1966 Suburban at the Roadster Shop
We have a pretty unique project going on for a local customer. I started mentioning it in our Shop Project thread a while ago. The truck is making some progress and I have had a lot of people asking about it, so here is a build thread dedicated to the truck.
We spent a good amount of time looking for the right truck to begin the project with. We finally found a real solid California truck (that was residing in New York:D ) that had the clam shell back door and was relatively unmolested. As the truck arrived. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220328.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220326.jpg |
We worked with Eric Brockmeyer to come up with a few initial concept designs for the truck. The customer is really into long boarding and wanted to carry that theme with the truck. We are still playing around with colors and need to finalize a lot of the details, but this is the direction that we are heading.

The parts have started coming in for the truck. We went with a 572 with a F2 Pro Charger and EFI. We are shooting for 700 - 800 HP while retaining good drivability. We are figuring that this burban should end up tipping the scales close to 5,000 lbs so it will need some muscle to get it going.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220432.jpg The Pirelli tires are just huge! 305/35R24's in the back and 295/30R22's on the front http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220660.jpg We put the front wheel fron Chris's Chevelle next to them for comparison. It almost fits inside of the rear tire! http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220662.jpg |
Hey guys, any info on that Camaro over there? Anyway, the plans for the truck are REALLY cool, I always enjoy a build like this one.
|
That is awesome. Really like those old subs!
|
Here is a photoshop mock up of the ride height with similar wheels to what we will be using. The truck will sit right at 6" at the front of the rocker and 7" at the rear

looks good , I like the light brown and off white
|
The tan or yellow is more surfer DUDE.Very cool.

Nice! I love these old trucks...and I'm always excited when I see a "truck" going down the PT route. One of my relatives had a Suburban of a similar vintage when I was a kid that was fully restored and I've been thinking about building one ever since. Looking forward to watching this build!

The truck was disassembled and all were patterns taken off the original frame to begin the new chassis design process. Once we had the original frame rails scanned and in the computer we then manipulated the kick ups and shape of the rails to get the desired ride height.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220387.jpg Cool shot of the frame rails being built. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220592.jpg Completed frame rails fixtured in a jig and chassis construction underway. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220645.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220642.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220613.jpg |
Very Heavy Duty.

Looking forward to this one. I like the 68 grill in the rendering. http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...P1010002-1.jpg |
Killer! You guys have some of the coolest builds going on.
Keep us posted. |
Yellow gets my vote.
|
Very cool build, always loved the Suburbans. Being partial to the 60-66s, I can't say I'm a huge fan of the 68 grill, but it will be cool to see how it comes out - don't recall ever seeing it done before.
I'll toss a vote in for the green - something is just right about it on that body. Can't wait to see more progress. |
Awesome concept and beautiful work as always. I really cant wait to see the modified next-gen front end on there. We did a rendering for a customer with the same idea a few years back, but it never came to be. Even had the "floating" grill bar. Cant wait to see you guys bring it to life!!!

Man that thing really looked nice before you even started on it!!!
|
I saw what you have in sale, I must tell you, I'm thinking about buying the Ford T pickup! Anyway, great work you've done there.
|
Great build, I would go with the green.

The burban came back from media blasting yesterday and surprisingly, there were no real surprises! Always a good start. There are a few small rust issues and a few holes to fill here and there,, but overall it is a really nice truck.

The chassis is also just about wrapped up. Just waiting on a sway bar and a few other small parts.

Looking good guys. What are the arches or loops in the round tubing support/structure bars behind the tranny mount?
|
Those are put in so we can run a crossover H pipe in the exhaust.
|
wow- what a cool project! What a clean start.
|
Outstanding work. That's a pretty clean truck to begin with. I can only imagine how awesome this truck is going to look.
|
I really like this idea, and great work. That would be a fun daily driver.
|
good jod again:thumbsup:

Once back from being blasted, we mounted the body to the chassis and began the metal work. This was a pretty solid truck, but still had a few issues here and there. A lot of the standard stuff like bottoms of fenders, rockers and a few pin holes around the truck.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220935.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220948.jpg The driver's side needed a new lower fender section, door skin, floor section where it meets the rockers, and a few small rust areas in the quarter. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221115.jpg We also decided to widen the rear wheel opening so the 24" tire looked right. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221107.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221123.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221229.jpg |
The passenger side needed about the same work. A little more in the quarters where there must have been a leaking window that caused a lot of pin holes in the top of the quarter. This is a prime example of why we take cars down to bare metal. The previous restoration used spray foam to fill up the pinholes from the inside and was then painted over. We never would have know unless the car was taken down to bar metal.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221134.jpg Once the metal was cut out, we found all of this Great Stuff Foam. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221358.jpg New panel tacked in place ready for final welding and metal finishing. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221398.jpg |
The engine that is going to power this beast! a 572 with a F2 Pro-Charger looking to make 800 - 900 HP.
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221378.jpg |
Looks great. Man what's with people and spray foam lately?
|
Great work guys. That 572 looks beastly.
|
Awesome job you'll never know there was any rot. This is going to be slick when your done.
