Anybody take vitamin supplements and or fish oil gel caps?

My boy is racing motocross and I have been riding with him. I have been working on getting my self into race shape for an assault on the 40+ class next year. I had a physical and the Doctor suggested a multi-vitamin. My cholesterol level is border line high (hereditary, thanks Dad!) If it gets much higher the Doc will put me on meds. I have heard that a side effect is muscle degradation. I would like to try a natural way to reduce it before the drug route. It goes without saying I work out and eat healthy already, so I am not trying to be a healthy couch potato! What vitamins are you guys taking?

I'm pretty into this stuff. Problem with vitamins is they are not regulated so there's no way to know if the pill really contains what the bottle says. Costco vitamins rate high though.

I highly recommend the book "Eat Right For Your Blood Type". Just Google it.

I take stronger faster healthier fish oil along with some other general supplements.

http://strongerfasterhealthier.com/products/omega-3oil

it seems expensive at first glance, but if you consider the omega-3 concentration, it ends up being cheaper for a month than most other brands. Love the stuff, and no aftertaste!!

Eat Right for your Blood Type was a very interesting book. I am a Type 0 negative blood type and just when I was going to stay away from red meat I felt that it encouraged it for my blood type.

I did the fish oil tabs for awhile but burping up fish oil got old fast.

I've noticed thank drinking alot of water throughout the day helps with how I feel and seems to keep the weight down easier.

Everybody is different, and I definitely keep an eye on what eye eat by reading ingredients and trying to stay away from to much sodium and saturated fats but the one thing I wont stay away from is beer. I call it my therapy for the evening and regardless of what anybody says, Hey, it works for me!!

A lady at my old job got me into adding flax seed (ground) to my food. I guess it has a high concentration of Omega3 in it. Oat meal is also supposed to help and I would often add the flaxseed to my morning oatmeal. I added extra water and downed it like a drink.

I've been taking a Costco multiple vitamine daily for 10+ years. So far so good. Luckily, no other meds at all. I'm 53 and still ride off-road with fast company so I somewhat understand what you're up against.

Might consider a KTM 350 also, they aren't nearly as fatiguing as a 450 and more forgiving than a 250.

Krill Oil is the best (1g / day), flax oil is next best, fish oil is 3rd.

I take krill and flax oil and have no cholesterol or high blood pressure problems.

legend 09-02-2011 04:25 AM

not true, flax doesn't convert as well

vitamin D and fish oil are great for everything.

for fish oil you need 1.2g of EPA/DHA per day which is approx 10 of the costco capsules

smart money is on vitamin D at approx 6000iu per day.

FDA guidelines are about 30 years behind the curve. High cholesterol and low vitamin D levels seem to go together, get some D and fish oil then go get tested again

saturated fat isn't the bad guy either, just the result of badly designed research that was sponsored by kellogs

at the time the main competition to cereal for breakfast was bacon and eggs, so "proving" that bacon and eggs were bad for you made a lot of sense for kellogs business.

I've been using Nordic Natural brand Fish Oil. It's a higher quality brand and it doesn't have me burping up that fish taste. Fish Oil (Omega 3s) are good for your heart.

I talked to a buddy who is a Doctor about vitamins about a year ago. He said that not to worry about getting a crazy brand and to recommend Centrum. Vitamins just fill in the cracks of what you might be missing in your diet.

Good luck keeping up with your kid on the track and with racing in the 40+ class. A good time for sure.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Like I mentioned, I am in good shape, eat well and exercise. I hate going on meds if there is another way to help solve the problem. My next test is December 27th, so I have some time to put together a plan and see if it works!

Curtis,

He is fast for sure. I raced as a kid and didn't really have a desire to race now. I enjoy wrenching on his stuff a lot! I started riding with him to help him work on the fundamentals. (easier to show an 8 year old than explain it to him) He has been talking me into trying a race. The 40+ guys are still smoking fast, they are just not as young and dumb as the 250/450 'kids' that are a little more fearless than us older and wiser guys! In other words, they make clean passes and safer choices on the track!

Darren, read up on a supplement called hawthorn for helping with cholesterol.
It's highly recommended in the Eat Right For Your Blood Type book as an excellent "solvent" for cleaning out your arteries and no side affects either.
There's a lot of stuff on it if you Google it.

Good luck with the racing, I miss my moto days often.

Soooo you got talked into racing by an 8 year old. Glad hear you're going to give it try. Me and a few buddies hit up the local track or free ride at lest every other week. Even Todd (Vegas69) joins us from time to time. Great way to spend a day with family and friends! Just remember to take the Advil with you.

Curtis,

Yeah, it wasn't very hard for him to convince me. The conversation went like this:

Evan: Dad, how come you don't race?

Me: Good question son, I don't have a good answer. I am faster than those guys! Where is the sign up trailer?

;)

Easy, you are an old man and motocross is a young mans sport.:D I love speed and have no desire to get on two wheels on the track.

I'll second the nordic naturals Omega 3 fish oil. I've been taking it over a year- high quality compay- costs a bit more than others. I use the lemon flavored- no fishy burps, smell, or taste. I HATE FISH, but this stuff is awesome. No downside to it , for me at least.

Check out Res-Q-Products,I've been taking Res-q 1250 fish oil and red yeast for 7 years,brought my cholesterol down 40 points(240 to 190),still eat most everything I want,I'm 52 and hav'nt slowed down,check it out,worked for me:yes:

I work out - HARD - for an hour 3 days a week.... and watch what I eat... I am still on Crestor... my cholesterol was 108... so I figured with working out that much etc -- I'd stop taking them and wait 3 months for my next blood workup...
Cholesterol DOUBLED.... so you're right ------ BAD DNA! Oh well.....

I'm OLD (58) so take Centrum --- an 81mg baby aspirin -- and the Crestor.

Sometimes diet and exercise just aren't enough.
