Unreal 1967 Mustang

In this build I will show the good and bad features of building a Dynacorn body.

My customer has wanted a Fastback Mustang for a long time but could not find a good body that did not require a lot of rust repair so he decided to buy a 1967 Dynacorn body. He started calling around and could not find a body back in January. He called Dynacorn and they told him they had no idea when they would get one in. He was getting discouraged and had to go back to work where he works 10 weeks and than is off 10 weeks. When he got back in town he started checking around and still nobody had one. He found a project that was never started that came with a lot of extra parts so he bought it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/02.jpg

Some of the good points are the shock tower braces, extra welding in the engine compartment and a lot more spot welds and the export brace

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/08.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/09.jpg

Another good feature is the one piece seat riser.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/11.jpg

I have never seen an after market valance fit this good but it is bolted together instead of screws.

Is there a such thing as finding "a good Ford"? Just kidding!! I love Fastbacks and that may have been part of this issue is finding a Fastback as they are hard enough to find in itself, yet alone a good one. Keep updating this build.

Yea the Fords are usually better than good, especially sportsroofs:rofl:

Rusty do you have any details to share on what the build will entail? Suspension? Brakes? Drivetrain? What's it going to be?

GPR 07-14-2012 07:50 AM

We have not had the time to work on this yet but have an issue with the door gaps. This is what we found so far:

The hood bumper brackets are not straight

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/03.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/04.jpg

Dynacorn does not spot weld the quarters they are plug welded and than they ground the welds to much.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/13.jpg

GPR 07-14-2012 07:51 AM

The door and trunk bolts are metric

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/12.jpg

We thought at first they had metric threads but they are the same as all Mustangs so I changed them. Notice there is no ecoat under the fender brace. We will be sanding the complete body and spraying 2 coats of SPI epoxy.

GPR 07-15-2012 10:08 AM

The owner sanded and I epoxy primed the narrowed Fab 9 rear end that came with the car

Curiosity is killin me so I have to ask. What would someone do to where they work for 10 straight weeks then are off for 10 weeks? Oil rig?

Electrical engineer on a cruise ship.

Installing the TCP subframe connectors. The minimum clearance between the factory frame rail where the subframe connectors attach in the front is 27 1/8" the Dynacorn body was 27 1/2" so were were okay.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/21.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/22.jpg

Once we had them welded in place we went to test fit the center brace and it would not fit in the back. Dynacorn welded the frame rails in the wrong place. The distance between the frame rails is 1/2" narrower than stock spec in the front and 1/4" in the rear behind the shackle mounts. We will have to modify the TCP center brace.

dynacorn

hope you have more luck than we had with a 69 camaro convertible! the A pillars were the wrong angle! the roof overlapped the top by nearly 2", had to do a lot to make everything work, there are a lot of mounting brackets etc that are off from an oem car, we have learned that its best to repair original parts if at all possible!

GPR 07-20-2012 09:22 AM

The snubber brackets are not mounted in the same place on the frame rail so Brian removed them so we could install the cradle for the TCP rear suspension.

Cradle bolted and welded in place

GHOSTDANCER 07-21-2012 09:27 PM

Subscribed. Can't wait to see how the Dynacorn body works out.

GPR 07-25-2012 01:49 PM

The cradle is supposed to bolt to the pinnon snubber mount but there was no holes and it was off center a little.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/30.jpg

Brian welded a bracket

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/34.jpg

Brian decided to improving the welding a little

If only the doors, fenders & hood fit like this.

GPR 10-07-2012 12:17 PM

The deck lid fit great but the doors, fenders and hood are another story.

Once the fender apron holes were modified to get the fender back so there was not a large gap at the windshield and front of the hood there was not enough gap at the door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/73.jpg

The hood is to wide at the back and will need to be trimmed

Looks good so far can't wait to see it done.

GPR 10-20-2012 11:00 AM

Brian had to grind and add material to the door

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/78.jpg

After grinding

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/80.jpg

He also had to do the same to the front

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/82.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/83.jpg

GPR 10-20-2012 11:55 AM

The left vent window would not fit so Brian had to drill out the spot welds and bend the sheetmetal a little to allow the vent window to go in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/84.jpg

The bracket on the inside of the door where the bottom of the vent window attaches was in the wrong place and had to be moved

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/85.jpg

GPR 10-20-2012 12:22 PM

Brian had to narrow the hood than weld a strip on the back side

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/86.jpg

Very nice. Love this body style. I had a dynacorn door for a 68 camaro and i couldn't get it to fit. Things on the inside of the door were welded wrong. I ended up just fixing the original door.

GHOSTDANCER 10-20-2012 05:35 PM

You all are making it look too easy

waynieZ 10-21-2012 12:03 PM

As always amazing work. After seeing this you can imagine what the beginner home builder is going through.

GPR 10-22-2012 08:26 AM

We went to install the brake pedal and steering column bracket and it would not fit. The dash was installed wrong and had to be moved toward the firewall the bracket was 1" to short from lining up. We compared the distance from the dash to the firewall on my 68 Coupe to determine the dash was in wrong.

GPR 10-23-2012 07:44 AM

Something fits with just a little modification

The taillights fit after trimming the rubber seal a little

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/98.jpg

Once the holes on the fenders were elongated the headlight buckets fit

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...astback/99.jpg

The amazing thing was after all the work on the door gaps the edge of the hood lined up with both headlight buckets from CJ Pony Parts. The Dynacorn headlight buckets have been on back order for over a month and I was told probably another two months before they would be available so we got them from CJ's. They are a little ripply and will require some blocking but they fit.

We have been working on a couple of things I can't show at this time. A modified lower front valance and a future story in Modified Mustangs & Fords magazine showing a period correct looking hood latch with an under the dash hood release.

But I can show this

I confess I'm not sure what you are showing us there - is that where you replaced the normal leaded seam with a flush welded panel ?

fleetus macmullitz 12-02-2012 10:25 PM

Looking forward to seeing this one built.

Yes so I don't have to use 1/4" of filler

GPR 12-06-2012 03:28 PM

This is what Brian has been fabricating. It is an under the dash hood release. The hood required a lot of fabrication along with this latch that came off of another Ford. To find out all the details you will have to read the build story in an upcoming issue of Modified Mustangs & Fords magazine.

I've been watching this build with interest. I heard some cool stuff around the water cooler here at the office. Keep the pics comin'!

We have been working on getting the fenders, headlight buckets and doors to line up

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSCN3745.jpg

The body was sanded down to bare metal and the next step is spray 2 coats of SPI black epoxy

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSCN3966.jpg

GPR 01-19-2013 08:38 AM

The rear valance had a tack weld and also bolts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSCN4026.jpg

Instead of studs on the valance Dynacorn used 2 different size bolts and washers from inside the trunk and attached to clips on the valance

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...k/DSCN4029.jpg

We wanted to take off the rear valance to see what was behind it and just as I thought bare metal and surface rust
