JCG Restoration & Customs 70 Challenger 2nd Test Car!

We just started this project Monday.. The car has been lingering here @ the shop for a few months putting a plan together for it.. Last Saturday I drove it 2 the SoCal Challenge & now is in pcs ready for upgrades…

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3264ea45.jpg

Car was an original 440 6 Pack, 4 speed, Dana 60 Car…

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6ecee15c.jpg

Carter Hickman has a concept for us…

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...ps345856b3.jpg

The first step was putting it on a jig & cutting out the existing frame rails… We measured the JCG 67-69 Camaro Sub-Frame with ride height & it was a close enough match… The grafting of the sub-frame is going pretty smooth..

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...psa1a466c4.jpg

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6df1fbf9.jpg

Engine choice! LS Mast Motorsports 416 with RPM Road Race transmission.. C&R 9” Ford third member… I know a lot of guys are not gonna like what we are doing their.. But you can't beat the HP & packaging from a LS engine.. It is gonna be pretty damm cool showing up to LS Fest in this car…

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1d2fe089.jpg

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...psdddc4afb.jpg

http://i1015.photobucket.com/albums/...psb5b1427c.jpg

Using a GMR 9” Ford Housing with JCG 3 Link rear suspension.. Tomorrow we design the shock mounts with top link mounting point…

More Progress Pics Next Friday!

Wow Cris, you guys are fast, wasn't the SoCal challenge held only a week ago?!? Amazing how much is already done to it.

I love the rendering! Can't wait to hear all the Mopar guys whine about the hot little Mast motor you have in this machine. What oil pan are you running on this motor, it looks like a sheetmetal pan?

67XR7 05-05-2013 03:55 PM

Am I the only one who cringes just a little, about taking a 440-6pack car and putting a chevy in it?

Nope. I do too but I understand the reasoning and respect the owner's wishes. Not saying you're not but I'm certain a lot of people are going to have the same reaction. This car is going to be cool as hell though. Love the rendering.

Cris@JCG 05-05-2013 05:54 PM

Josh- We are on a fast pace to get this car on the road.. I have a completion date in my head that I would like for this car to be completed.. The car will be a down & dirty re-do.. Nothing fancy.. just upgrades to do some testing of JCG components..

Oil pan is ATS pan that we used for mock up..

I knew the drivetrain choice for this car was not going to be popular.. but I had a pile of parts sitting in corner of the shop that I pulled out of 2007 Mustang that needed a new home.. Primary goal for this car is to test & race the crap out of it.. & have some fun..

If time permits & can find somebody to let me borrow a late model Hemi Engine.. I will fit it between the frame rails to see how it fits..

Ooops, there you have....any takes that will give Cris a Mopar engine? Don't hold your breath Cris. Do what you do. It may just be me, but I wouldn't care if you put a Honda 4-cylinder in it. Of course I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get my point. Just as long as it would be a bad a$$ car.

Cris@JCG 05-06-2013 11:57 AM

Arrington R5 P7 Engine !

if anybody has an engine like this that they want to throw away... This would be my engine of choice.. but streetable!!

Last nite was watching a YouTube video of one of these engines screaming all the way up to 8500 RPM..

GrabberGT 05-06-2013 12:15 PM

You know, if you ever get a Road Runner in there, it would be wrong NOT to put a Coyote in it.

Cris@JCG 05-06-2013 12:19 PM

putting together a estimate for a 70 GTX right now...

Just imagine what engine I will put in that one!!

That's your best post in two months Cris. Welcome back :D

I'll start looking. I'm sure there's one in NASCAR country...

R5 P7

Motors are easy to come up with, especially now that Penske has switched. Looked at these when I was going to do a Cuda. I was going to give $8500 for one that was complete but needed a rebuild. To make them run well on the street you need to knock the compression out, change cams and add more stroke. They have reduced one to $5300 that needs a rebuild below

Here are 3 http://www.racingjunk.com/NASCAR-ARC...7-Engines.html

Most are around 3.230-3.30 on stroke and the redline is more like 9800 unless it is a restrictor motor.

Very nice. That is a killer rendering. Should be an awesome build Cris!

DTM Racing 05-06-2013 06:49 PM

I'm really looking forward to the final product. Cris and I spoke about it before, so no issue in saying it here; the biggest thing with cutting this car up is that it is a REAL 440/6, A833,Dana 60 Car. These types of things don't mean much to Chevy and Ford folks as it does to Mopar folks, and its not about "mopar or no car." The reason for this is simple to people who appreciate restoring "correct" classics. Mopars (unlike chevys and fords) were actually tracked, vin'd and registered by EXACT build specs. Mopar was lucky enough to have someone high up in management to save our registries since the beginning of the company to reference from. We can figure out the exact build options our cars came with and this is obviously very big in restoration world. To do something like this would be similar to just shoving it off a cliff for the sake of doing it. Were time not a factor, they could have sold this car for a considerable amount of money, bought a /6 3speed car with a 7 1/4 rear end, and no one would have cared about them sticking any suspension or motor combo in for the sake of speed.

Sinco 05-06-2013 09:26 PM

Nice build!

Well not to side track Cris's thread all I have to say is you couldn't be more wrong in your statement. I'm a GM guy who looks at this the same way as you. Blame your Mopar folks for even letting this happen. What are ''they'' thinking. :lostmarbles: I to believe this should never happen I don't care what brand of car it is! It sucks but that's just the way it is. A lot of people don't look at it the way you or I do. To them its just a car.:topic:

66fury 05-07-2013 08:48 AM

I'm not bothered so much by cutting up a rare mopar as I am by putting an ls motor in it! :peepwall:

Cris@JCG 05-07-2013 10:22 PM

Thanks Ron but I talked to Mikey @ QMP today about building a 572 Twin turbo today HEMI!...

Oh .. sorry not for this build.. this one still getting a LS in it! but the Nascar motor to me would have been great for this one.. Maybe later.. Project Enhanchment..

Chassis is in final position & welded in the car.. Tomorrow we start the inner fender wells to clear the 315-30-18's.. Then we start the front fender flares..

67turbostang 05-07-2013 11:18 PM

Looking good!! Your shops work is always exciting to watch!

DTM Racing 05-08-2013 07:34 AM

I can't wait to see what you do to clear those meats up front! You guys aren't wasting ANY time. Whats the estimated completion date?

Cris@JCG 05-08-2013 08:24 AM

The front suspension is compressed about 1 inch more than what ride height will be ... We want to make sure that we have plenty of room on the inside tires for turning radius..

Here is what flares will be looking like... but with less on the rear..

Estimate late July.. early August to get it on the road...

Got some more progress... Inner wells are done, Wilwood pedals on firewall done, Got most of one of the front flare done, sub-frame connectors almost done, rear qtrs. are cut to begin flares, rear axle is getting floater ends welded this week, & the list keeps going... I think we should be done with the hard fab work in two weeks...

This thread gets better and better. That car is going to be an awesome machine when done.
I've been on an old school Mopar kick lately.

xtreme 05-22-2013 04:10 PM

Chris the r5/p7 motor is the same motor I have for my cuda, check out my build thread. If you are interested in one of these motors complete, disassembled, used, new, or every part to build one, let me know, as I know just the people to set you up with. Mine will eventually be twin turbo.

xtreme 05-22-2013 04:49 PM

Thanks flash68. I think this would have been better then the LS, but "to each their own" Its going to be an awesome car either way.

Those are some wide flairs!

Cris@JCG 05-22-2013 06:15 PM

Very cool build you got their Grant! I will keep it in mind if we ever go with a R5/P7..
