1963 Fairlane at the Roadster Shop
This is a pretty unique project that we are building for a repeat customer. He likes cars that are out of the norm, but definitely cool in their uniqueness. We are just getting underway with the latest, a 1963 Fairlane. The car will be built to look completely stock and give it a total grandma/sleeper look. Underneath the car will be a custom fully independent Fast Track chassis. Power is coming from a Jon Kaase Boss 9 motor with a Tremec 6-speed.
As the car showed up: http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture219811.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture219820.jpg After removing the coils we played with a lot of ride heights until we got one that the owner was happy with. (the version that we were happy with was abut 4 inches lower! As the owner put it, "if it was up to you young guys every car would be so low you couldn't drive it") http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ideHeight2.jpg |
The car was disassembled and the chassis was designed and built for the car with our Fast Track IFS and IRS
http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220548.jpg Test fitting the body on the chassis before it gets sent out to be media blasted. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture220498.jpg |
The body came back from media blaster with all kinds of surprises!

A true "specialist" must have been the one to originally restore this car. The bottom of the quarter was "constructed" from cardboard, spray foam, wire mesh, and a whole lot of bondo! http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221177.jpg |
Beginning of the sheetmetal work. Since Fairlanes aren't all that popular, there literally isn't a single sheet metal replacement panel available. So everything had to be fabbed from scratch.

And then this showed up....

At the risk of loosing my car guy card, why do they call them shotgun motors?

The first Ford Nascar motor with big round intakes was banned. Calling the shots from the bleachers I would stuff one of these in the Fairlane.

We have been taking care of the rust issues all over this car. Not a single piece is available so everything has to be fabbed from scratch. It is turning out to be a rather involved project.
Lower quarter panels welded in place http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221969.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221966.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221870.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture221820.jpg |
Started on the inner and outer wheel houses as well. A lot of other smaller rust repair and panel fabrication has been done just about everywhere on the car. Rockers, floors, kick panel, cowl sides, top of the quarters, and just about everywhere behind the side trim has needed some attention.

I always love to see your fab work. Excelent job!

A couple of updates since you asked so nicely...
Motor/trans and chassis are together and under the car so much of the internal sheetmetal work is underway. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture222122.jpg Wheel tubs in with trunk floor and side panels coming togethern along with rear seat panel. http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture092.jpg New floor sections to accommodate the chassis clearance areas http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture222134.jpg http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture222298.jpg Also, given the height of this motor and the stacks, we need to add some clearance into the hood! http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...ture222140.jpg Template for the shape of the new hood http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...cture099-1.jpg Beginning the fab on the new skin http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/s...Picture099.jpg |
|
We got the hood wrapped up on the Fairlane last week - it stayed fairly subtle while giving us the necessary clearance for that tiny little motor...:_paranoid

Hood
Looks incredible as expected!!
Novice question... how much room do you need above the velocity stacks to ensure you have enough air flow? |
Ty - The guys at Jon Kaase (engine builder) recommended 2" of space above the stacks to allow enough room for air to enter.
