Has anyone tried American Racing Headers on a Gen 1 Camaro with an LS engine and DSE subframe? Just trying to get ideas for my build.

Gatekeeper 01-02-2013 02:22 PM

OK I went ahead ordered a set and I guess I'll see how they fit. :D

Talked to six different tech's and they all responded like Schultz on Hogan's Hero's.......I known nutink.

They make one of the nicer LT headers for 4th Gen Fbody's. I'm sure they will be a great header and I hope they fit the DSE frame. Let us know.

They have been around awhile. Go to ebay, and type in (American Racing Headers) or their web site and you'll see. They are real big with the C5 & C6 vettes and later model Camaros.
I just hope they work with the DSE subframe. If they do I'll sure let you know.

Don't know how they fit yet, but here's a pic of one that Dan Holohan sent me. Dan found out that American Racing Headers is a split from Kooks Headers. When Kooks moved to Statesville, NC some of the guys stayed up north and started ARH.

I put ARH on my 2010 Silverado 6.2L. They are awesome headers, I'm very interested to see how they work in your Camaro. I've already talked to them about running them in my 68 as well.

Hope they fit well, The car is looking great.

John, I hope they fit also. Going to do a mockup as soon as I get my transmission and bell housing to Dan's shop. Also gotta see how much tunnel we need to cut to fit the T-56 magnum. I've been on here reading and I know the tunnel will need to be raised a little. I'll post pics when we try them.

Sieg 01-19-2013 09:08 PM

Header looks great, fingers crossed for a good fit!

Gatekeeper 02-05-2013 11:58 PM

Mocking up with a dummy block, but will know more when trans. crossmember gets here and cut the tunnel. Crossmember should be a Dans shop tomorrow afternoon.

OK, we ran into problems. Running the half height body mounts the headers hit against the bottom of the car. And with regular height body mounts you will only gain 3/8 of an inch clearance where you might have problems with the clamps. Here's a couple of pics.

What's your drive-train angle? Can you lower the rear of the trans and still have 2* to 3*?

3 degrees. It's where Dan says it need to be.

2.5-3* is right..........I was hoping clearance might be as simple as lower the rear mount. :headscratch:

American racing headers and DSE sub

I see DSE offers several different motor stands,060401 and 060404. Maybe changing those could help?

Dan has both sets at his shop, the height is the same. The other set moves the engine back 1 1/2" to use the DSE headers. Going to try a different brand.

If you have not decided on headers, I would recommend Lemons headers; perfect fit

GregWeld 02-18-2013 04:47 PM

I know a couple other guys on here that have run into various issues drivetrain wise running the half height body bushings.... makes a guy wonder if they're worth using.

Looks to me like you have floor mods in your future.

WSSix 02-18-2013 07:02 PM

Kook's makes headers for a 1st gen running an LSx. http://www.kookscustomheaders.com/show.php?pid=868

Great quality to go along with the asking price. I've always been impressed with Kook's headers. I just really wish they wouldn't use ball collectors. Personal preference but I hate ball collectors. I have no clue if they will fit your subframe though.

Well, I know DSE headers work with my setup. Their headers work with both size body mounts and you have to use different engine mounts which sets the engine back an inch and a half. Dan checking on another set of headers and I'll post pics of them when they are ready.

WSSix 02-19-2013 12:18 AM

Good luck finding something that works for you. This is the reason I'll most likely make my own.

Are you set on SS? Dynatech also has a header available but they aren't stainless http://www.dynatechheaders.com/m_camaro_67_69.html Again, no idea if they'll fit the DSE subframe.

Have you considered having a custom set made? This might be an option for you. I'm not sure on costs but the idea sounds pretty cool. http://www.icengineworks.com/

Customs headers would be cool. Going to try a new set from RS. Dan said they shoud do the trick.
