mini tub diff width
I have done a search and not found any info on narrowing a diff.. what id like to know is there a width that is used over and over with the dse mini tub? Im installing a ridetech g bar with the dse mini tubs..
Can i get some specs on what your diff measures and possibly what backspace you were able to run. is the diff measured flange to flange? (12 bolt moser) or from the end of the axle flange? thanx, Gav |
Depends on the brakes you will run but I like to run 56.5 that will put your 12" rim right at a 5.5 back space. Gives a nice looking dish.

sorry that would be wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.

Gav --- Call SpeedTech and ask. They've done a bunch of these and should have a pretty good idea of what will work.
Remember they're now in Utah! |
Thanx guys ,, undertaking this job myself,, my car has needed this done for years and i just couldnt afford it ,,(shipping all the parts to Oz costs $$$)
4 link rearend and rear discs as well.. all parts ordered and some are here now , car is stripped bare and im ready to start! Ill contact Jay and see what he recomends Gav |
Gav I think most guys run 54"-55" wide. I would cut out the tubs, mock of the wheels (IE how far out you want them to sit) and then measure.

Im confused on how to go about this,, what comes first the chicken or the egg? :lostmarbles: |
hello Gav like Ryan said if you dont your rearend yet get your wheels first with the look and depth you want then order rearend but remember to measure fro wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface and add for thickness of rotors, look at mine if you like that look I can give all of the measurements or can change to get the depth and look you like, let me know I will be glad to help.

Being new to the PT build I'm presume there are many ways to get the results each person is after. My understanding and the way I planned my build was to do the mini tub while I was replacing quarter panels, assemble an install my rear suspension set up, then measure and order the rim & tire combination to fill the big hole I just created. Is that not why I'm going to have to order a set of these super expensive PT type wheels I keep seeing on these builds? :headscratch:

I had a measure of my diff today ,, its a tru trac moser ,, it has big drums,, did they use ford rear brakes on some of these? Im sure i saw a ford logo stamped into the backing plate somewhere when i purchased it? will that be a factor with getting rear discs or are the axle flanges the same stud pattern? sorry i got a lot of questions here ,, i also thought narrowing each side 2.5 would bring the saddles very close to the axle flange.. my 69 camaro has 55 inch rear end wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface that's 5 inches shorter then stock wheels are 18x12 5.5 back spacing fits perfect in my car
|
Vince , i do already have a chev pattern tru trac Moser rear,, but im thinkin i have ford big brakes as it got the torino bearings ? I just thought the flange pattern maybe different to a stock chev flange pattern, ill have to measure it..THe spring pad mount on the diff would be very close if i narrowed it to 55 inches.. do they end up being that close to the disc and bracketry?

Tony,
So a 1969 Camaro stock hub to hub is 60"? I was told the Z28 is 58"? Are they different for different X codes? Just asking. Gav, As Vince suggested, brakes also may play a role. I'll probably go with the stock width rear and stock dish making replacement a cinch. I'm going with Moser full floater (steel hubs) and PBRs on Willwood GT rotors. GMR makes the mounts for the PBRs and a sweet little parking prake optiion. At 58" as a standard width it will be easier to get a replacement if needed. I'm sure Moser can and will make any width but they have specific widths already in stock. And from what I see they have good prices. Are you dead set on keeping the 12 bolt? Just a thought. David , yes the diff will be at 55 " ,,I have already got a moser rear custom built a few years back and will now have to have it narrowed to suit.. also the g bar rear needs the mounts welded to the diff. No big deal , just im impatient and i wanna drive the thing sooner than later..

Generally speaking you want to select the wheels with the offset you like first. Then mock them up under the car to determin the WMS to WMS width of the rear end. Here is a good post on exactly what the WMS measurement is and how to measure it. Just for the record, my rear wheels are 18x12 with a 5.9" back space. I mocked them up under the car where I wanted them and determined that I needed a 57" WMS to WMS rear end.

Needs to be said that not All rims come in . The backspace that you may want..and not All rims can be custom ordered..which is why you want your rims first.. Ever see a car with the rear tires "in too-far" cuz the builder narrowed the rear to much for the desired rims..
