. Nice!

nicks67ca 12-08-2016 09:44 AM

Part of the project was to create more room in the Garage. I have a fairly wide 2 car that is under the house. It is insulated and has easy access to the 200 amp panel. Some minor upgrades to the garage space are 100amp sub panel, 240v heater, and Pushing my 8' wide bench back 40". This makes the bench recessed into the basement more.

nicks67ca 12-08-2016 12:47 PM

HAHA I get the "do what you want as long as I have my space"

nicks67ca 12-21-2016 12:04 PM

Progress:
Exhaust out (1 header left)
Cooling system out
Hydraulic system out (hydro boost and box are still in)
Oil cooler out
Hide away headlight assembly out

Next up fenders and wiring out then interior.

Boom! Great progress.

nicks67ca 12-28-2016 01:22 PM

Thanks Curtis. My brother did stop over to help. I need to drop my fenders off to my friend who painted the car a few years ago.

The car has had 2 paint jobs / restorations

1995 - all parts were removed and painted by previous owner (family member and worked at a body shop) The quarters were not replaced and did start to rust through.

2008/2009 car was mini tubbed and the outer wheel house and quarters were repaired and painted the grey / gold combo it is today.

Since the front has not come apart since 1995 there is some surface rust that needs to be addressed. I have also found some spots in the wiring that was problem waiting to happen. I have been guilty of just adding on "upgrades" without paying attention to the other details.

This next push if frankly WAY over due.

Sounds like it needed to be done to insure years of problem free mile and smiles. Best you get into it now, before it gets out of control. Besides....these cars are never really done.

Love this build - it's looks great now, and it'll look even meaner once you have the rideheight and alignment dialed

What size tire are you planning on running? Sticking with those wheels?

Awesome car, man!

nicks67ca 02-03-2017 07:05 AM

For now i'm sticking with those wheels. They are corvette 18" replica's which are pretty cheap. I need to recover some from the other major upgrades I'm doing. Eventually i'll probably move to the Forgestar wheels. I'm running a 265 front tire now. I'll probably keep the 265 size or move to the 275.

up next Sub frame connectors and Engine mock up and frame down bar installation!

nicks67ca 03-31-2017 12:15 PM

I also test fitted the Holley mid length ls swap header. 1 7/8" primary with 3" collector. Need to verify in the car with mast pan and speedtech mounts, and steering shaft.

Very cool...how do you like that frame, was considering getting one.

Spiffav8 04-01-2017 08:23 PM

Car is coming along and looking good!! Keep at it.

nicks67ca 06-05-2017 07:02 AM

Got some stuff done.

DSE subframe connectors are in
Down bars are in. I decided to weld them in with a removable tube adapter and the plates welded to the firewall. I have some clean up to do still. Next is to finish the trans tunnel with the speedtech cover then power wash / steam the underside and get the whole thing ready for undercoating and firewall paint.

Thanks!

Its been slower than I wanted but any progress is good.

lsuguy 06-08-2017 11:42 AM

Car is looking great!

Just a heads up. If you ever plan to use Speedtech's torque arm setup you are likely going to have some interference between the DSE subframe connectors and the crossmember section that ties into the torque arm. It installs above the subframe where it bolts to the belly of the car.

You can notch their cross member and make it work, but I ordered mine powder coated and had to have it redone due to the interference. Not a huge deal either way but something to keep in mind.

Good to know thanks! I'm running right now the triangulated 4 link (early generation gbar). I think it will stay put for a while. I love the IRS that use the gen5 stuff but need to keep an eye on the $$$.

Engine Mockup:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...ps5w9vkign.jpg

The Good
Mast Oil Pan fits nice
The engine fits
the steering rack clears the pan and rack.

The not so good:
Driver side header needs to be modified to make the steering connection. I know Speedtech makes a custom header but 1 primary tube modification and it will fit.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...ps7z58xfed.jpg

The crank pulley will interfere with the crossmember when i use the over drive LSA Pulley. The alternator is also very close. I will make pockets to fit these better.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...pslvcwubj4.jpg

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f9...psidufaxua.jpg

I need to verify the Dirty Dingo low mount A/C will fit and then I can begin modification on the frame.

Spiffav8 06-18-2017 06:05 PM

Nice update!!

nicks67ca 07-05-2017 06:09 AM

Been working on the header modification.

There was no room to go above. Not excited about the overall length and additional bends but for now its fine. I need to pinch some pennies and not buying $1500 headers is a good thing. i'll have my buddy tig them up but should have around $550 in them once done.

woah are the speed tech headers now $1500?

I will follow in your steps if that is the case. any luck with the dirty dingo bracket?

Speedtech lists them on their site for around $1400 + shipping. i think summit has them for $1200.

They are beautiful but not in the budget right now.

I haven't mocked up the dirty dingo A/C yet. It looks like it will but will verify hopefully Friday.

Great project. Just wondering about the subframe motor supports you have with your Speedtech subframe. I will share Some issues I ecountered a few months back when I decided to change my oil pan.

Speedtech supplies two types of motor supports. For SBC, the motor supports length is the same on both passenger and driver side. However, with LS engine, the motor support on the driver side is a bit taller than the passenger side to shift the motor by 3/4 inch to the passenger side to allow proper fitment of rack and pinion.

So check your engine supports, if they are equel in length, it means you have the wrong supports for your application.

You could also contact Blake at Speedtech, he is very helpful and can assist you in sorting out such issues.

I am also interested in how the Dirty Dingo low mount AC will fit.

Good luck

Thanks! I did verify I have the right mounts. The header fitment is on me. I decided to use a "non" verified header combination with this frame. I wanted a 1 7/8" primary tube but didn't want to shell out the money for the full length ones speed tech offers. These are the hooker 2474HKR i purchased from Amazon for under $400 (I also had a $100 gift card) so i took the gamble on these. I knew the driver side was a long shot but it looks like it will work out.

I'm hoping to have the A/C verified today. I want to finish the fabrication stuff and get the floor and firewall finished.

Thanks Nick
