Flaming River or Ididit???

I need some opinions on a Flaming River or Ididit column please. Is one better than the other?

On the same lines is one safer than the other? Collapsable?

214Chevy 03-07-2012 02:40 PM

I'm more partial to Ididit. I like their quality and look much better.

jh99 03-07-2012 05:27 PM

Neither one is collapsable that I am aware of.

x2. Asked 'em both at Colombus.

For me the one of the deciding factors is the location of the key in the column, (if you want a column with a key). Ididit has that weird location that is angled... google the two, it's too hard to explain.

I agree with Matt the Ididit has a bunk key location. I have one in my car and the thing that bugs me the most is the movement of the wheel after the tilt is position.

I seem to recall Widowmaker had a collaspable one. I googled it and looks like they have one

My Ididit has been known to pop out of position unless it's in the bottom two positions. I called them and they will repair it at no cost. I just need to send it back. I just haven't been motivated to tear the steering column out of my car and shlep it to Minnesota or where ever.

If your just looking for a tilt wheel check out this guy on pro-touring or his web site gmtilt.com

I think they are now making a column with the normal GM key location.

FR.... Hate the tiny little key and location on the ididit... The key looks like the one that came with my luggage

jh99 03-09-2012 11:45 AM

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning towards the Flaming River column. Now I need to decide if I need a collapsable.

tech@scotts 03-09-2012 02:49 PM

Some info Ididit has changed there key location on all of there columns and they are all like a gm location now.

With Ididit they have a lifetime warranty on there columns and come with all gm internal made parts.

If you are looking for a good deal on a Ididit column we can help you out and save you some $$$.

You can p/m us if you would like to or you can e-mail us if you would like to at

r.friborg 03-11-2012 11:12 AM

Love my Ididit column.

High quality and nice style.

Have a 68 so no key in column

jh99 03-11-2012 04:41 PM

I have not heard bad about either column, but more have made comments about how they like the Ididit. Too many choices!

MCB Matt 03-23-2012 02:27 PM

We sell both, no issues with either and for the 69 - up guys the new Ididit ignition is NICE NICE NICE....and MAJOR improvement

The Flaming has a nice ignition as well

Both companies give us good service too

Ididit has a few more finishes/materials to choose from

Matt

this used to be my biggest complaint about ididit .... however they finally wised up and fixed the problem , now the key is in the factory location
Flaming River doesnt even include the correct pigtail to install , you need to buy extra parts just to make it work

Anyone had excess lash with a Flaming River tilt Column?

Define excess, or excessive? The one in my car has a little. Seemed about the same as an Ididit.

Yeap. The tilt just seems sloppy up and down.

David Pozzi 03-25-2012 12:33 AM

Any excessive lash in the upper steering shaft when turning the steering wheel left & right? By excessive I mean enough to be noticed as above normal, - more than a stock GM tilt column? I drove one car that that had enough to bug me if it were mine.

Grnova 03-25-2012 09:08 AM

I had problems with my stainless steel Flaming River, tilt column coming out of lock when driving . Really scary! I need to contact them and see if they can rebuild it otherwise I has lasted for 10yrs so far!

The WidowMaker 03-25-2012 01:46 PM

buy an ididit collapsilbe one. if they dont make one already, have them make one for you. they made me a column for my 70 after i realized that they are selling non collapsible columns for vehicles that came with collapsible ones. if they thought it was important enough to mandate it in the late 60s, theres no reason anyone should be driving around without one.

jh99 03-25-2012 06:43 PM

I am leaning towards the Ididit. Now thinking about the collapsable option. I think it's a good idea.

The WidowMaker 04-10-2012 03:36 PM

did you do any more searching?
