'69 Cutlass W31 Clone LY6 Build (formerly Red Rocket)
Hey Folks,
This is the same car that was being built in my Red Rocket build but I realized I liked the Saffron Yellow paint so much I would keep it. I had been doing a boosted build originally but life just kept getting in my way so for now it is going for the sleeper look with the column shift and bench seat. It has Boss 338s on her right now with 285/40-18 in back and 255/45-18 up front. I am highly considering going with 17" steelies with poverty caps to complete the sleeper theme. She has a full BMR suspension under her with Bilstein shocks. I may swap the rear springs for 2 inch drop if I don't like the stance. Fuel system currently consists of a Rick's tank with a 5th gen Camaro pump with a 4th gen fbody regulator sipping thru a Vaporworx pickup assembly. This today I just got done the main portion of the exhaust. I am sticking with LS3 Camaro manifolds for now so I can keep the column shift. Engine is an LY6 with lightly ported L92 heads, LS3 intake/injectors, FAST 90mm throttle body and a Lingenfelter 102mm MAF. She also has a decent Lunati cam and a built 4L60e with a 2600-2800 restalled stock converter. Rear's a 12 bolt with 3.31 gears. When I finally get all the parts together I will be going boosted...think Jim Moran's (Speed Inc) '70 Malibu...absolutely LOVE that car...very inspirational! Here's a few pics and vid of her running with the exhaust for the first time. Enjoy! Oh and sorry for the ridiculous mess that is my garage. Trying to finally get her cleaned up. http://youtu.be/pnEmLUHZv-0 http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0256.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0254.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0255.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0253.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9434.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9417.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9413.jpg WAY DIRTY interior but overall in good shape! http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9443.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9441.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9431.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/IMG_9097.jpg Lots more to come! Hope to have her make her first passes at the track soon...driving to and from of course! Thanks, Dave |
Cool! The W31 cars are so overshadowed by the W30 cars. I love underdogs though so this will be cool. Think you can find a way to have the cold air scoop mounted and functional?

Thanks for your interest!!! Dave |
Small update today. Got the exhaust done for the most part. Tails were welded on. Also did a bit with the fan wiring tidying everything up. Should have everything wired and ready to rock shortly...hopefully tomorrow. I have to still order up the pinion yoke to correct an issue I am having but other than that just some details here and there.
I will be hiding additional gauges in the glove box out of view and will flip then down when I mean business. I will then turn my attention to some light bodywork to make things mildly presentable but not overly...I am beating the CRAP out of this thing for now! BTW, not sure I mentioned this but this car as a CPP big brake kit as well. Very happy with it at this point. Here's some pics and another vid! Thanks! Temporary air filter set up for now: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0260.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0262.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0263.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0264.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0265.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0266.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0268.jpg Here's a link to another vid! http://youtu.be/blAuclYw9BA Thanks guys! Dave |
Nice Dave! What's going on w the looped hose near the lower radiator hose?
Sorry for the newb question...Oh yeah, fix that leak too  |
Quote:
Yea I know...not sure what the heck happened there honestly. I have pulled that thing on and off about four million times so I'm pretty sure at some point I forgot to put a gasket in there...or perhaps I reused the one I had too many times...to be honest with you I can't even remember if there was one there...lol :D |
Small update....got her up and running...working on tuning. First time doing this stuff so I am being extra careful so I don't grenade her by accident. I will have a lot more pics tomorrow but I just wanted to give you guys a little hint on what direction the paint scheme will be going...not exactly W31 anymore...
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0659.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0662.jpg This was just a test fender as I playing with modern colors...I am still working on finding stripe dimensions, etc... BTW, colors are Toyota Super White and Ford Green Gold! I love 'em!!! Looking forward a free weekend to knock out a little bodywork! More pics to come soon! Dave |
Very cool. Always liked the W-31's.

Here's a few more with her FINALLY on the ground!!! I am VERY happy with the ride height at this point and it will only get better. I threw the ****ty fender up on her to see how I like the H/O paint scheme...i think it decided it for itself! I will probably end up changing the wheels out for something a little more "correct" for the feel I am going for. http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0671.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0672.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0667.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0673.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0670.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0665.jpg More to come!!! Trying to dig out of the mess that used to be my garage!!! Hahaha! Thanks! Dave |
Hurst Olds theme will look great and it looks like you nailed the ride height.
My uncle had a 70 442 back when I was a kid and from then on I was into the W-30's & 31's. He used to take us kids out all the time. Looking forward to following your build  |
Nice project! My dad was a huge olds guy. Unfortunately he passed away last year. But this is one of his cars he left me. Btw it's not a clone.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/n...n/26d5dd8e.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/n...n/cbec9e0e.jpg it's a bit roughy now but I'll get it back to is former glory. Sorry guys this car won't be a protouring car! Ryan |
Very cool to give it the Hurst Olds look. I remember when the '69's came out.
Wasn't easy to join that owners club. |

Best of luck with her! Dave |

Here's where i am at on the wheel decision: http://www.forgeline.com/product_ima..._image-392.jpg I will admit though that the price made me mess my pants a little...hahaha |
Quote:
lol Obviously can't go wrong with Forgelines. Below are prototypes. I don't know if anyone else decided to produce them. http://www.pro-touring.com/showthrea...otype-pictures http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...z/DSC01822.jpg |

I love the look of the Forgelines but last night priced them out and had to change the bed sheets after ****ting myself....lololol. It is defintely an awesome wheel but the near $5K sticker was a little hard to swallow! I was just warming up to a set of wheels for around $3500...haha. If I could find some more pics of the enlarged SSIIs you show above I could make a little better decision fo rmyself!!! Dave |

There are more big pics at that pro-touring link I posted. Tried to send ya a pm but couldn't...you're too popular? |
Here's a email I saved from Gary regarding the billet Olds rally. I also called Bonspeed about 2yrs ago asking is they have these ready for production and they said they have chosen not to produce them. I wanted a set for my conv.
http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/...-52-30_248.jpg Season’s Greetings Jeff! A while back you provided your name as an "interested party" on my web site, StreetsmartClassics.com, for the Billet SS2 or SS3 Oldsmobile style rally wheels as they became available. I've had a lot of uphill battles to climb, but finally, an existing billet wheel manufacturer has thrown me a rope to help make this wheel available to you. I have recently partnered with "Bonspeed" in California (bonspeedwheels.com). Bonspeed is one of the premier 2 piece billet wheel manufacturers in the U.S. who builds 100% of their wheels here in the good ole' USA. Their billet wheel manufacturing skills, quality machining, and top of the line polishing capabilities inspired my efforts in contacting them for assistance. Bonspeed's help has greatly reduced the wheel prices, opened the door to more wheel sizing options, PLUS allows the buyer custom backspacing options. I will no longer have any part of the actual wheel construction. The Billet SS2 and SS3 wheels will be built completely by Bonspeed. My only contribution to the wheel now will be through its design, past and future efforts in sharing the wheel with you through marketing, and to assist you with placing/taking your orders. I'll work with you to help you obtain the correctly sized wheel and make sure that your wheels are completed as ordered and safely delivered to your door. We all know that our economy is terrible and that times are hard for many. I realize that this is certainly not the best time to announce the release of these custom wheels to the public, but for those of you who signed up as "interested parties", I'm finally able to provide you some GOOD news on the wheel. My apologies on the delay. I am now ready to start accepting orders from anyone that may be interested in this Oldsmobile style wheel design. Below my signature, you will see my current pricing, size, and finish options list for your review. If you are interested in the SS2 style wheel (Olds rally wheel with the look of a raised trim ring), the listed prices and options shown below for the SS3 are identical for the SS2. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I apologize in advance if you receive this email more than once. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas Season!! Here was something along the lines of what I was thinking...sorry for using a pic off your page, Jay. I'll pull it off if need be.
http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/RatedX-1.jpg Just a quick photo-chop I did tonight of what I would like to see on this car. Love the ratedX, jury is still out on it though. What do you all think? |
Cool build!
Subed.. |
you are going to LOVE the LY6- we just did the swap like you with the LS3 intake, stock heads, not as much cam and this car pulls hard!!! enjoy:D

Right now I am fighting some tuning issues with her since I never did the tuning on a fuel injected motor before so it is keeping me from driving it. That, and I didn't register her yet....hahaha. Youth, you have a PM! Dave |
A little bit of progress...been doing body work when I have a free second. First time really doing this but I am pretty happy how it is turning out. This car is going to be a nice driver that I can say I did all myself in my garage..........and driveway...haha.
Here's a quick couple of shots showing how messed up the original fender was...I do not have anything currently showing the true ****tiness of the original fender but this gives you an idea of at least one of the repairs needed: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0736.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0737.jpg Here's my repair: http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0739.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0740.jpg And the pre-finished product after the first coat (still shooting it again): http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0825.jpg http://i908.photobucket.com/albums/a...1/DSCN0824.jpg Yes I know it is a bit orange peeled but this was literally rattle can special that is purpose mixed by the local shop. It is 2006 GTO Torrid Red. An odd thing happened as I got a gallon of it a few weeks ago that was supposed to be Torrid Red...it is way darker...not sure what was going on there but this is MUCH more obnoxious!!! More to come! Dave |
Nice work Dave!
