Congrat's to Brian Hobaugh!
Congratulations to Brian Hobaugh on winning the BF Goodrich Hot Lap Challenge at the 2012 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational, presented by Royal Purple Inc. & K&N Filters. See the finishing order for the field at the Power Source blog.
Incredible driving, was a blast watching the car. http://www.optimabatteries.com/us/en...-hot-lap-chal/ http://www.camcojb.com/temp/hobaugh.jpg |
Cool, Congrats Brian!! Nice guy too.
|
Yeah good job man. Way NOT to suck!
Thanks for making OPTIMA a great time. |
VERY Impressive considering the power advantage Steilow had. Congrats Brian!
|
Yeah, you drive the corners smooth as silk, and fast. Congrats on the fast times.
|
Beat the Champ in two out of three driving events...

Great showing Brian! I figured you would do well. I can't believe the title came down to a difference in design points between you and Mark. :wow:

What's the skinny on the rear spoiler extension?
|
 :woot: :woot:
Great car. Great driver. Great person. Congrats. |
Watching the track I would have never guessed that Brian had the fastest lap. His line was so smooth -- that it brings up the old saying -- SLOW is FAST. Mark's car was spitting fire -- and tires were squealing -- and he used every inch of the track... Which, of course, is exciting and looks fast (and it was!)... Brian's line was so smooth and there was no drama.... Just super sweet driving.
 |
They were both getting it pretty hard based on their incar cameras.
|
Congrats Brian!
Still mad that you edged me out in the Speed Stop deal.. lol Great car, great driver and great guy.. |
Brian do you know the lap time difference from last year vs your winning lap this year?

Thank you to everyone for the kind words. Congrats to all that were there and put on a great show. All the cars and owners there were top notch and represented our passion well. Brian |
Congrats Brian. It was an awesome experience to watch you and the other OUSCI competitors run.
|
Glad to hear you did so well Brian. Congrats!
|
Way to go B! A muscle car on top--that's very cool.

I don't know if you saw my comment on the other site, but congratulations Brian! All of your videos from Optima are unbelievable! I wished they had been available before the race, because they are great instructional material. I'll get my stuff posted up soon, but your video's make mine look like I'm running in slow motion. Kinda embarrassing  I too thought that the noise on the road course video, was you down shifting twice. I noticed that you were going down to 2nd in the s-turn section before the main straight. I was staying in 3rd, and not getting near the drive that you got, coming up the straight. It was very interesting watching the video on the autox. The little adjustments that you made. You could tell that you and your dad are a helluva team. Anyway, it was fun getting to hang with you and your dad. Yall did a great job!

I spoke to Brian at the Wilwood booth briefly, and he said he was ready for the road course this year.
Great job. |

Great seeing you again and hope to see you out West next year. I am going to try to get out to your neck of the woods next year. Brian |
Brian --
You raise an interesting question for me. Now that you've experienced "road racing".... what's your thoughts on it FOR YOU vs Autocross? In other words -- do you like the "more seat time" on a road course vs the short workout on the autocross? Or is autocross still your deal? I'm a newcomer to the road course -- and from what I've been seeing -- for me personally -- I'm not much interested in the autocross (except to work it! ) |

I have enjoyed the open track. It is very different for autocrossing. The good for open track: seat time, speed, passing. The bad: expensive entry and wear on car. Overall, I still prefer autocrossing for many reasons. The main reasons are: different track every day, much more challenging courses, more competition, and much cheaper. I also enjoy the down time as that is when you can hang out with your friends. It seams track days are more business and less hanging out. Open track is a huge challenge for me as it is new. I hope to get about 4 - 5 track days in next year. The rest of the time will be spent at the autocrosses. Brian |
Congrat's To you Brian and a awesome prepared car.
|
Congrats Brian, one of my favorite Camaro builds.

That stance is killer.

The spoiler is so verticle for a few reasons. For SCCA CP, the rear spoiler can not extend beyond the rear bumper and 10 in maximum height. I could push the base foreward, but I would loose the aggressiveness I desire for lower speed. Max downforce is what I am after. It seems to work for these guys: http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Cup-Series.jpg |
Brian, Ratman brings up a question, that I've been wanting to ask you. How does the tall rear spoiler not put too much down force on the rear of the car, and lighten the front end, especially at speed on the road course? It looks like you would need a bigger front spoiler or splitter to balance out the aero on your car.

I was getting some really good rear grip on the sweepers. They are 75 - 100 mph or so. The way I have the car set up, just a little lift off the throttle would help turn the car. If you watch the video and listen to my throttle input, you can see how I did it. I was happy with the balance. It may not be ideal, but it worked okay for me. I have a larger front spoiler and I may experiment more with it next year. Brian |
How much does that rear spoiler deflect at speed? Thicker/thinner material could be used to tune aero loading at speed.....if it's legal. You could make a tattle-tale with a rod and O-ring to measure deflection similar to shock travel.

Yeah Brian, I can see what you're saying about it starting the turn in when you lift the throttle. I can't believe how aggressive you were driving, even on the warm up lap. You sure made the most of that years worth of test and tune time. :wow:
|
congrats Brian on building an awesome car and the strong finish at ousci.
