What mufflers you running and why?

I'm ready for mufflers and exhaust and running low. I was interested in what mufflers you're all running and why. Also, what you've run in the past and why you've switched to something different. Interested in all your edgemicated info.

I have Flowmasters on my Camaro. They sound wicked, are loud, and flow like garbage. Probably one of the worst flowing mufflers out there, but I have electric cutouts to aid in the flow dept.

Putting Borla XR-1s on our Chevelle. 3 inch with a stainless X pipe, and tailpipes to he bumper. Heard that combo at GG autocross on a DSE car and was hooked.

I have also had good luck with Magnaflows and Dynomax race magnums in the oval case series of each. They are quiet and flow air like mad.

My favorite combo so far has been on my Nova though. 3 inch pipe to the bumper, stainless x pipe, and race magnum bullets. It was loud but very streetable and I always got compliments on it.

I always reccomend xr-1's as i love howthey sound unique but super bad azz.there also supossed to flow real good and they are fully SS to boot.

Flash68 04-02-2012 03:59 PM

Spintechs or nothing for me. I had Spintechs. And now I have nothing.

Car came with 40 series flowmasters and i hate them

214Chevy 04-02-2012 04:23 PM

Hey all, I want the Borla XR-1's for my Chevelle as well. But their website says they are for racing. With that being said, are they ok for the street?

canrc 04-02-2012 04:32 PM

I have Flowmaster 50 Series...Thought I would hate them....but I don't

SLO_Z28 04-02-2012 04:33 PM

Magnaflow 2.5in non mandrel bent, with a dual in dual out crossover style muffler. Very low interior noise and sounds great!

Vegas69 04-02-2012 05:05 PM

How loud do you want it? 1987 Winston Cup loud or a little attitude?Im sure I know the answer but humor me. Ha

yeah they are just louder than street mufflers.

The ultimate sound varies depending on what your backing it up against. However, we ONLY run XR1 on our builds. Our shop Camaro actually picked up .12 ET by adding them compared to none at all (open headers).
Most of our client builds are Big Blocks and they sound super aggressive. If you are annoyed by interior resonance then these are NOT for you. They are free flowing and loud.

Here is a 510ci BBC with 3.5" XR1's we built a few years ago.

I like their slims, item #40536 w/oval 3.5" inlet and outlet but I was looking to do 3" from my 3" headers in oval tubing as I'm sitting pretty low. Would rather do borla's but it's looking like I may have to go Spintechs. Don't know if that's a good route or not as people seem to have a love hate relationship w/them. I noticed Scott changed from Spintechs to Borlas. I'm really trying to keep things tucked up for clearance. Open to all suggestions:question:

Any of you guys have the stainless works ones? Curious how they sound

69znc 04-03-2012 03:32 AM

Stainless Steel Works

I run SSW turbo mufflers and I love them The right amount of resistance to lower the sound (lower is relative) when normal driving but the back sounds like musics when you get on it. Very happy. I run 3 inch all the way. Could not do 3.5 for clearance issues. Specifcially I run thier part part #: TM5C3O3OP . Have for several years. THey seat behind a BBC 632

Thanks Todd. I heard your car a few years ago at the LG SEMA party. Back then you had your "old" BBC. What mufflers were you running back then ?
Yours sounded pretty bad ass too. I remember Mark L and I turning around when you pulled in and being instantly drawn to your car because of the sound.

Vegas69 04-03-2012 08:03 AM

Steve, they are magnaflow that dump before the axle.

dubbleu 04-04-2012 04:37 PM

I went with SSW mufflers, 3" pipe all the way as well as thier headers. I love the way my 540 BBC sounds. Not overly loud for the street or highway but when you get on it...... they sound sweat!!

Barry 04-05-2012 07:56 PM

I run a $32 muffler I picked up at Autozone. 3" in and 3" out...but that's after the electric cutout. On my LS6 Sonoma.

rfrankb4 04-09-2012 11:12 AM

I used Race-Pro mufflers from Pypes that came with a 409stainless 3" kit for my chevelle.

The reason I used them was the cost of the full system was very reasonable but I have been pleased. Interior noise is significantly less than the flowmasters it had before.

They might be too quite at times but I am sure my neighbors would disagree. The exhaust note is nice from behind the car. In front of the car the cammed LS valve slap overpowers the exhaust note. Inside the car it is reasonably dB levels. I can reasonably hold telephone conversation on the interstate due to the insulation but still get plenty of compliments.

My original plan was to run these until I decided to cough of up money for one of the Borla pieces but now I have decided to stick with this since it works out so well

Rhino 04-09-2012 07:51 PM

I can't answer the question for Todd, but my preference is turning them in. The reason being any exhaust/oil is blown toward the center of the car rather than on the tires.

6D9 04-09-2012 08:17 PM

I am running Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on the Camaro and love them. They have that crisp chambered muffler sound but almost a straight thru design. They are pretty mellow at cruise rpm's but rip when the skinny pedal is pushed...

Musclerodz 04-09-2012 11:18 PM

We have run Magnaflow on most everything unless doing full 304 stainless exhaust. They sound great on just about anything plus no drone which I hate the most. I need to take a video of the 455 Pontiac with Magnaflow, sounds great. The 480hp crate LS3 with DSE headers was just plain nasty sounding when you stepped on it.

jski67 04-10-2012 03:58 PM

I'm running Xr-1s with a BBC...not too loud at idle and screams when you put your foot in it.

Here's an older video with the mufflers dumped in front of the axle. I've since added tailpipes and it's a good bit quieter and higher pitched.

By the way, I'm running a Ram Air restorations oval x pipe kit from the headers to the mufflers. It's a nice kit, but the transitions from oval to round to go into the mufflers are too long (which keeps you from tucking it up much). I kinda feel like they defeat the purpose of the oval. Just my .02.

I really like the XR1's. My only complaint is I kind find them with an offset or outlet which would have helped packaging.

I agree with your comment almost 100% .......

Except, that I was never planning on changing to something else. I have Race Pro's flowing through a Pypes 2.5" stainless system with their X-pipe. At idle and cruise it is not a resonating nightmare, but when you get on it, it is a simply awesome sound!!! It is my opinion that an exhaust system can brag the best flow numbers, but sound like crap......and in the end, entirely personal choice. It's like buying stereo speakers or choosing a wine :unibrow:

Must be something but Orange Camaros and SSW that just go together!! Would never run anthing else:yes:

Tony_SS 04-10-2012 05:29 PM

Magnaflow, 2.5 with an Xpipe. It's much better than the old chambered mufflers I was running.

I tried a Dynomax Ultra Flo on my truck, but there's too much drone. From now on its Magnaflow for me...

SuperSport 04-13-2012 09:08 PM

Anyone have performance mufflers that they thought were just too quiet? If so, what where they? Because I want those, lol.

any turbo style is "quieter."
maybe get some giant stock ones from a vette or camaro.

67XR7 04-14-2012 07:59 AM

went from magnaflows to 2 chamber flows because I wanted it a little louder at idle. flows just sounded like everyone elses car except for when I had them on full 3" exhaust on my last 5.0. now I'm running spintechs and am waaaay happy when Im driving they just have this sound I cant explain almost like a light rasp. needless to say EVERY PERSON who has heard those mufflers with the exception of one has liked them and have plans on running them on there car. my crappy cell phone video does zero justice but here:

Bucketlist2012 04-14-2012 09:38 AM

I am running the Pypes Street Pro's with 2.5 inch S.S. and the X pipe..

With the 280H cam ,it is really Sweet Sounding at Idle, but at WOT, it is Intoxicating..Love it..

And there is a slight drone at some speed, but you can get to a speed on the highway when it is quiet..

rocketman 04-14-2012 05:02 PM

i have run flowmasters on everything i own and build for 20 yrs, IMO there the best flowing, best sounding muffler out there with lots of options for sound in there muffler line up
