Spoke too soon!
Well, most of you saw my new paint pics. Upon further checking tonight there are some issues in the paint and without writing a book it's going to need to be stripped and re-painted. I will paint it this time, I've learned my lesson! :willy:
Jody |
Sorry to hear it
Jody,
Sorry to hear about your troubles. As the king of do-overs, I know what you are going through. Good luck with the re-paint. jp |
Thanks John, I appreciate it. I was disappointed that I delegated this part of the build anyway, now I get the chance to make it right! But it seemed like the smart move at the time, being as it was in the 30's temp-wise and he had a heated paint booth versus my un-heated shop!
Jody |
That sucks Jody. How much time is this gonna set you back? Maybe you should run the Lightning on Power Tour. You could call yourself Charlie's support vehicle. :D
|
There's an idea! Or maybe drive the Malitude for Charley if Mark can't make it!
I see no way to make it now, this will cost me a month if I'm lucky. Jody |
I hear ya
I'm working on my 3rd engine plan these days. I've been ripped off on 3 different occasions trying to get my engine together.
Back to paint: mine is finally going in for paint in a couple weeks, so your troubles combined with my previous bad engine luck has me a bit nervous. But I'm hopeful for the best, and I've talked with them many times. So it should go ok. Does this put a big damper on your power tour plans? jp |
I don't see any way I'll make it, but time will tell. I'm still going to go though, but I doubt it will be with my car.
Jody |
That's too bad to here. Perfectionism sucks don't it. I might have been driving my car years ago if it wasn't for my disease. Is there a short story version?
Mike |
Simply put............sorry jody.
What a disapointment.Do it right and do it your way, the right way. Your humble fan,Chris :hail: |
Wow, Jody, Tremendous Bummer. My offer still stands :D

Here's what happened in a condensed version.
First paint job, looked great. Started color-sanding and buffing and went through on a couple of small areas on the 1/4 panel (painter did, not me!). Wasn't into the base coat, but left a milky image. Figured out he painted 3 coats of clear, sanded the whole car, and then added two more. No problem with this other than you now CANNOT go through the top two or you'll leave an image where you get into the sanded clear coat. He thought about blending the areas, but also figured we weren't done sanding and in all likeliness we'll go through several more. So he re-shot the car. Second job looked awesome too. After completely sanding the car down we start to buff. Do about half a 1/4 panel and then notice some tiny white dots. They're UNDER the clear, on top of the base coat. Nobody else was spraying in the shop at the time he did, so he figured it must have been a dirty gun. They're all over the place so we can't leave them. On to job three and where we're at now. The painter has been 100% stand up but I can't let him do it again. I will strip the car back to primer, re-block and primer, seal, and shoot it myself. Jody |
Dang!
Damn Jody, I am really sorry to hear that....but you are correct in taking to time to just do it the right way...The joys of building a car...hang in there buddy, it will be wicked when finished.
|
Yeah, but now I'm re-thinking my color choice! :willy:
Jody |
i know how you feel man, we have re-done parts of my car also and it makes a man go crazy :willy:
|
What color are you thinking about? The original rendering?
Mike |
No, todays choice is silver with Black Hockey stripes
|
Sorry to hear about the problems, Jody. :(

Jody, that sucks. Sorry to hear about it. I'll be painting my car in July and hearing stories like this makes me cringe. I have no desire to have my car in Paint Jail so I will be shooting the car myself. I've been reading a ton of tech articles on painting with these new base/clear systems and have purchased several videos on the internet that were recommended to me by some folks over at Camaros.net. I'm curious as to why the car was blocked between clear coats. I thought with the new systems in use today this was not necessary. Or is this the secret to achieving a 'smooth-as-glass' finish?
Oh, and in regards to the color....I personally liked that Orange color you were going with in the original rendering. It was a Chrysler color...wasn't it? |

Tony, There really is no reason to do that in my opinion. He insists that the final product will be flatter even if you color-sand both ways. Makes no sense to me but he's the pro. To me it would make the color-sanding a little easier as the clear would be flatter; but once you color sand it either way it should look the same. The color in the rendering is Kris' fault! I actually was trying to get him to match a solid orange truck we saw at SEMA the year before and he kept coming back with this burnt orange which on his monitor looked the same as the pic of the truck I sent him. Not very long after I started liking his color a lot more than mine! Problem is it's a made-up color by the program he uses to do the modeling. I wish I could find something that wasn't full of pearl and I'd do it. I guess I could go with the orange on the truck, I had tracked down the shop that did it. Here's the pic of the color I wanted originally as this Camaro is a Hugger Orange car. To me it's a modern version of Hugger Orange and I was going to keep the black Hockey stripes. What do you think of this color? http://www.camcojb.com/Hugger pickup.bmp |
That truck color is awesome. But something that would stand the test of time ,and my choice would be the silver.Check out some of the darker platinum colors.Try some tone on tone colors.

If you go back black, if it were me, I would do a single stage urethane not a base/clear. Color depth is much better. Thats what we have found in cars we have done. Just a suggestion.

That's surprising, but also offers the benefit of easier touching up in the future. Thanks! Jody |
With Black it works the best, other colors are ok, but not as nice. This is the only color we do like this.
|
I think the orange on that truck would be killer with a yellow or gold pearl but since you mentioned trying to stay away from pearls which I understand, I like the original hugger orange better. I like the idea of the darker silvers or slate with the black hockey stripe or even a charcoal stripe. That too would be cool.
Mike |
Jody, what are the odds that you're just gonna wind up copying your old ZL1 clone? Gotta stay with the Steelers theme..... :P
|
Jody.....the color on that truck is awesome. And with a black 'hockey stick' stripe?
Oh yeah. |
Jody, sorry to hear about your problems. On another note the orange on that truck just screams! I'd definitely consider it.
|
Jody,
Bummer about the paint, been there. Cheer up, as eventually, it will be another "interesting anecdote" of stories regarding the build. I like the silver idea. In particular, I like color of silver on Ford's Cobra concept car. Slightly darker silver than the Mule, with lighter siver stripes. BillyBob |

Thanks guys. Tony/Bob, I like the orange too. It'll be a spur of the moment deal, I'm sure. I'll just walk in and buy the paint and that's what I'll use. I like so many colors it's tough to choose. Want to be unique, but not trendy or too far out there!

Sorry bout your troubles Jody. Mentioning the paint sure got everyones ideas flowing, if you really want to mess with everyone, dont tell us what color you went with until its painted. Did I say that?!? :_paranoid
No matter what, the car will be amazing, the paint is just an added bonus to the rest. Tim |
I really like the orange color with black hockey sticks!!
William |
I am very sorry to hear this Jody,
Paint is such an important part of the car and it is the thing that gives it character. Please don't buy just any jar of paint, think it through and if I understand you, your gutfeeling is with that orange truck. Go gor it. That will be awesome and it will for sure get attention. And be careful when you do the painting, it is tricky. Jan |
