Vulcan 1968 SOHC 427 Mustang
I started this as an Eleanor project a few years ago and stopped working on it and decided to sell and finish the project the way the customer wants.
This is how Vulcan will be built: Robert Pond SOHC 427 +++ cubic inch block Hilborn EFI TKO 600 5 speed Strange 9” rear with 31 spline axles Rod & Custom front suspension TCP subframe connectors with G-bar rear suspension Fab 9 narrowed housing Wilwood 14" brakes 18” wheels in the front 19” in the rear Body modifications: Fender flares Mini tubbed Eleanor side scoops Drip rails removed 1967 Shelby style hood and deck lid Cowl vents filled Custom front valance with spoiler Custom side exhaust Custom interior This is how Vulcan looks at the start of the project http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psae49b49d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps206664ca.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps48a4df57.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps81a2dd96.jpg |
Killer motor choice! (Even if its a Ford). :D
|
Sound killer!! Is that an original body or have the panels been replaced? It looks really good. Watching this one come to life.
|
It would be bitchin just to see it as a Mustang and not a hybrid Shelby/Elanor thing since it's been done to death, but the SOHC will put it over the top. Putting a Hilborn on one is like putting a crown on a king. it's just right.

Are you using the new head castings from Robert? What stroke on the crank? Going big like Jay 585ci? I know the Rod and Custom make room up front but what about an RS :D or DSE front clip to match the performance of that SOHC? |
I will start back in the beginning when we were building an Eleanor for the first customer.
This is what we started with back on 12/05 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Eleanor/03.jpg Rod & Custom front suspension that I would later use on my 1968 Coupe project http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Eleanor/33.jpg All the sheetmetal was removed and the skeleton was stripped to bare metal and epoxy primed and we took it to a car show 10/06. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Eleanor/73.jpg This had been a slow build because of lack of funds so the owner sold it back to me and it had been sitting until 1/09 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Eleanor/75.jpg |
Off topic, what can you tell me about that XR4ti/ Sierra with Cosworth wing on those pics.. Rollgage, lightweight seats =race car...?
Your work on Mustang, top as allways. Keep it up.. |
Seriously cool engine choice! Good luck with it this time around. I'm glad to see more Mustangs getting the PT/G-machine treatment.

So you got a Cossie body kit and Cossie cylinder head. 9" at rear?
Is it easy to get parts is US or do you order them from UK? That is a great engine, I know my way around that thing.. 550-600hp dailydriver allday everyday.. |

I was not happy with the way the end caps or taillight panel fit from the original Eleanor kit so I ordered new end caps and taillight panel from Mustangs to Fear. The fit was good except now the deck lid did not line up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/161.jpg We cut the end of the deck lid off and lowered it http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/164.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/166.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/175.jpg |
Can't wait to see how this one turns out, fantastic engine choice. + a mustang made to turn corners. Kudos!
|
We mini tubbed but did not narrow the frame rail.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/153.jpg Made the brake scoops functional http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/178.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/168.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...leanor/183.jpg |
Love it! Subscribed!

Now you are caught up how the car looks now after being in storage for a couple of years.
The first thing we did was order a lot of parts. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf046ea6a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps974facbf.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf86a9a27.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psec297070.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps20881bd0.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psaf5f6495.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf4d24808.jpg I have never seen a rear housing packaged like this Fab 9 before http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps44f63122.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps864a19f2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa1ba0ca5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps0ee8ea1a.jpg |
We had installed subframe connectors along time ago and since we were going with Total Control rear suspension we decided to cut them off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psea77b781.jpg Brian welded in the TCP subframe connectors http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd3ad9878.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps43dcaf9d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa13dd0c8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps947fec67.jpg Center brace bolted in place http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps06b03be5.jpg |
Nice! keeping an eye on this one!
|
Sprayed two coats of SPI black epoxy on the Fab 9 housing
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps2b34c5e9.jpg When we did the rust repair years ago the A pillar was not available. There were a few pits in the pillar so Brian decided to replace both of them. We did not feel right about giving it to the customer this way so we are fixing it at our expense. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps34924ba8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psb4dff04c.jpg The welds still need to be ground http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfad722a1.jpg |
Looks great Rusty. Nice of you guys to fix the A-pillars for the owner at your cost. Keep up the good work. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

We block sanded the body than sprayed two coats of SPI epoxy
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps5c571096.jpg Brian cleaned the Rod & Custom crossmember getting ready to weld motor mounts. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps471f790d.jpg Getting ready to test fit the FE block with the Canton pan and TKO 600 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps1a88d22f.jpg Making sure the block is in the center, level and has a 4 degree angle so Brian can weld the motor mounts. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa4583e1c.jpg |
The transmission mount had to be modified to get the correct angle.

I don't know how I missed this build?! |
Brian welded the motor mounts in place. Now when you order a kit from Rod & Custom the motor mounts are already welded.

The new owner did not like the Eleanor non functional quarter scoops so we cut them off and installed Shelby scoops.

This project was on hold for a few years and the owner has decided on a few changes. I'm sorry to say he has decided not to go with the SOHC but is going with an aluminum FE just not sure how big it will be yet. We will also be doing a few modifications to the body.
It is out of storage and back in the fab shop. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfvmv961j.jpg The first thing Brian did was finish lining up the sheetmetal http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps8frpr6hf.jpg Starting to install the Mustang to Fear gas filler kit. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psjytmq8ah.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psvnvprfmz.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps6zvywiyb.jpg Welded in place and the welds ground http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd9qx0nws.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psimnzcmvn.jpg |
Glad to see it's back on. I thought this would make for a cool ride no matter what engine choice. Good luck!
|
Both of those engines are different around these parts. :bigun2:
Glad it's back on the burner. |
The owner decided he didn't what the Shelby/Eleanor taillight panel that was installed before he bought the car. Brian had the fun job of cutting off the fiberglass taillight panel and end caps.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psnlwmsr2r.jpg We bought another taillight panel to cut out the stock taillights. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pskddorxzq.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps9bcm407y.jpg After a lot of measuring and Brian standing back looking at them to make sure they were straight he welded them in place. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfql91oon.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psn3crwydn.jpg Since we have a side gas filler we decided to do away with the original one. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pszmyryzbs.jpg Brian cut out a section of the new taillight panel and welded it in place. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pscni51fba.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps0aykpzev.jpg After a little grinding http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pshwwcimbv.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psjuf3btb6.jpg Stay tuned for more modifications to the rear in the future. |
Brian finished grinding the right side.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pslwsjjyv1.jpg Carriage bolts were welded to the taillight panel and ground down to hold the taillights http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psmhnkqgby.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psvl9adzfq.jpg He still has to finish the right side. He bolted it together and tack welded the carriage bolts removed the taillights and finished welding both sides. This is how they look before he grinds them down and weld them one more time before the final grinding. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psmfbkfgx4.jpg |
Rusty,
Nice work you and Brian are doing! What will be the process you use for finishing off the undercarriage? Will it be primed, painted, undercoated? Thanks, Joe |

Brian finished welding and grinding on the taillight panel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pslpgbuaqu.jpg |
Very clean! Love the way the taillights are just there without a bezel to clutter up the area.
|
The end caps were bolted and bonded to the quarter panel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps467kgn1k.jpg I also added a little fiberglass http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psrzp6n9ov.jpg Bodywork ruffed in http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psmceacmil.jpg We now have a nice tight gap around the rear bumper http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps2fxhtk0h.jpg Epoxy primed http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...pswis9ry4v.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psprfcqdlb.jpg Next step is to finish the bodywork on the taillight panel and rear valance http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psbyo8qwq8.jpg |
I love when they bring the rear bumper in tight like that, it looks so clean. Nice work.
