Anyone know much about the Chevy Sonic?

Been looking for a car for my 16 year old daughter and have not found anything used to fit the bill. So I started looking at new cars thought this might be a good entry car she could keep through college. I plan to go drive one Saturday. thanks

Mike I know nothing about the Sonic. However, I will say that I was very impressed with the Ford Edge. We looked into getting one and all the reading and reviews where great. I even talked to a few owners, all of whom loved it. We ended up going for the Explorer, but I doubt we would have missed the it had we bought the Edge.

Just a thought..

I would be looking at other brands as well, but a classic car dealer who also owns a chevy dealership is wanting to buy my 69 convertible and give me what I am asking for it, but they want to do a little trading. He had nothing i wanted at his classic lot (way overpriced) so I started looking at the new car lot instead.

Don't forget about the Cruze or Malibu. Not sure your budget, but both those cars get good reviews. I've only driven a Malibu(a rental) and really liked the car.

Mike I service two Chevrolet dealers in my area . Both of them are selling the Sonic very well .. The car has alot of room for as small as it is and the interior lay out is well done also I've had a couple apart already and can tell you its built pretty well. Overall not a bad car ,you can tell they finally are pulling away from the Daewoo crap. By early summer there will be a two door version called the Spark..

The funny thing is, she wants a four door. I could already bought her 10 coupes that fit her needs but not what she wants. I hope she got practicality from her mother because it did not come from me! Thanks for the feedback.

Cruze is only a few bucks more, and I would buy one of the new concepts i saw at SEMA for my wife if they bring it out. They were very cool looking and got great gas mileage

That Cruze looks like a decent car. A friend of mine has owned 4 Malibu's because it's been the best car she has ever owned. She is VERY picky!

i manage a chevy dealer and i personally would pick the cruze over the sonic.

I am a straight up chevy guy all the way, but the ford focus looks pretty cool for a small car and they are pretty neat inside.

my son has an 07 focus and I have looked as those again, but can't find the deal I found for him. plus the market prices are weird which is another reason I am looking at other options. they seem to keep decent resale for about 5 years and then plument in value.

she would probably be happy driving my 69 vert i am selling, but that isn't going to happen:willy:

GregWeld 12-17-2011 08:11 PM

Yep Mike!

Gwen and I went to look at a nice red '62 Impala a buddy had for sale when Alex was 16.... but we came to the conclusion that as "good parents" - we had to have 3 point belts - and air bags etc. Sad - because it was a really cool '62.

We got him a Durango instead... LOL

Mike, is the camaro the Fathom green LM1 vert? I remember seeing a post about it at team camaro. Do you have any completed pics of the car and whats the asking price?

mexMan 12-18-2011 10:42 AM

I like a lot the new Chevy lineup, BUT I'd get the Cruze over the Sonic, and for the same price range, I'd rather go with a Ford Fiesta, better quality, overall, for what I know.

I would love to get a cruze, but unless I can get it for same money, it is just a little outside what i want to spend for her first car. If I did not have to get her a car right now, i would be buying a cruze for the wife.

I just purchased a new 2012 Cruze Eco about a week ago. I have a 95 mile per day commute for work, and wanted something to put mileage on instead of my toys that I'd been driving. I test drove all of the competitors in the sub-$20K compact segment, did some thorough shopping on them. I thought I was set on the Ford Focus SE, until having driven them back to back. The Chevy feels/drives/looks nicer than the Ford inside, and felt more solid and stable. The Chevy also had a better trans and much less wind/road noise. Also drove the VW Passat and Jetta. Nice cars, but fairly boring with the auto trans and they still felt cheap inside. Their 5-cyl sounded overworked when accelerating.

Things I liked about the Eco? They did stuff that we enthusiasts can appreciate. They shaved off any excess pounds, put it on lowered suspension, covered the underside in aero panels, added a front air dam, rear spoiler, rotary forged wheels, low rolling resistance tires, and active shutters in the grille that close at highway speeds. All without the car feeling stripped or low buck. I picked the 6-spd manual, as it nets 44 mpg (mine is averaging this exactly). It is a 1.4L turbo, and still only requires 87 octane. Basically a turbo/manual gasser that competes with hybrid mpg.
