Rebuild Break In
I just had my 355 Gen 1 motor freshened rings, cam, bearings. I was going to do the 20 min 2K rpm break in with open headers.
1) I've had a couple people say no way because if there is something wrong with the motor you won't be able to hear it. 2) With brand new ceramic coat Doug's headers I was thinking they may not discolor as bad with less back-pressure. Opinions please. Hooking the exhaust up could cause a week set-back in the schedule. |

Complete nonsense.... fire it off and bring it up to to speed... double check the timing and set as required... If there's something not right - you'll hear it in how the motor is performing. And if there's something wrong with it - not hearing it isn't going to fix what's "wrong". It's a do over if you start hearing stuff. Don't just set it at 2000 rpms though - vary the rpms - your neighbors are going to love you! Go into any dyno room - you'll see the operators wearing headgear... and they're noisy as hell - you can still hear a lifter ticking if ones gone bad and you can hear the off note. |
Thanks Greg, we're on the same page.

Yeah --- I'll bet I've been to 30 "run in's" and more than that - dyno runs... chassis and motors... and it's always been the same -- do your absolute best to set timing etc BEFORE fire up -- fire 'em off -- check the timing and start wingin' 'em to the moon.... The rings these days are lapped in by the time they've got all the pistons installed.... the bearings are all coated with break in lube... you've got break in oil with the right zinc and blah blah... So it's really just the cam/lifter that needs to seat... and that gets lubed by splash - thus the RPM's...
BTW -- this is ANOTHER reason we all love ROLLER CAMS! The last two motors I've done --- the LS2 in Ricks '55 and the blown stroker in Rudy's were both fire 'em up and they idle... and you've got all the time in the world to check stuff out without the raucous rpms. With the LS"x" motors --- there isn't even anything to check out!! OMG - just twist the key and drive away! :D |
The 383 short block will have a roller - trust me.
This was a fast-tracked tight budget and I liked the cam profile. Hopefully it's properely degreed or close to the original setting and I'll see a decent improvement from the new ignition, heads, intake, carb, and slightly larger headers...........hopefully! If I do my homework right and get it all prepped to fire in the evening I can come home at lunch, light it up and quick set the timing at 10* and massage the throttle for 20 minutes. Ambient temps are in my favor and I have a commercial fan that pushes a lot of air I'll park in front of the radiator. Any recommendation on Spark Plugs? |
I like Champions personally --- here's AFR's recommendation for their 195 head. They don't build the 190 head anymore.

I like to vary my RPM's when breaking in a cam between 1800 -2300 for about 20-25 mins and remember to check your valve lash before and after the break in. Good luck, have fun and have Rev take some video please Quote:

Thanks for the info Jerry.

Well.............we might have the car home tomorrow evening and parts may arrive from Summit on the 10th or 11th and I may have time to get everything done this weekend so I can light it up for the twenty minute break in period and send it back to the shop for sheet metal installation.

HEY it's 4:00 and I don't hear any rumbling!!! :willy:

He's probably out driving the thing.
Honestly, I hate doing an engine break in with normal lifters. It just feels so antiquated now-a-days. However, like being able to work on a carb, it's a good thing to know how to do it properly. |

But that's your braking finger, noooooo! And yes, winters almost here and time to go ride your orange pony. I can't ride till march, it's killin me...
