Alex's 1970 Chevelle at the Roadster Shop

Here is a 1970 Chevelle we started a few months ago.
Alex came to us looking for a subtly refined Chevelle with a few twists, all the while staying pretty true to the original lines and appearance of the car.

He is going for a 585 HP ls3 w/top mount throttle body and T56 trans. We are planning on a couple of subtle details to bring out or enhance a few features of the existing details on the car. Paint scheme and wheels are still being decided.

Here is how the car came to us - Grandma fresh!

There was a fleeting moment where it almost seemed a shame to alter this one. It passed pretty quickly though.

Onward to the dis-assembly!

tones2SS 11-17-2011 05:28 PM

Wow, great car. Looks clean. Looking forward to the updates on this car.
Where was this car from to be in such great shape?:_paranoid

214Chevy 11-17-2011 06:42 PM

Just as any other RS build...I'll be watching this one too.

INTMD8 11-19-2011 01:28 PM

Sweet ride! I remember seeing that car on ebay. I thought it was advertised as an original paint survivor.

Looking at the before pics I would have never guessed the car ever had any sheetmetal work.

70 chevelle 11-19-2011 02:28 PM

Very interested in seeing this come together. Did RS ever release their headlights. I could swear I remember reading they were going to be offered in one of their past Chevelle threads.

tones2SS 11-22-2011 05:37 PM

Any updates?

We decided not to. The ones we used in the green Chevrolet were an aftermarket version of the BMW 'Corona' or 'angel eyes'. We would have liked to make them into a kit but at at the time the components were not the best quality for us to stand behind as a part.

Should have more pictures fairly soon. We have been working on font bumper mods and some concepts for the rear bumper and exhaust area. We will post pics of them once they are dialed in.

There is a company fairly local to us that come to the shop when we need them.

We are just about finished with the metal work on the 70 and felt it was time for some updates. A lot has been done on the car since the last posts so I'll throw a few random pictures taken along the way.

Once all of the sheet metal was fitted and components in place, it was time to start on the bumpers.

The sides of the front bumper were cut off and brought in to tuck them in tighter to the body.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture219648.jpg

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture219724.jpg

We then cut the center portion of the bumper out to eliminate the license plate recess and create a new style line.

Next, we fabbed up a sheet metal lower spoiler that followed the shape of the bumper.

Roadster Shop quality is second to none!! Definately a cut above the rest.:beavis::beavis:

crazycarguy22 12-21-2011 10:12 PM

I really like that bumper cut out and the chin spoiler. Looks so aggressive.

strtcar 12-22-2011 06:22 AM

Do you re-weld on the brackets to the firewall that the front fender bolts to? I love that smooth firewall, do you just leave existing and weld this one on?

Boss 5.0 12-22-2011 03:04 PM

I have a question that I have to ask....

You have taken the time to blast the car to bare metal, then you do all the mock up and fabrication work with it still in bare metal. I noticed in some of the pictures that the guys are not wearing gloves while working on the car and I can already see rust forming where there finger prints are.

How do you prep the car before primer when you are done with all the fabrication and it is time for body work to commence?

You guys do amazing work. I am trying to learn how some of the shops handle this since I see so many cars in bare steel for so long at this stage. I was always taught that once blasted it is best to epoxy/etch the parts asap. I also always wear latex gloves when working with bare steel so I don't leave those finger prints in the steel.

Thanks,
Glenn

xtreme 12-22-2011 03:48 PM

Man you guys sure do crank through one great build after another! Awesome work!

tones2SS 12-22-2011 05:06 PM

Awesome work. I'm anxious to see this one done. I have a soft spot for those Chevelles.

Roadster Shop 12-29-2011 08:36 AM

The rear bumper is underway. Chris sketched up some ideas that will really set off the rear of this car.

http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ustopening.jpg

Not too much of the original metal left here!
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220539.jpg

The bumper has been narrowed and tucked tight to the body. Now working on fabbing a new sheet metal center section for the bumper.

Kendall Burleson 12-29-2011 08:58 AM

killer back end that will give it another look, Are you changing the rocker to flow with the rear?I have been keeping up with the build more pic.

mild2wild 12-29-2011 10:38 AM

More awesome work by the RS team!

norm86 12-29-2011 05:49 PM

quick question when you guy are doing a car that need all new sheetmetal do you all use the weatherstripping to check correct door to 1/4 and trunk to 1/4 fit?

Norm, we will generally either buy 2 sets of weatherstrip for the car (one for mock up and the other for final assembly use) or we will figure out the thickness of what the weatherstrip is and then tape rubber or shims in place to act as the weatherstrip.

Roadster Shop 01-05-2012 12:11 PM

Some further progress on the rear bumper. It is just about completed at this point. We need to go back and fine tune the gaps and final mount the bumper and lower valance. Then begin on the center exhaust tip.
