1966 Chevelle - Project Complete!
I am a lurker by nature. I have been lurking around this site and occasionally posting for some time now. I have always thought of keeping everything close to the vest with my build, but quite frankly, the guys at Best of Show are doing such a RAD job that I had to post some update pics. Right now the car is at Elegance Auto Interior as they try to wrap things up (pun intended) and I hope to be driving this thing no later than January 1 2013, which happens to be my birthday.
Having owned 2 first gen Camaros, a 3rd gen and a 4th gen - The Chevelle was not my first choice. But after starting a family and realizing the need for a midsized car and a back seat, I quickly gravitated towards this body style. I bought it in December of 2008 from the original owners family. I drove it home from LA to San Diego - it was all original except for the target master 350 in place of the 327. It is an original Malibu with a gauge pack and knee knocker tach. After various planning stages and concept deliberations, I set off on this rebuild in May of 2009. My wife and I decided to grow our family after it's purchase and went from one son to three... hence the delay. However, I finally convinced her to let me finish the car this year - so I got a vasectomy and dropped the car off at Best of Show a week later! I added a few pics of the build as it progressed from a very dry but original clunker to what I have today. Like I said, the countdown is on and we are at the home stretch. Enjoy! |
Engine and assembly pics. The L92 short block was sourced by Tom Nelson are Nelson Racing Engines. I bought some used LS3 Heads and sent them to West Coast for a CNC port and valve job. We added a cam and the Fast intake - it subsequently made a hair over 600hp. Pretty stoked!
The car is now starting to come together - engine and trans are now in (T56) and the Kore 3 brakes (thanks Matt A) are now hung and looking SANO! http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA |

Got the treatment at Redline Gauge works. They modified the original gauges with VDO internals. The tach remains stock in appearance but see the redline at almost 8000 RPM. Restored the original steering wheel to tie in with the stock look of the dash.

This is cool...
so the guys at best of Show went into a mad thrash to make an earlier than expected appointment with the interior shop. So last week, they tied up all the loose ends so we could drive the car into the interior shop. Unfortunately, one of my headers needed modifying so they couldn't kick the car over in time. They gave it to me to take to the exhaust shop, where the header and the whole system would be completed and installed. Dick at BOS told me "it should start" so give it a try - this was last SUNDAY! So, I did as I was told and kicked it over - it had a basic bench tune on the Holley and all fluids were filled. http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA |
I'm offended you kept this from the bro's all these years. Nonetheless, it is a stellar car. I like it. Post the interior pics once it's done.

away from the shop on the way to interior
I brought it home last Sunday night. I really couldn't stop staring at it. i mean, it fired for the first time at 1 pm, drove it on to the trailer at 2 pm, and had it parked in front of my house by 4pm. Took a quick shot of it as the sun was setting and again in the garage. I was stoked that the whole rig fit in the garage, truck trailer and all.
Monday at 7 I met with Mark Lopez at Elegance Custom Interior to go over the interior layout. Needless to say, I am pumped! Here are some more pics... http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA The BUDNIK wheels are on order and they will hopefully be here within a week to get them ready for final mounting... those I will keep as a surprise until the car is on the ground. http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA |

Nice car Enzo!! |
Awesome! Loving the build. I'm an hour or so north of yah, we will have to get together and cruise together sometime.
I like how you kept the stock gauges too...that's pretty cool. And the black...whew that's a sexy color. This is my 66: http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...lle454/145.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...lle454/142.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...lle454/141.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...lle454/144.jpg http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...lle454/143.jpg |

For sure - I am in North County San Diego so anytime after the new year hit me up. I plan on putting some miles on it - cars and coffee in Irvine seems like fun. Your car looks sick... really cool. |

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...4/P2090898.jpg Funny you mention that Cars and Coffee show, I was talking about that show this morning. I've never been. And definitely after the New Year. I'm hoping I'll have free time then! Life is crazy. I will be at the RTTC event with my car in February. |
Enzo,
Glad you got some pictures up. Wheels should be done soon  |

Looks like your "tunnelectomy" came out nice, good stuff. (technical term for T56's in Chevelles :D) A bodies ftw! |
Awesome project, thanks for posting it. Besides the car love the garage!
|
Wow!!!! What an awesome build. For some reason I really love 66 chevelle's.
|
:wow: Black 66 that is a sweet looking car.
This is total BS:mad: You are supposed to include us step by step so we can all second guess your decisions and argue over what you should do with your build:rofl: I love the restored steering wheel and dash. Those are some great elements of the original style to save. |

Interior
If you are in SoCal and need some interior work done, you should talk to Mark Lopez at Elegance Auto Interior in Upland, CA.
I took my car there 2.5 weeks ago and it was bare. He gave me a quote, came in under the estimate, and was done with everything within 2 weeks (which included Christmas in between). Needless to say, I am way stoked on his professionalism and service, but mostly for his Mad Skills in laying up my interior! Should be on the road any day now... here are some pics: http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA http://im1.shutterfly.com/procgtaser...0Aas27ZkzZNGgA |
Interior looks amazing! Not over done, but very clean.
What can you share about the rear seatbelts? Looks great. I have kids and would like to do something beyond lap belts, which were optional even. Mine didn't even get those originally. |

Love the work he did looks GREAT!! |
Enzo,
Congratulations. You nailed it man. Everything is so well executed. Things like this don't just happen......you obviously planned this build out. You took a great car to start with (a '66) and made it much, much better. Love it! |
Car looks fantastic, sounds pretty mean too.
What did you end up using for engine mounts, headers, and oil pan? |
