ZL-1 1969 Camaro Pro Touring

ZL-1 1969 Chevrolet Camaro-Pro Touring

Up for sale is likely the most capable ZL-1 powered 1969 Camaro on the planet. To take it one step further, likely the most capable ZL-1 powered car, period. I’ve taken the great heritage of the ZL-1 and surrounded it with the best money can buy. The engine was built by one of the most reputable engine builders on the West coast from scratch with this exact application in mind. As you are about to see, everything on this car is top shelf and some of the best shops and manufacturers in the industry have been called on to contribute to the finished product.

This car has been sorted out extensively on the road and track. You can literally win a car show, road race, autocross, drag race, and drive to and from the track in one weekend in this car. While it’s a dominator on the track, it has the modern sports car feel on the road we all desire. The ride, brakes, and steering are phenomenal. I daily drive a C6 Corvette and the ride and steering feel is on par or slightly above. The handling and braking is a couple rungs up the ladder. It’s got unbelievable linear power but it will lope down the interstate at 1800 rpm in overdrive with the AC on and tunes blasting. My point, it’s been tested to take any curve ball you can throw at it. It has proved to be extremely reliable with no mechanical failures of any type on the road or track after the ZL-1 was installed.

This car doesn’t just talk the talk, it walks the walk. Not only does it look great, it performs! I’ve ran 0-100-0 in the 13 second range which is Corvette ZR1/Z06 & Dodge Viper territory. I’ve also ran in the 11’s down the quarter mile. However, this car really shines in the handling department. I’ve run a 2:14 lap at Buttonwillow in CW1 configuration and placed in the top 10(Entire field) in local SCCA events driving to and from the track while my competitors trailer. Recently, I entered a speed stop squared event with approximately 75 cars at RTTC. It consisted of an acceleration test, U turn, slalom, and braking test in to a small box. I recorded a top 5 time. In my opinion, this is the ultimate litmus test for a pro touring car. The competition was strong with autocross champions and the manufacturers such as Detroit Speed & Engineering.

You can buy this car and go out and play tomorrow.

The Start

I started with a very clean complete 307 survivor with less than 100,000 miles on the clock. Included in the sale is the original protecto plate and invoice. Believe it or not, I picked this car up in Michigan and it was clean due to its inactivity. The owner stored it in his Mom’s garage for nearly 20 years and barely drove it. I was pleasantly surprised upon disassembly and blasting. We were able to keep all the original GM metal with the exception of the front fascia that had been replaced sometime in its life. I also added an aftermarket cowl hood for air cleaner clearance. You can’t start with a better car.

Body
I contracted Prodigy Customs in Florida to do the dirty work. They took the complete car down to bare metal. They blocked the car out until it was flat as a board and then they sprayed it with base coat/clear coat Glasurit paint. It’s a very dark black and it’s got great depth and shine. I’ve got more compliments on the paint job than anything else.
I also had them add Detroit Speed & Engineering subframe connectors and mini tubs. A 4 point roll bar was added for structural rigidity and safety. It’s stiffer than my C6 vette. The firewall was shaved for a super clean look.

Engine
The heart of the beast is a custom built 489 Big Block ZL1 by Pettis Performance. Pettis Performance is based in Southern, CA and has a bullet proof reputation for building big, reliable horsepower. This engine is loaded with the best components available:
• GMPP ZL1 Aluminum Block (110 lbs)
• Callies Forged Crank Shaft
• Manley H Beam Rods
• JE Forged Pistons
• Total Seal Rings
• Dart Pro 1 Heads(Custom Pettis Performance Port Work)
• Manton Pushrods

• ATI Harmonic Balancer
• Edelbrock Victor Jr. Water Pump
• March Performance Serpentine Accessory System

This engine is built with the intended application in mind. I wanted a power plant that was happy to idle all day long, enjoyed freeway cruising in high gear, but would pull to 6,800 rpm(Redline) like it’s pissed off! It makes 666 hp at 6200 rpm and 641 ftlbs at 4700. It makes some serious average power. Pettis Performance nailed it!

Driveline
With all the power the ZL1 makes, the car needs a bullet proof driveline.
• Quicktime SFI blow proof bellhousing
• McLeod SFI 14lb Aluminum Flyhweel(For quick revs and rpm matching)
• McLeod Twin Disk RXT Clutch(Rated at 1000 hp)
• TKO600 modified with carbon fiber synchronizers and pro 5.0 shifter

Included in the sale will be my notes and the specification sheet outlining maintenance requirements, part numbers, wiring diagrams, invoices, and recommended suspension settings for each venue. Also included is the engine blue print and dyno from Pettis Performance.

Who am I? I’m a GM ASEP trained master technician that uses his knowledge and skills for my passion instead of a living.

I’ve poured my heart and soul into this car. I’ve got over 2000 hours in it myself. I hate to sell it but I’m ready to start a new project and this one needs to go first. I’m asking a very reasonable $95,000 OBO. You can’t dream of building this car in this ball park.

The car is currently at Best of Show in Southern, CA getting the nose blemishes fixed and the paint polished. This is a 4 year old restoration but the car is in very nice shape. I welcome all inspections and the car will be ready for viewing on approximately August 3rd, 2012 in Southern California.

I don’t NEED to sell the car, I do WANT to sell the car. If you are financially capable and serious, shoot me an email to set up a time to talk. [email protected]

Happy for you, but depressed at the same time.

I've seen the car run, raced, driven, etc--for anyone who's a legit buyer--it's every thing described and every bit as nice as the pics show. No detail on this one has been overlooked--in fact, every detail has been well thought out, tested, refined and nearly perfected. It really is ready to go and will look amazing doing it.

Good luck with the sale brother. I hope it gets to the right home.

Not to detract from the sale thread of an awesome car (makes me wish I had an extra $110k sitting around) - but what's the next project you have in mind?

Something more race dedicated?

makoshark 07-26-2012 01:32 AM

Hate to see you sell this car, but I understand you want something racier. Your car was a huge influence to me in my build. I enjoyed reading your build thread as it was coming together, even with the 200+ pages of :lolhit:

Good luck with the sell! Can't wait to see how the next build will turn out:cheers:

cdushane 07-26-2012 04:38 AM

Holy shiz I thought this was another one of your April fools jokes

GLWS Todd, can't wait to see what you do next! This is one bad a$$ car and it definitely inspired some of the things I've done with my builds as well. Best of luck!

Steve68 07-26-2012 05:45 AM

ONLY 3 pages so far, wow I think this would be a Lat G blow up,

good price for the car with the time and products you've invested, G/L

Vegas69 07-26-2012 09:23 AM

Thanks for all the kind words and I'm happy to see that I inspired some of the new guys. One of my goals with my thread was to save you guys time and money showing you how I got to the finish line and how to make a very good performer through experience and tuning.

Except for the time spent that it takes to read through your thread:D

ironworks 07-26-2012 10:35 AM

I guess Greg was right, your going to sell the car cuz your scared of a little yellow mustang.

Just say it ain't so.

"Evil" peak horsepower number.......

Cool car, saw it last weekend and was impressed.

Rybar 07-26-2012 12:50 PM

GLWS Todd, you helped alot of us out with this build. $110k could buy you some nice investment property in Vegas for sure.

sik68 07-26-2012 02:13 PM

It will be sad to see it go, but I have a feeling you won't be without a build for long. :lateral:

JKnight 07-26-2012 02:17 PM

I'm still not convinced it's true ;)

I'll be looking forward to seeing the next one come together though Todd.

Good luck!

69x22 07-26-2012 03:16 PM

Someone will get a nice car! Hate to see it go...

Bet he goes with a LS in the next one.

96z28ss 07-26-2012 06:24 PM

I saw this coming along time ago, Dave G is next. Once the ring goes on the finger all the toys go away.

Hey Todd, can we get a price without the engine and tranny?
Potential buyer might want it to be faster. LOL j/k

Vegas69 07-26-2012 07:16 PM

Guys, remember that this thread is to sell the car. I don't want to get drug down any roads on this or that.

To answer the LS question. The only way I would go to a small block is initial cost. IMO, an aluminum big block is the ultimate and I've proved it can hold it's own plus some. Average power wins. The weight distribution is 52/48 in this car and it's got less nose weight than many of the high end LS cars around here.(And they are naturally aspirated)

GRob 07-27-2012 10:24 AM

Todd, pictures of the rear passenger area may be helpful as well.

Steve1968LS2 07-27-2012 05:51 PM

Saw it at Best Of Show the other day.. considering it gets ran hard the paint, and the car in general, is in amazing shape!

The big-block is so nasty sounding.. good luck with the sale, I'm considering selling mine to build another project, so I know it's not an easy thing to do. You have a TON of time in that car.

Whoever buys it is going to be one happy camper!

Vegas69 07-27-2012 06:31 PM

Will do Rob.

Thanks Steve, it took me 6 months to convince myself to make this move. It's the first object that has had real sentamental value for me. Part of the process was making peace with the decision to let her go to a new home.

Recieved my first offer today. Not quite enough to get her at this point. I encourage buyers to look at the car or have it inspected. You are going to like what you see. The value is there.

Fastest Speed Stop Time at 2010 RTTC out of ALL competitors including DSE(We hooked up the timer later in the day by battery)

2012 RTTC Autocross day one(Unfortunately my go pro crapped out and this wasn't my best run)Rear shocks have been replaced to fix loose condition at max effort in autocross.

Again, this is from the first session since my go pro went dead. I ran a 2:18 on my only clean lap of this entire session. In session 5, I finally got some clean laps and ran two consecutive 2:14's to end the day. I'm confident I could cut it down to 2:10-2:12 with the alignment and rear shock change I've made. Still, mowed down M3, M5, Shelby Mustang, S4, and everything else that got in my WAY. I also installed a much larger oil cooler after this event. Notice the 52 row in the build specs. http://www.ncracing.org/results/1109..._Lap_Times.pdf

I've missed most of my best runs over the life of the car due to short battery life or malfunctions with my go pro(And operator error). I think these videos show the raw speed and capability of my car.
