69 fastback mustang weight Q:
 
Hello,

Just curious about what weight the 69 fastback can be brought down to. I know the cobras are 2500lbs or so, I've heard XV motorsports in full trim bring their 71 cuda to 2800lbs, can the mustang come around the 24-2600lbs mark without looking like a race car with plastic windows, no interior etc.

My '65 Fastback track car weighs 3015 pounds -- it's as gutted as a car can get -- and has Lexan front and rear windows and no side glass what-so-ever... no carpet - no interior - not even door panels (except aluminum covers)

If you don't mind, can you refresh my memory as to what engine is in it? Even iron block 302s are pretty light engines (comparatively). I'm kind of surprised it weighs in at 3000ish and not closer to 2800lbs. I'm only surprised because now I'm worried my little Mustang with a full interior will weigh almost as much as half of Rob's Torino.

Only for YOU --- would I leave my couch.... put on some shoes - go down to the shed -- find the packet for the Ford -- rummage thru all the paperwork - get the weight sheet - come back to the house - find an SD Card - scan the sheet - load the SD card into the laptop - convert the file - save it to the desktop - import it to iPhoto - export it to Photobucket..... post it on Lat G -- go back down to the shed - put away the paperwork... :hello:



Muttstang has a Ford R code block.... 355.6" cubic inches of Iron ---- with aluminum heads....

I didn't do any of the set up - it's just the paperwork that came with the car.

Matt you know your Mustang will never be half the Sportsroof my Torino is. That's why you can't stop thinking about her.:mock: :action-smiley-027:

Maybe lighter seats would help you. I have some Kirkeys I could offer on trade.

GW doesn't that car still have a steering box and center link. The box alone ads some heft on the drivers side.

I'd bet you all you have vs. what I have that it's with driver and you should get your car back on the scales to get the cross weight right. :D

Here's my old car on the scales with dead nuts cross weight and me in the car. Notice the left side vs. right side weight. Very similar to your car. You just need some work on the cross weight. From my fuzzy memory, your RF spring needs a few turns UP. :relax:

I still don't get it. A big dodge charger weighs 3400-3600lbs depending on options. Why on earth would a car half the size weigh almost the same. Alloy engine block and heads, coil over suspension, Carbon fiber interior, alloy wheels, billet breaks, alloy cased gearbox... Gotta weigh under 3000.

We weighed our 65 slow back, full interior with a new 5.0 roller motor/T-5/Ice Cream Truck rear and it came in at 2888. I dunno what you did to make a race car so portly. Cage?

My 69 with an iron block/aluminum head 351W based 460, magnesium Rankin trans, carbon clutch, rollcage and no back seat weighs 3100.

my 65 falcon weighs 2700lbs, fiberglass front end, no rear seat. And some aluminum stuff.

The 65 drag car weighs 2600lbs, all steel, full interior. Everything bolted onto the car has had weight reduction in mind. But the wheels and tires alone are 75 lighter than the one on my falcon.

Greg's POS might have been weighed before bumpers, glass etc were removed. I sent Jack a link so he can chime in. He built it and had it weighed. It has R-P steering.

I emailed McGee Motorsports and asked that they weigh it and give me corner weights.


The little POS handles way better than I can drive so no reason to change a thing -- but these questions always make me "want to know"...

Not sure how it would get any lighter.... there's nothing there but body - drivetrain - cage... Lexan "glass". No bumpers... no door guts... no carpet... Well - you get the picture.

Suggested mods
 
A better brake package and some aero mods would help a lot. If I did the car today, I would go the complete DSE front and rear suspension and get more tire under the car.

By the way - the QUESTION was about WEIGHT.... I have a weight sheet showing 3015 pounds.... The originator of this thread was asking what we all thought he could get his '69 Mustang Fastback down to. I said my "track car" weighs 3015 according to the sheet that was in with all the other paperwork (minus the title).... HA!

I would like to post some pics, but don't know how. The color is paladium silver, which is a current Mercedes color. Greg, the suggested mods on your Mustang would make the car handle better and be much easier to drive; you have plently of power for the weight of the car. Next event try driving my 0Mustang.....I know you said you did not like the car, but after you drive is you may think differently.

Oh I LOVE your new Mustang.... I just don't want one for the track -- only because I love the VINTAGE stuff. But your Mustang is awesome!


I actually think the '65 is one car I've owned that I wouldn't do a thing to.... I like it just the way it is. But you never know! I've been known to hack 'em up even if they're perfect! :lol:


By the way -- the Palladium Silver was the only other choice (than black) when I was getting the S63..... Love that color. Just didn't think I wanted to live with the grey here in Seattle. :thumbsup:

My Mustang in full frame,cage, and gutted interior is over 3300 lbs., the chassis is HEAVY DUTY. My new AMX project I'm trying to keep below 3000 lbs, we'll see how that goes. LOL
