GoPro may have legit competition

The new Drift Innovation HD Ghost appears to address some of the shortfalls with GoPro and Contour engineering.

The specs that caught my attention were:
- Rotating lens, 300* range
- 170* 127* 90* field of view in 1080p
- Remote mic accessory
- 2" LCD screen
- Remote control

That thing looks nice, I was considering the GoPro. I think I may wait a bit and see how this piece works out. Accessories are reasonably priced too.

I have 5 GoPro's (every model from day one) all have audio shortfalls. They just release a firmware upgrade for the new Hero3 that appears to have resolved it's issues. My Hero2 has mechanical noise issues, appears the 3 was electronic.

This camera has potential IMO. Alan of Stilwell Performance (off-road motorcycle team) just received cameras from them to test, I'm looking forward to his reports.

GoPro's are exceptional at capturing image/video but audio is very important to motorsports (combustion powered) enthusiasts that don't want to listen to hard-rock audio tracks over-layed in the video. I wish I knew the reasons/challenges as to why GoPro hasn't put more energy into a remote mic accessory option.

I'll be paying close attention to this one...looks cool, thanks for posting.

GoPro is just killing it with their marketing.

Here's a video comparing GoPro3 Black, DriftHD Ghost, Contour+2, and Sony Action Cam.

(Sony wins IMO)

Sony definitely has the audio advantage.

Ghost audio was baaad.

To get "decent" audio all these cameras need a remote mic option to allow shielding from the wind. A water resistant not waterproof case and plugin for most applications equals user convenience and improved audio results.

its nice to see sony back in the game...

I just got a Hero3 Black. Though the remote is nice it is not always reliable. Several times on OLoA it simply would not work. Link them up, everything seems to be working fine, then poof..... Nope. Have to remove the battery to get them to re-sync.

The video also stops, then restarts a new file, after about 3.8G's of memory is used in 1080 mode. It did this on one of my BMW and VIR runs.

The audio is horrible. Whoever designed it needs to be kicked in the nads. It's that bad.

Carl,

This firmware is less than two weeks old, appears to have fixed my audio issues.

Hi Scott,

We would like to ask you to update your Black Edition the the latest firmware we released last week. This latest firmware fixes audio issues and we think it will solve the one in your camera:

This is the only video I've had a chance to shoot though......

The audio track is the camera recording the car stereo.

What about the Replay XD 1080?

Another one that "has" potential but what little I've seen indicates the audio is mediocre and it video capabilities are weaker than the other "players" in the market.
